Why did NBC News fail to air the most damning/interesting portion of its Bob Costas/Jerry Sandusky interview in November? Station plans follow up piece on Thursday's "Rock Center with Brian Williams."

NBC News discusses decision to not air complete Sandusky story, plans follow-up Thursday

You’ve heard about the prosecution in the Jerry Sandusky case presenting un-aired portions of the Bob Costas interview with the disgraced Penn State coach and purported child rapist that aired on NBC’s “Rock Center with Brian Willams” in November.

By most accounts and in our opinion Costas did a great job interviewing Sandusky with only 15 minutes notice, but it turns out he did an even better job, by pointedly asking Sandusky if he was “Describing the classic MO of many pedophiles? And that is that they gain the trust of young people, they don’t necessarily abuse every young person.”

Sandusky’s reply, in part, sounds damning: “And I didn’t go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I’ve helped. There are many that I didn’t have — I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways.’’

We asked NBC News why this portion of the interview didn’t run during the 48 minute broadcast which included Costas discussing the story with Williams after the interview aired.

“There were many compelling comments that we included in the time period we had and we are very proud of this interview,” an NBC News spokeswoman told us Tuesday.

The network news spokeswoman confirmed information we had received that "Rock Center with Brian Williams" will air another story about Sandusky and its interview factoring into the trial on Thursday's episode, which airs at 10 p.m.

It turns out however that the entire transcript has been published on CentreDaily.com, the online home of the Centre Daily Times in State College, PA since Nov. 16
and had also been distributed by NBC to national media outlets.

So the media, including the Philadelphia Daily News, had time to pounce on these quotes earlier.
