Iverson loses his ATL manse
Iverson out of house and home
Molly Eichel
Allen Iverson is having a no good, very bad week.
The former Sixers No. 3 lost his Atlanta mansion at a foreclosure auction, according to TMZ. Foreclosure proceedings began in December after Iverson defaulted on his $1.2 million mortage. TMZ reported Iverson was able to stave off foreclosure in December by filing a lawsuit claiming he never consented to the terms of the loan set up by his now-estranged wife Tawanna. Iverson bought the house, worth $4.5 milllion in December 2010. Sources told the gossip website that Iverson's bank bought the mansion for $2.5 mil.
This news comes after the ATL judge presiding over Iverson's divorce slammed the erstwhile basketball great over his parenting skills.
DID TAWANNA TELL U DAT?
KING~out thee~KING
this shocking news to us all. let's move on. Tyrone Biggums
@advantasux --yes, I agree wholeheartedly -- Iverson obviously has personal issues but what does that have to do with Philly fans "piling on" and ripping him..any Sixer fan who watched him score 50 points in games against Milwaukee to single-handedly take Sixers to 2001 finals should feel nothing towards him but gratitude and hope he can get his life together..frankly, I have similar sentiments for the even worse messed-up Len Dykstra (yes he "drugged up" and is a felon and probably a jerk; he also had - in 1993 -- one of the greatest seasons and post-seasons in Phillies history, so why should Philly fans rejoice in his downfall)...indeed although I run a broken record about Ruben Amaro, I don't wish personal harm to befall him or others whom I criticize; I just wish they would get out of the way so that many of us who are Philadelphia fans can enjoy the comforting distraction of vicarious success through the teams we root for...fans have every right to expect competence and effort from public sports figures; that doesn't entitle them to be judge and jury over others' personal lives warbiscuit- @war, not sure how many of our "fans" will be coming over to this already day-old article but, trust me, if they do come along and see what you've written here, and what @copper wrote earlier, with me in support throughout, they'd laugh themselves silly, seeing that the main phalanx of attack against their hero Amaro, ESPECIALLY YOU, are campaigning for restraint and some sense of decency. They'll be quick to attack us as the hypocrites they are desperate to believe we are, not quite understanding the not-so-subtle (at least to any with a good amount of intelligence) difference you pointed out here, that calling for a man's dismissal for doing his job so poorly doesn't rise even a hundredth of the way up the scale to the level of hate and vile sentiment evident in 95 of the 101 posts made here to date about a former Philly sports-hero.
Indeed, with Mr. Iverson being a black man, a ghetto-raised black man at that, if the shoe were on the other foot and it was you (with us alongside) writing this hate against him, the verdict of Supreme Racist would be handed down on you swiftly and without any recourse.
Funny how that works, isn't it? The rules change as often as the idiots want them to, with personal integrity meaning nothing.
As I wrote earlier, having no knowledge ahead of time who else felt the way I did about this man and his life-long problems, I was more than gratified to see my thoughts lined up with yours, and those of @copper and @grannyhamner. If we can coax an opinion out of @ghost here, too, before this thread is shut down, I'm betting it is with us.
My friend, I wouldn't have it any other way.
advantasux
@bubba, AMEN to all that you wrote up above. I find it stunning to see the vitriol raining down on these pages on this one-time warrior whom had a tough life as a kid and, unfortunately, didn't use his basketball court success to learn life's lessons and forge a new life for himself and his family.
I find it equally stunning when I compare the ridicule I'm reading here with the pitched line of defense afforded Ruben Amaro just because a few of us point out his many failed decisions and his destruction of our once-proud baseball team.
Where's all the compassion now for another guy, an actual one-time sports hero in this city? The words we use against Amaro are nothing compared to what I'm reading here against Allen Iverson, yet other than you, me, @war and very few others, there is no defense of this man to speak of.
What a twisted bunch of people these folks are. advantasux
QDOGPA- I totally agree with you but we have to face the fact that Iverson was a GREAT basketball player but a FOOL with his money by trying to be a MAJOR PLAYA. He should have tried to learn a little something about finance and stayed out of them streets and left that POSSE OF BUMS alone if they didn't want to WORK instead of leeching off him. phillygtown
@advantasux and @cooper (and Grannyhammer)--ditto, I agree with your well-articulated sentiments ... and find it interesting too that those with whom I agree with in criticisms (Amaro), I also agree with regarding gratitude and sympathy (Iverson)..i think it just means that some of us who are intelligent and fair-minded often come to the same conclusions... warbiscuit- @war, I arrived late to this column and my post went up after most of the fuss had been raised already. I was actually wondering if either you or @copper, or @ghost of callison, people I usually count on for solid perspective and honesty, were still going to come over here to write something.
