Worley to have season-ending surgery

POSTED: Wednesday, August 29, 2012, 3:12 PM

Vance Worley's season is over.

The Phillies announced Tuesday that Worley has been placed on the disabled list because of a right elbow injury that will require surgery. The team said he will undergo surgery in the next seven to 10 days.

Bone chips were discovered in Worley's elbow when he was forced to go on the disabled list in the middle of May. His ERA in his last five starts, including Tuesday's game against the New York Mets, was 6.75. He had a 5.80 in his final 11 starts.

Worley said after Tuesday's game that his elbow had "zero effect" on his pitching problems. Manager Charlie Manuel said Worley has had real difficulty commanding his pitches.

After a sensational rookie season in which he went 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA, Worley will likely show up at spring training next year fighting for a job in the rotation. While Worley spends September on the disabled list, righthander Tyler Cloyd will make a September audition, starting with his major-league debut in Wednesday night's game against the Mets.

Cloyd, a combined 15-1 with a 2.26 ERA at double-A Reading and triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, is filling in for an ill Cole Hamels Wednesday, but should remain in the rotation because of Worley's injury.

It will be interesting to see how this kid reacts to getting knocked around at the MLB level. Yes, he has been great in the minors, but he hit 90 mph? How will survive this league..........and the media for that matter. When he gets rocked, this town will jump all over him.

Pedge, thats what ive been saying all along about the minor league players.By the time they get called up, they need surgery and their arms are like rubber bands. Some are so old that when they actually see the big leagues, they are veterans....lmao!!!
