Chink's Steaks (6030 Torresdale) is taking over Tugboat Annie's (901 S. Columbus) and opening a smaller take-out-only Chink's Steaks there in late March, says Chink's owner Joseph Groh. He takes over the property March 1 and says he will be up and running by the beginning of Phillies season. He may put in some outside tables. Groh says he's not too worried about any backlash about the shop's name, which had drawn ire from Asian-Americans several years back. Chink's was the childhood nickname given to the restaurant's late former owner Samuel Sherman.

There's nothing wrong with PC, but all things in moderation. Before you climb up on the soapbox and ASSUME Chink's refers to an ethnic slur, do your homework. I grew up in Philadelphia, and in grade school played a game almost every day called Chink. It's similar to handball, but if you hit the ball and it hits the point where the wall touchs the ground, the other guy calls CHINKS, and the first guy loses. That is as likely a reason for the name as because the original guy looked asian. Take it easy, enjoy a good cheesesteak, and save your ire for the true inequalities of the world - abused children, racial violence and fat girls who muffin top.

that's the thing. if it was called n-word steaks, this shop would be gone already. why is it ok this time? don't say it's not offensive because if someone called you a racist term, you would not be cool with it.

Oriental is a rug. People will be offended if you call them that name. SO, don't call anyone that! If the food is good, who cares what the name is. Of course, if a white guy opened a "steak shop" and called it the n-word what would people say? Food brings people together and makes people happy. Don't let a name bring you down.

jroll - freedom of speach is not without limits where did you study law in the comic books. Get real - don't reference the Constitution unless you know what you are talking about - otherwise just more bar stool philosphy eah.

You know, what really is wrong with Philadelphia and the world at large is potentially politically incorrect cheesesteak shops. (sarcasm). I also like someone affiliated with the University of Delaware (that's you UDel) using an ethnic slur to point out why ethnic insensitivity is bad. If you are that sensitive maybe you should associate yourself with a school that's mascot honors the states history of cock fighting.

The name is offensive and south Philly doesn't need another steak shop anyway.

The best cheese steak is in Blue Bell, PA. Geno's and Pat's are for the tourists.

Pat's, Geno's, Tony Luke's, Ralph's, Willie's, and now CHINKS? The name is very offensive and there are many Asians in the area. Why don't you use the name Joe's or Sam's. Atleast the customers will think that it's Italian even though it isn't.

Hey Loren, you're obviously not a real Philadelphian, as you clearly do not understand the psychology of 'rowhouse Philadelphia'. We don't do political correctness here. So kindly pack up your protest signs, pamphlets and your doc sider shoes and hightail it back to Portland, OR, wouldja?

You forgot to mention that Sherman was given that nickname because his eyes were somewhat slanted. Because of this fact, the owners claim "Chink's" isn't meant to be offensive, but of course it is. Another politically incorrect, insensitive, Steak shop in Philly..

hmmm..maybe I should open up a cheesesteak joint and call it "Guido's Steaks" because that's what they used to call me when I was a kid, since I had greasy hair.