I know you saw the point I made in support of @copper and I'll repeat it here...because we dare to opine that the Phils' GM is doing a god-awful job, we are ridiculed incessantly. So completely unimportant in the grand scheme of things, right? I mean, it's just a game and we are doing little more than campaigning for one man's dismissal.
Yet, here is Allen Iverson, a former Philadelphia hero, a warrior who left his all on the court a thousand times for this city, being castigated like he's a rabid dog. I'm wondering - where is all the compassion now? Where are the bleeding hearts who lie in wait for you to poke your head out of your bunker each and every day, always ready to pounce?
I had no idea prior to this evening how other solid folks like you and @copper and @grannyhamner felt about this issue, but I know now and I'm gratified to see we stood alone here as well.
Be well, my friend!
advantasux
A total loser from the get go!
Great at hoops but sucks at the rest of life.
I always wondered how many people John Thompson had to intimidate to keep this knucklehead eligible at Georgetown. eyesell
it's too late for AI....he's got no other skills than playing ball...there's nothing to turn around...his future is not bright...it won't end well dude
The guy should write a book on what he did wrong and hopefully save someone from making the same mistakes. He could even make the rounds giving talks to current college kids. jasjfarrell
Poor little rich boy! No sympathy. dogman5
Such a stand up guy too ! Poor guy ..... I guess now he's eligible for an Obama phone just awful
Just a basketball thug who had some money like a lot of NBAers. He has no idea what a real job is like so now he'll find out. bossrjc
who would have thought, I can't believe this happened just awful
Still can't figure out why every team or player he played with or on, got worse, when he was with them and better when he left. cuch
Phillygtown, why Not sell the home for more then the mortgage is? He could have netted some cash, the way he did it,he lost everythng...Most foreclosures happen due to no equity vis a vie outstanding loan Qdogpa
QDOGPA- If you stop making payments and foreclose you LOSE any equity when the bank takes over. phillygtown
Why is this news? Didn't we have Iverson articles this week already? Is he in Philly again? Is he in the NBA again? WHY IS THIS NEWS??? Panthro2011
A fool and his money are soon parted!!! phillygtown
If he owed 1.2 million on a 4.5 million dollar house and the bank bought it for 2.5 million, he should have had some equity in the house...something is wrong with the reporting... Qdogpa
Before you guys start judging, use your brain. How many of you would pay for a house that your soon to be ex financed off of your income. Ok then, stop beleiving the media when they post people personal information. The only way you would somewhat know what type of money a person have is if you are they accountant. Stop hating richardallen00
whoa, whoa, whoaaa!!! dude was born to a 15 y.o. single mom. growing up, he hung around with not exactly the best element of humanity. got stitched up at 17 by the delightful virginia justice system for a street fight thing that was so off (15 YEARS for hitting a woman - a WHITE woman - with a chair, when everybody there said he didn't), it took the governor to get him off after a few months. nice start to life, yeah? i'm not waving the do-gooder flag here, just hoping to provide some of you pampered posters a bit of insight. what about this: the sixers had to know his background when he came here as a 21 y.o. punk with amazing talent. why not hire some former bball player with smarts and guts to be his mentor/minder, a dude he could look up to who'd stick to him like super-glue and give the kid some cultural instruction on what it really is to be a man? radical, huh. doesn't the team, the league, the players union, have some responsibility here? he's done some unbelievably thuggy stuff, absolutely. just remember how much we loved him when he was ankle-breaking here like no one before or since. bubba church & granny hamner- @bubba, AMEN to all that you wrote. I find it stunning to see the vitriol raining down on these pages on this one-time warrior whom had a tough life as a kid and, unfortunately, didn't use his basketball court success to learn life's lessons and forge a new life for himself and his family.

What a twisted bunch of people these folks are. advantasux - ...if this guy has a trust fund that pays him $1M a year, then why was he begging the Sixers for a job last week?...
Rock on, punk! Joe Pyne
it be me Tommy the G ..... drinking a fifth of crown a day , driving around with guns with the posse and smoking the joints and gambling and chasing the women ...cmon man its just practice right ...its just practice ....wait until the game starts .... TommyBelly
AI, AI! what are you going to do now? gj2001
Hate to hear this, AI is a Philly icon and gave true Sixer fans a ton of great memories. Hope things work out for him. ericg610
holla dontavoidtheobvious
and then there are the ex-'athletes' (barely) like Clueless Rube who is not content to ruin himself with the "common sense of a 9 year old and a huge checkbook" and instead destroys a franchise... warbiscuit
Iveraon gets 1mill a year allowance until he.s 50 ..has a trust fund he cant touch until he.s 50yrs old ...this was done to protect him from going broke....after 50 he can do whatever he well pleases with $$$$$ thats been collectin interest for 25 years...JUS ALITTLE KNOWLEDE FOR U HATERS OUT THERE HOPING HE.S BROKE..DO SUM RESEAECH BEFORE U DEVILS SPILL ur VENOM.....HE.S STILL BETTER OFF THAN 98percent OF U CLOWNS ON THIS SITE...NoW SCRAM HATERS... pokerplayer- Now A.I. can join the 7,287 ex-professional athletes who each earned gigantic salaries....and lost it all because they had the mind and common sense of a 9 year old and a huge checkbook. Paying for a posse, expensive clubbing, Lamborghini's ..baby mamma's and babys, gambling, and spending in general like a drunken sailor is more expensive than these arrogant clowns realize. There's a great YouTube about the sad end of once rich athletes....some of whom are now reduced to dumpster diving, or sitting in some hotel, signing autographs. Brains and athletic ability don't seem to be distributed to the same person in many cases. Hats off to the few who had the maturity to realize that the train ride eventually ends.
