The photo speaks for itself.

The headline? I've been covering the Phillies for six seasons, and I've been joking for years about putting the phrase "World Serious" into one of my stories. You know, something like, "The Phillies are World Serious." Of course, it's way too cheesy to put in the paper. But the good news is that it's too cheesy to use as a headline for this blog.

World Serious.

Wow.

The Phillies beat the Dodgers last night in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, 5-1, to clinch their first World Series berth since 1993. Ready or not, folks, the Phillies have a chance to win their first championship in 28 years. And the city has a chance to win its first championship in 25 years.

"This is going to be the year," Charlie Manuel said. "I can feel it, yeah."

I'm not sure what they showed on TV last night, but it was a very cool scene after the game as Phillies fans lingered behind the visitor's dugout and chanted everything from, "Four more wins! Four more wins!" to "We want beer! We want beer!"

*

Phil Sheridan talks about the chance of finally bringing Philly a championship.

*

Bob Ford writes about NLCS MVP Cole Hamels.

*

Jim Salisbury takes us Inside the Game, and also talks about the very select group Manuel has joined.

*

John Gonzalez can't believe what he just saw. Gonzo, Ford and Sheridan talk about the LA experience.

*

Dodgers fans are terrible. I actually saw a trail of tail lights in the parking lot in the fourth inning. No joke. Dodgers fans were leaving the game in the fourth inning. Even at their loudest, they couldn't match the enthusiasm I've heard in Philly in the NLDS and NLCS.

Manuel said he expects the Bank to be noisy as hell during the World Series.

*

Jimmy Rollins got things going in the first inning. ... Geoff Jenkins had a hell of a day. ... If Hamels wasn't NLCS MVP, it would have been Shane Victorino. ... Bill Giles talks about this fantastic feeling. ... World Series begins in six days. Are you ready? ... My advice: try to enjoy the moment as much as possible. You know how rare these moments are.

Just got a call from my daughter at Temple. Broad St. is closed down and it's basically chaos. Some guys she knows just took off with a huge gang to run to City Hall. Unbelievable. This team has taken the city by storm. And what a great group! Jimmy, Shane, Jayson, Chase, Ryan, Pat, Pedro, Carlos, Greg, Matt, Greg, Chris, Cole, Brett, Jamie, Big Joe, Brad, JC, Chad, Ryan M, Clay, Rudy, Kyle, JA, So... all coaches, and most of all, Charlie Manuel. You are a class act and you do us all proud. Keep it rollin', fellas!

The instant they threw at Victorino's head a game ago, I thought "the Dodgers just sealed their fate. In one instant they've become the Mets. We've got this series won now." It seems like this Phillies team is so emblematic of Philly and all that Philly craves--an awesome array of talent, specialized role players, oodles of managerial experience, all fueled by competitive juices. As much as winning, Philadelphians care how they win. That's what makes this Phillies team the best of all the Philly teams in the past 15 years. We want the Jimmy Rollins quote and the play to back it up. We want our players to thank their hands for being so great, make predictions, then play their hearts out to achieve it. We want the villains slain and the heroics. Go Phillies and Go Philly! --wish I was back in Philly, and not stuck here in Chicago. --Mikey O'

This has got to be one of the greatest games I've ever attended. I am so proud of these guys, words cannot express my true feelings and they have not won it all yet. I have to also admit, I am no longer a Charlie hater, in fact when he went out to talk to Cole, I thought he would get the hook, but the man stood with him and that surprised the handfull of Phillies fans in my section. You just knew from the beginning this was going to be the day. After the game was over about 100 Phillies fans got together in the lower level with a few transplants who had a sheet with you gotta believe and the "P" on it as the LA fans left. All these guys contribute at some point and tonight others stepped up. I wish we didn't have to wait a week for this thing to start. What really is amazing is they love to play for Charlie and when was the last time a Phillies team collectively wanted to play for the manager. It turned me around. My credit cards are now closed to being maxed out so I wonder if I can swing a few more games. This is too good. We can do this.

I'm very jealous davegas! They showed the big group of Phils fans in the lower level on TV after the game - that was cool. This is just great. They derserve it. Baseball can be funny. The best team doesn't always win, but this time it did. The Phillies are the best team in the NL, and this pennant is well-deserved. They belong in the World Series. They did everything in this series - two-out hits, stellar defense, big-time bullpen work, good leadership, baserunning, whatever it took. The World Series will be a huge challenge, but I think this group has what it takes!

Not only did the Phils win the series but they exposed Russell Martin for what he is...a whiny, complaining little sissy girl. We should chip in and get him a Phillies dress.

Wow. just wow. I was 13 when The Dude Krukker and the rest went to the World Series and didn't fully understand the game back then. No that I've been following the team religiously over the past few years, this seems SOOOOO much sweater. The Phils are definitely the most deserving team in the NL to represent. I'm sure the national media won't give us a snowball's chance to win this thing. But crazy stuff happens: 06 Cardinals, 04 Red Sox, 03 Marlins. The games have to be played, and we have an awesome team to root for. And oh yeah, NO MORE MANNY COVERAGE!!!! WHOO HOO!!

As discussed in one of the posts from yesterday, I love how the team didn't celebrate too hard. I actually think FOx and ESPN were annoyed that the players were laid back about winning. But they all said the right thing: this is only part of it, they still have 4 more games to win. Some how I don't expect the same reaction from the Rays players.

I just can't believe how fast this all happened. It seemed like one minute we're down 5-3 in game 4 and it looks like the Dodgers are going to even the series, then the next minute Lidge is getting Nomar to pop out to clinch the pennant. It's a funny thing. None of the games felt that easy but, looking back now, the Phils really did dispatch the Dodgers with ease. I think that says a lot about the ball club we have.

One other thing that struck me... I thought it was VERY classy of Pat Gillick to give praise to Ed Wade at the trophy presentation after the game. Good presence of mind, lots of class.

Thankfully I don't have to hear that stupid "I Love LA" song anymore. And since the eagles are off this week I know I will get a full week away from Joe Buck.

What a great ending. Too bad Victorino didn't get the MVP but Cole deserved it just as much. I remember game 6 of the 1980 series and the celebration after we won, I can't wait to go through that again!! What a classy team who is showing how everyone is important. To all of those (myself included) who siad, "matt who? Why didn't we get a real pitcher at trade deadline? We need a real catcher!" It is time to stand up and apologize. Stairs, Blanton and Ruiz came through when it counted!!
