Greater Media, parent company of 97.5 the Fanatic, has issued an apology on behalf of sports-talk host Tom Byrne.

We reported Tuesday that Byrne was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly assaulting a cab driver whom he had first refused to pay a $5 fare, according to a police report.

"Tom deeply regrets his behavior on Sunday night and realizes that it was inexcusable," Greater Media spokeswoman Heidi Raphael wrote in an email last night. "He also extends his sincere apology to the cab driver and would like to make amends if possible," she said. "Tom will be taking a leave of absence from the station while he works through these issues, and we support him in those efforts.”

As we reported Tuesday Byrne was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and related charges after he was arrested at 7th and Pine streets, one block west from where a taxi driver told police that Byrne had punched him repeatedly and dragged him on the ground after he refused to pay for his cab ride and taunted the driver by saying "I'm a celebrity. This is my neighborhood. What are you gonna do about it?"

Byrne has a preliminary hearing Feb. 3.

If you're going to use that "don't you know who I am" schtick, save it for something important...Like when your $1,250 dinner bill arrives. Then drop that line on someone.

"I'm a celebrity" on a $5 fare? LMAO. I bet I know exactly where he grew up in Bucks County.

Apologies on behalf of someone are lame and insincere. Let's see this jerk apologize to the cabby in person. Also ban him from using cabs.
