Veteran 6ABC weather anchor Dave Roberts is expected to announce his retirement during tonight's 11 o'clock news. Roberts, 73, will give his last forecast on Dec. 11.
Roberts, whose real name is David Thomas Boreanaz, joined WPVI in 1978 and started as co-host of the station’s “AM Philadelphia,” and an afternoon weather anchor. He joined the evening newscasts after the skydiving death of his friend and colleague Jim O’Brien in 1983.
Roberts, also known for being the father of actor David Boreanaz, has spent 56 years in TV news.
In a statement released tonight, Roberts says "My family and I are most grateful to all the viewers for their kindness over so many years. I have also been blessed to work with the wonderful people at WPVI - my 6abc family. Their support and caring continue to guide me. My wife Patti and I approach the future with the same excitement and hope which we had when we arrived here thirty-one years ago. Thanks for all the memories as those memories are now treasures which will be stored in our hearts forever. Laughter, a smile and a kind word will always fill your day with sunshine."
Roberts and Patti toasted his retirement with another couple over dinner Tuesday at Scannicchio's (Broad & Porter) where the weather anchor went for a veal chop.

Some people wait to long to hit the road. Too many of the young with new families need work. More should move over, especially when they hit 60. Dave has the money, he just took too long. FJG JR
My money is on Adam Joseph stepping up. Dave's been great but I won't miss him at special events like the 4th of July celebrations. Just a little too corny. phljoe
I hope Erica Grow gets the main weatherperson job at Action News. She's the best that they've got over there. Joseph DeSantis
Hire one of Hurricane's ex wives. mick314
iT'S weird how some folks on local tv news become such a part of our lives. You wake up and start your day with them. They tell you what is going on in your community. Without knowing them they become part of you life. Definitely wish him well and certain people earn the right to stick around as long as they want whether its Dave Roberts or Joe Paterno. I met Dave Roberts years ago and he was very gracious. In fact, my mom was supposed to be at the affair we were attending but was ill, and when Dave heard that, he actually sent my mom a note wishing her well. Sign of a true gentleman and good person. I have always liked his folksy style and will miss him. Dave, I wish you a long, happy and healthy retirement! catharine_christian_carpenter
