"When you expect a team to win, believe me, that goes a long way," Jimmy Rollins said.

Phil Sheridan has a crazy idea for Phillies fans at Citizens Bank Park this week for the National League division series:

When the Phillies begin their playoff series here tomorrow, let's pack up all the built-up anxiety and unhappy history and put it on ice somewhere. Everything from 1964 to Black Friday to Joe Carter to Kaz Matsui gets tied in a sack, weighted down and thrown into the Schuylkill.

On Saturday evening, over the din of the clinching celebration, oracle and shortstop Jimmy Rollins said something that stuck.

"The fans here, they were expecting us to win," Rollins said, gesturing toward the still-giddy faithful cheering and smiling in the stands. "When you expect a team to win, believe me, that goes a long way."

Rollins has said something like that before. It just sounded better this time because the word "front runners" didn't precede it. Yep, Rollins talked about how the energy at Citizens Bank Park affects the players on the field, whether fans want to admit that or not.

"Negative energy doesn't produce anything positive," Rollins said in front of his locker at Dodger Stadium in August. "That's just the truth. ... Take the team that you have and push them to do better. Don't take Black Friday and put that on these new guys. Some of them don't even know (about it)."

Like I've said before, players sense restlessness in the stands. They sense anger and frustration. They've said it doesn't help. I had a former Phillies player tell me a little more than a year ago that he wonders if negative energy breeds negative results in Philadelphia. He was serious. He believes the negative energy in Philadelphia plays a big role in its 25-year championship drought. Is he crazy? Maybe. Or maybe he's totally sane.

That might be why Sheridan wondered:

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. Imagine a parade down Broad Street. It's easy if you try.

We can do this. We have nothing to lose except losing.

Larry Bowa has kept an eye on Rollins and Chase Utley from Los Angeles and beyond. He calls them the best double play combo in baseball. The Phillies and Dodgers could play each other in the NL championship series, if things break right.

*

Ryan Howard had a helluva September. The Phillies are hoping he carries that into October.

It looked like the Brewers needed a miracle to turn around their season after the Phillies swept them earlier this month. They didn't.

Gotta give Todd Z props for saying he's not rooting for his hometown Brewers. I am going to take Phil S's advice and think postive thoughts going into the NLDS. Are the games being broadcast on WPHT radio or are we stuck with TBS?

Phil Sheridan can pound sand. We've been disappointed for 25 years. I'll be positive, but when Carlos Ruiz grounds into a double play for the 200th time this year, don't I have the right to boo?

We should make copies of that article and hand them out at the Park on Weds. I have to agree with Jimmy. We need to be behind them from start to finish.

Thanks Gary....I wasn't sure since in today's they Inquirer only listed TBS (usually the list both). That's a relief also since Saturday's broadcast & those on ESPN(with the exception of T-Mac) proved how terrific our TV/radio announcers are...even Sarge & Wheels.

I feel a lot more confident this year. The Phils are still inconsistent but they seem to be doing better under pressure. I think the Brewers are ripe for the picking since Ben Sheets is unavailable. GO PHILS!!!!!

The Phillies are going to win this series. Not guaranteeing anything, but I do firmly believe that they are going to win. They have the better lineup, they have the better bullpen (especially with the way Ryan Madson has pitched since that nightmare in Chicago), and they have the better starting rotation (since Sheets is out and everything else after CC is a huge question mark). They are playing their best baseball right now, and they are not happy just to be there. I am so much more excited, and so much less nervous, about this series than I was the Colorado series last year. I will be there tomorrow, and I am confident I will see the Phillies take a 1-0 series lead. Let's go, Phils!!!

Would it be possible to ban Matt (above) from the ballpark? "Don't I have the right to boo?" Duh. Yes, of course you have the right. But why? What purpose does it serve? Will it prevent Carlos Ruiz ever grounding into another double play? Will it change the result? No. And once again I will voice my support of Carlos Ruiz... I like him. He had a real bad first four months at the plate. But I think he is a pretty darn good catcher, and I know he is a better hitter than he has shown most of this season, as evidenced by his noticeably more productive August and September at the plate. Booing one bad AB will not help them be more productive in the next AB.

RWR I agree! I'm always amazed at Ruiz's flexibility behind the plate (especially when he does those splits)I think he has had a good couple of months especially since he's been catching more (except when Myers is pitching)

I will be there tomorrow too. I am a lot more excited as well about this series. We really need to get on this young pitcher tomorrow for the Brewers. I think he will fold under the pressure.

Sorry guys, put me in the "what a load of dung" column on Sheridan's article. Pure drivel. The first 2 playoff games last season the Bank wasn't electric? The fans were obsessed with 25 years of losing? Black friday? Puleesse! I always expected them to win (except when Koufax was pitching), and as a fan since the late fifties, how's that worked out? The Vet rocked in 76-77-78-80-83-93, but we were negative the other years? We will be cheering our lungs out Wednesday and Thursday, because the team deserves it and we are fans, but if they lose it will be because we aren't positive enough? Methinks not. And let me guess, the former player was Leiby?

Definitely agree that the fans react to what happens on the field. However, I believe the excitement of the fans can certainly have an impact on the players, just as the negativity of the fans can impact the players. True, professional athletes are just that...professionals...and as such should be able to perform under any conditions. But players are humans first and foremost and will never be perfect. I think fans can be disappointed and occasionaly boo, but Philly fans are sometimes too quick to go down that road. In the end, negativity rarely help people to perform better. I also feel better about the playoffs this year and I'm looking forward to a series win against the Brewers. I think all fans should go into this with a positive attitude and do whatever we can to help this team win...even if it is only a tiny part.

Lidge was named NL Comeback Player of the Year. Maybe this is a good omen... the winning will continue.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
