UPDATED: Did Sarah Madson diss Phillies fans?

Sarah Madson, wife of Phillies reliever Ryan Madson, has been quoted bashing Phillies fans during a recent interview with a blogger at a charity event.

Laura Goldman, who has written recently for Metro, quoted Sarah Madson on her blog Naked Philadelphian, saying "I hate the fans. It is bad enough that they bother us during the season, but they will not leave us alone in December when we go out to eat. We stayed here during the off season last year, but we will be going to California this year. There must be something particularly bad about Phillies fans because all the players leave in the off season.”

According to Goldman's blog, Sarah Madson, five months pregnant with the couple's fourth child, also complained about female fans of her husband. at the March 31 event for MANNA at the Loews Hotel. “Can you believe that they have the gall to give my husband their number in front of me?”

After Deadspin posted about the statements, the Crossing Broad blog uncovered some information about Goldman, such as the former stockbroker being on probation for stalking a financier over a 1996 situation with Boston businessman Thomas Lee. She was extradited from Israel in 2009 as a fugitive from justice.

(The couple are pictured here in a photo by HughE Dillon/PhillyChitChat.com)

"Ryan and Sarah enjoy playing in Philadelphia and have a great fondness for the city and the fans. They both look forward to a successful 2011 season," a spokesman for the Madsons told us Wednesday morning.

Goldman tells us she stands by her quotes of Madson, which were in a one-on-one interview she conducted during the MANNA fundraiser.

This story has been updated.

UPDATE: The Phillies have released a statement on the Madson matter:

"Sarah did not consent to an interview, but rather was approached by Ms. Goldman, who did not identify herself as a reporter. She began to ask many personal questions about the life of a wife of a professional baseball player. The comments reported by Ms. Goldman were taken completely out of context, and as a result, Sarah is extremely upset and feels violated by the situation. Sarah says, "For every one fan that may upset us, there are 99 Phillies fans that we love. We have lived here for years, have many friends, neighbors and acquaintances -- who also happen to be Phillies fans -- for whom we have the utmost respect. The Madsons would like to dispel this misleading information which indicates that they have anything but admiration for the fans in Philadelphia."

And Goldman has now responded to the Phillies statement:

"The Phillies on behalf of Ryan and Sarah Madson have issued a response to my blog post. They did not refute that Sarah Madson said the comments that I reported.

They falsely allege that I did not identify myself as a reporter. That is just not true. I identified myself as a reporter several times and even Ryan and Sarah Madson for a joint interview after my conversation with Sarah.

As far as the false allegation that I took things out of context, Sarah was pretty clear on her hate for the fans. It was not possible to misconstrue.

I hope that this clears up any questions about my credibility," she posted.

Who cares what Mrs. Madson thinks of us? As long as she keeps her hubby happy so he pitches well they go to Afghanistan in the off-season as far as I am concerned.

Although it is funny that she hates the fan attention, but probably doesn't mind the millions of dollars her husband is earning as a professional athlete. That's the price you pay. Maybe she should've married an accountant.

Maybe she should keep a low profile so she doesn't mess up his already fragile head. Then she will really have to deal with the fans. Last time I checked, she wasn't putting herself out on the mound. Or she is just making it up because she is jealous all the ladies are actually after R2C2, Howard, J-Roll and Chase.

According to the article link, Goldman was 37 in 1996? That means she is 52 and pregnant? Something doesn't seem correct with the facts presented. If you check this link: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/11/
The picture of Goldman is a completely different person than Laura Goldman Madson. This is a careless attempt to make a story out of nothing at the expense of the Madson family.

Fans in general has become more obnoxious; it is hardly a Phillies thing, it is a national fascination with the famous. The 32k payment by Rutgers to Snookie is but one example of this phenomena. It has always been with us, but it seems to be getting worse with the 24 hour media, twitter, you tube, and of course, the fact that Phillies' games have become more of a huge social scene rather than a mere ball game (and from watching the game last night in DC, this obnoxious scene travels as well).

I hope Madson stays a Phillie and becomes our closer. As for his wife's comments, yes some fans can be obnoxious but ask your husband how he feels about them when they're packing the Bank and cheering his work in the 8th. If you want to keep a low profile, then don't do interviews with bloggers or the media. If you do want to discuss it, then do so in a polite professional manner instead of bashing philly sports fans, it's usually not in your best interest and will only make the situation worse now when you're seen out in public probably.

The sad part is, while she is absolutely right about many fans being obnoxious, attention-seekers; her comment has just made everything worse. Sometimes Mrs. Madson, it's better to keep your mouth shut, especially when talking about the people that you must live in the vicinity of for 7 months out of the year. You've just made your life here much much worse.

If these comments by Mrs Madson were said "off the record" in confidentiality then Mrs Goldman is an evil witch and Mrs Madson is a b!^@*.

If Mrs Madson was on the record with these comments giving an interview.Maybe a little tipsy? Oy Vey! Whew that wasnt too smart.

If Mrs. Goldman who has a very checkered background fabricated these comments she needs to be ran out of Philly like she has been NYC.

As per usual philadelphia athletes and local news personalities are the stars.Which is pretty pathetic in its own right.

