Phils send Bonilla and Lindblom to Texas for Young

POSTED: Saturday, December 8, 2012, 1:42 PM

UPDATE: Baseball sources have confirmed that the Phillies have completed the trade that will bring Michael Young to Philadelphia as the team's primary third baseman.

The Rangers will pay $10 million of Young's $16 million contract for the 2013 season and get relievers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla in return.

Read more about the trade in Sunday's Inquirer.

The deal that would bring Michael Young to the Phillies as their primary third baseman moved a step closer to completion Saturday when he informed officials from the Texas Rangers that he'd accept the trade.

Young, who has spent his entire big-league career in Texas, had the right to reject the trade because he has spent 10 years in the big leagues, including five with the same team.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported Young's decision on Twitter, but noted that financial details between the Phillies and Rangers still needed to be completed before the trade was finalized. A baseball source confirmed Young's decision.

Young, 36, will be entering the final year of a five-year contract that will pay him $16 million in 2013. Speculation has been that the Rangers will agree to eat about $8 million.

No details have surfaced about what the Rangers will get in return from the Phillies. A Dallas Morning News story Wednesday night indicated Texas was looking for a young reliever with big-league experience and a low-level prospect.

The Phillies have a long list of young relievers with a modicum of big-league experience, thanks in part to all the auditions they conducted last season. That list includes Michael Schwimer, Jake Diekman, Jeremy Horst, Justin De Fratus, Phillippe Aumont, Josh Lindblom, Michael Stutes and B.J. Rosenberg. Schwimer is the reliever they'd be most willing to trade.

Who is the author, Matt or Bob? You're the first people using past tense on the story, as in 'done deal.'

Really nice one year stop gap until Asche is ready (hopefully)...compared to the available 3B options, this is one of the better ones...also a decent trade chip to a contender if the Phil's fail to make the postseason for a second year...now sign Polanco for 1 or 2 million on a one year deal to give Utley a spell at 2B or 3B and pinch hitting.

good pick up. should fit in well with the team. why not bring his teammate Josh Hamilton on board to ease the transition?:-) utley's salary will be gone next year and we will need to replace his bat. phils should go over the cap now and make sure they have two power hitters in howard and hamilton to help the aces get to the promised land. pick up a veteran starter for the five spot until the kids are ready to take the spot. and trade for or sign a solid 8th inning guy like Villenueva.

Here is what MLBTraderumors.com is posting:

The Phillies have acquired Michael Young from the Rangers according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter links). Young will receive $1.2MM in benefits in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause, but Nightengale says (on Twitter) he told the Phillies he did not want an extension.

The Rangers have agreed to pay $10MM of the $16MM owed to Young next season, reports Nightengale (on Twitter). Earlier today Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reported that Josh Lindblom and minor leaguer Lisalverto Bonilla would head to Texas in the trade, which MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has confirmed.

L Bonillla and homerun Lindbomb go in the trade, and that's another bonus -- great trade!
Bonilla has lots of promise when he broke his finger goofing around in the futures all star game while in AA and missed half the season. Promising, but more important we kept Defreatus Aumont Horst and Diekman.

HighWater: I'd love to learn the backstory here, how much influence C Lee had in Young's decision. You gotta believe Young reached out to Lee, and Lee said "yeah, come." And I don't think it's 'pie-in-the-sky' that Phils could be a mystery-team in the Hamilton talks. Hamilton shouldn't be happy enough w/ only option to leaving Texas being the Mariners. But with a contender that he's got buddies with? ... Now that's a more likeable possibility for him.

Good....Young hit a great .321 against lefties, so he can also give Utley and Howard a day off against lefties..

If this pans out, we get a serviceable third baseman with a great dugout presence, a legitimate lead off hitter who can play centerfield like Maddox or Ashburn. What could go wrong? Jimmy Rollins pouting about moving to 2nd in the lineup. Jimmy, as fine a player as he is, is a Cancer in a Clubhouse that needs Positive Energy.

An OK solution for 1 year. Let's hope Asche can be the future solution.

You can bang on Rollins about a lot of stuff, but he is not a cancer in the locker room. He is a leader whom the other players respect even if the fans do not. he brings a winnig attitude. It was Rollins who set the tone in the locker room in the WS years and brought the idea that the team should expect to win.
