MILWAUKEE -- Charlie Manuel will field a lineup missing Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins in the opener to an anticipated series with the Brewers.
Utley, of course, remains in Philadelphia and is unlikely to play at all this weekend. He must wait two days before taking an IMPACT test that will ascertain how serious his concussion symptoms are. The Phillies do not believe the concussion is serious, but they will exert caution with a massive September lead.
Howard is (relatively) healthy and can play, but Manuel decided with lefty Chris Narveson on the mound that it was a good time to rest Howard. Look for the first baseman to receive regular days off for the remainder of the season to heal the nagging bursitits in his left foot.
And Rollins was activated from the disabled list Thursday, but he will serve only an emergency role for now. He can pinch-hit, Manuel said, but if he reaches base he will be run for. Rollins is effectively day-to-day and the team is not sure when he will return to a starting role.
So, the lineup looks interesting:
1. Shane Victorino 8
2. Wilson Valdez 6
3. Placido Polanco 5
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. John Mayberry Jr. 3
6. Carlos Ruiz 2
7. Ben Francisco 7
8. Michael Martinez 4
9. Cole Hamels 1