Based on her own history, this blogger has the credibility of a snake oil salesman. Does anyone really think, given how Philadelphia fans respond to being insulted, that she would really make comments like that and let them go public? evenmix. Clearly, I would not have "let" anyone, including Ray Finkle, throw me out a window. He was a kicker, for Pete's sake. Rather, I was having a lovely evening with Lois Einhorn, things got a little frisky, and then they got a little weird. An awkward and tense conversation ensued but we got back into it while admiring the skyline from the balcony. Then, I noticed something odd. The next thing I knew, I was falling down down down. Thank you for your kind words but, from that elevation, a man of my....size...would have ripped right through that canvas awning.

Well, I am a Phillies' Phan and I, for one, hate myself too. Seriously though, I was at the game yesterday and there were a few Phans in the sparse crowd whose "passion" made them loud and overly obnoxious. Combined that with that annoying whistler and the guy who puked on the officer's daughter, and you come away scratching your head. At least most of the fans are good about it--I guess Mrs. Madson has the misfortune of being married to a focal point for that passion. I get what she says, and it shouldn't be a big deal. Them's the breaks.

Seriously, Who is Sarah Madson? I am glad she is not spending her off season in Philly. Who are you Lady? I can see why you can be insecure. Get a grip.

There are a few knuckleheads in every crowd. I am sure the reporter baited her into telling some stories about incidents that probably happen to every single professional athlete. Doesn't mean they hate the city or the people. Move along, nothing to see here.

Hey danno if you are going to put a rumor out there and open up to these idiots at least have the decency to clean up the mess. If I were the Madsons I would sue Philly.com and you for some of the vile comments here.

Get a life you losers who feel the need criticize others because it makes your pathetic lives seem less painful. Ive said a lot of things in my life I wish I could take back and did not necessary mean.

Dear Mrs Madson...Women give their # to professional athletes because they are known to be unfaithful. You'll just have to deal with it. Your husband can't pitch to save his life, when he takes the mound the whole crowd holds its breath because chances are he will blow a lead. Be grateful he has a JOB....the day will come when people will say Madson?? Madson who?

There is no doubt a portion of the fans are obnoxious. Many just love to complain. This is the best era in Phills history but it still doesn't satisfy them. Madson is a VERY important piece in teams success. Right now he may be best setup man in game. He at some point will be an effective closer. To those who point out to some failures, which is the true LIdge in 08 or 09. Philladelphia doesn't own a monopoly on these jerks there all over.

    Way to go Danno.

Finally got some gossip to generate some interest. Hope dragging the Madsons family through the mud was worth it.

I dont know Ryan Madson or his wife but they seem to be maybe the most down to earth people that any family involved in professional athletics can be.

Can Sharon Pinkerson get on the ball and get Reese Witherspoon or Bradley Cooper to do a movie shoot in Philly so Danno can stop f#*^&#@ up the mojo of this baseball team.

Don't sweat it Ryan + Sarah. You can this story has come full circle especially with turkey vultures like Danno on the scene.

This isn't a Philadelphia thing. I'm from Pittsburgh originally and, if she thinks members of the Steelers aren't treated like rock starsm she's insane. In Green Bay people still visit the house Vince Lombardi owned 50 years ago. It's like that in any pro sports town.

I actually feel bad that she had those experiences with the "fans". If I saw them...and I am a huge Phillies fan, I would not bother them at all. I understand that the comments makes her and her husband look bad, but if that's what she is going through, then she's just being honest. Maybe some loser women will back off....but I doubt it.

After reading some of "fans" post only tells me that an excon who stalked some poor guy and a fugetive from justice has more creidablity then the wife and the mother of 4 childred of a profession ball player. Really did you miss that part of the story line yet you say poor things about Sarah. Then post how not pretty she is not. Just don't understand why she doesn't like the Phillies fans?

Ultimately who cares...Ryan Madson has been nothing but a quality guy and Phillie from day one..hey, he kicked a chair, but it shows his passion. His wife probably was lamenting about a few fans who gave her grief. That is far from the norm. As far as hanging out in Philly in the off season..who in gods name would want do hang in Philly and slog through the cold and snow when they could be somewhere else..they have the money, who cares where they go in the off season. Whole thing is a non story trying to rile up Phillies fans. Sorry reporter...I am not going for it.

This is another case of "It must be true - it's on the internet!" From what was reported on the radio yesterday, Goldman has nothing written nor recorded of Sarah Madson saying this or anything. If she's such a good "reporter" how come she has nothing to back this up?

As for fans disturbing them at dinner, yes, I've seen people do that to celebrities, and to me that's rude. There is a time and place to approach an athlete or star, and when they're trying to eat is not it.

Maybe she should leave this husband and hook up with "Nails"...I don't think she'd have to worry about the fans bothering her then (just the creditors) and she's still have her 'baseball hero'.

She could have just said something about the cleatchasers. Leave the rest of the fans who pay to see games that afford her to live her lifestyle alone. This is why I don't buy anything that celebrities make money off.

Sarah didnt know Mrs Goldmad was a reporter. Otherwise, she would have lied to her and told her what a great place Phily was. But because she didnt know she was a reporter, she gave her true feelings.