Jus because a person lets a house go into forclosure.doesnt mean they.re broke...its called making a financial decision...kkeep paying on a underwater or unwanted mortgage or let the bank eat the losss...this mortgage game is one of the biggest scams goin today....F the banks....if more people said F this mortgage game...we would see sum change in this world ..until then u r all slaves to the Banks...get a grip and a clue... pokerplayer- Big fan of Rent A Center?

For who? For what? How about a reality TV show of the lives of down and out professional aphletes? There are only couple of them who have blown through millions, lost it to the point of bankruptcy and have lived to tell about it. boroughboy
where do posses go when the well runs dry?

I see angry white people-lol! Super size me, dopes. Jabey- I don't get it.
DixonBunz - Lives his life like he pursued his basketball career: immature, selfish and a lack of self-control. That combination = failure as a person, father and husband, and no championship. Bob1
You should neither have pity nor gloat over AI's finances. The man has a $30 million trust fund that gives him $1 million a year until he is in his 50s. Then he gets the lump sum. So he still has more money than any of us can imagine. towman
He needs to buy bigger diamond ear studs! That will solve all of his problems. rcbrooks1
What is the over under on how much longer he lives before the inevitable drug overdose or domestic shooting? I say 2 years. Poppys
It'll be interesting to see how long the posse hangs around now that they no longer can sponge off Bubba Chuck. drbob1

Once a knucklehead, always a knucklehead. Borkey
he was arrogant Ahole who got what he deserved, bigtom blew3- Never understood the low-lifes that come out to "comment" on a guy who is down on his luck. My understanding is that Iverson has some cash (millions) in a trust fund that he has not been allowed to touch. Hate on, bigtom ...
Copper34 - Did you say "down on his luck" ? Really ? Someone who gets T-Boned by a semi and clings to life is down on his luck. Ignorance, arrogance, conceit and myopic narcissism are conscious decisions. Luck ? Dream on!
franky - @Copper, great post, great humanity expressed by you for a guy who once gave us his all and who now hears only catcalls.
Funny how you and I and a few others are castigated mercilessly for our tough stance on something as unimportant as the job the Phils' GM is doing, but when a man, any man, like Iverson is being ripped incessantly as he is in these pages, very few object. advantasux
I never saw this coming. Souperdad
dax- You said it. I saw this all coming (and more) when I heard he was banned from all Detroit-area casinos. Who gets to that point? I mean, aside from Antoine Walker, Michael Jordan (to an extent), and a ton of other guys I don't feel like google-ing. It's sad when people can't find their off switch, whether it be with drugs, alcohol, gambling, hookers, etc. Money often awakens and stenghtens one's demons, and AI folded under the weight of his demons years ago. I wish him afull mental and financial recovery but something tells me he hasn't even hit his bottom yet. Best of luck Iverson, you gave me so many good memories at Georgetown and in Philly. Now you need to break away from your circle of "friends" and get your priorities in line. jevans
$154 Million in career Salary. $50 M endorsement from Reebok. $204 M in earnings. He could have lived like a King just on the interest of his earnings. argonne
He'll come back to earth like an asteroid from space, be under the ground before most of us. Unfortunately guys like Iverson just can't handle success and money. my3cents- What???Is this English?? You must be a proud graduate of the Phila. School District.
The guy had a heckuva run. It's time for him to forget about the ridiculous lifestyle he was leading and come back to earth. Heck, I'm sure he can still make good money signing autographs and making appearances. dblankj- I hope that happens and he can live a decent life. It all starts with him. He can fix this, be a good father and maybe even a role model to other talented youngsters on the wrong path. Kicking when he is down seems the in thing to do here on philly.com. That's a shame.
Copper34 - Iversons a bad guy. I loved him as a player but hes just a bad person. Multple stories including leaving his kids home alone with strangers, beating his wife in front of his kids, adultery. The list is endless. At some point in our lives we are all tested. This is his time. Time to man up.
