DJ Too Tuff, battling cancer behind bars, hopes for pre-trial release
DJ Too Tuff was among prisoners who were visited by Mayor Nutter and former mayor the Rev. W. Wilson Goode on New Year's Day at the House of Correction, where the Tuff Crew member is incarcerated.
Too Tuff, aka Joseph Hicks, a St. Joe's Prep grad who toured the world in the 1980s with the famous Philly rap group, was asked to serve as soundman for an inspirational session for inmates at which Nutter, Goode and a host of clergy spoke. Each Jan. 1, the mayors visit and speak to inmates at the city prisons along State Road.
Hicks, 41, awaits trial, on Feb. 9, on an assault charge stemming from a November 2008 fight at Silk City (5th & Spring Garden). Because he is on probation from a weed-possession charge, Hicks is being held without bail. However, as he is battling thyroid cancer, Hicks is petitioning for a pretrial release due to medical reasons in a Jan. 12 hearing.
