What the Yankees are saying about the Phillies

POSTED: Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 3:00 PM

Should Brett Myers be on the roster?
Yes
No

UPDATE: Brett Myers in on the World Series roster, replacing Miguel Cairo.  The team's rationale was that Myers looked much improved throwing two simualted games and two bullpen sessions this week, and there were too few off days in the series to go without 12 pitchers. Also, the DH in the AL park makes an extra pinch-hitter less necessary.

From earlier:

Good afternoon from workout day Yankee Stadium.  The two cities may be jawing back and forth, but the teams respect one another—or have all internalized their media training.

Here are some Yankee comments from just a few moments ago:

Jorge Posada on CC Sabathia on the field and off: “He’s been throwing a lot more curveballs.  He’s been attacking the hitters. We want him to stay aggressive…. he’s always there.  He’s fun.  When he is not pitching, he likes to keep it fun in between starts.  He works out, he does a lot of things that you like to see.”

On the Phils lineup: “They have a good lineup.  They’re set.  Filling the position with Ibanez really made them a lot better, a lot tougher throughout.  Carlos Ruiz had a great playoff, so you have to pay attention to everyone.”

On not appearing in the WS since 2003: It has been a long time.  Hopefully we can get those first butterflies out of the way and play ball.

Derek Jeter on facing the Phils now vs. in May:  “They’re a different team now. They’re playing really well, they have a lot of confidence. I don’t even know what we’re facing now….They’re world champs.  They won last year.  They pretty much have a lot of the same guys they had last year, so it’s no fluke that they’re back.”

Jeter on Cliff Lee: “Cliff, he’s a lot better than when he first came up.  Now he knows how to pitch.  He used to just rear back and throw.”

On why it took so long for the Yanks to get back to the series: “When you advance in the playoffs, every round gets more and more difficult, and every team gets better and better.”

Johnny Damon on Jimmy Rollins’ prediction on Jay Leno that the Phils would win: “What do you expect him to say?  You have to have that confidence…I’m sure his fans liked it when he said that.”

On the Yanks’ strategy against Lee: “He works fast, so he tries to disrupt your timing.  He throws strikes on both sides of the plate. And he knows what to do.”

Does mean you have to try to work the count, slow down the game? “Possibly.  He does work fast.”

Damon on the Phils: “We know they’re a confident team. They’ve played well all year.  I like the fact that we have to play the defending world champions.

A-Rod’s keys to the series: “Power is a big weapon for both teams……..Two Hall of Fame shortstops, and two great leaders.”

The Phillies will be available to the media shortly.  For more Yankee-related news, visit my man Mark Feinsand’s blog at the New York Daily News.  That’s the paper that did NOT refer to the Phils as the Frillies.

A-Rod did make a ridiculous statement. Jimmy Rollins a Hall of Famer? A-Rod must be on heroin, not steroids to make a statement like that. I can still remember Harry Kalas talking about the future Hall of Famer Juan Samuel!!

I think the Yankees respect to Phillies to the extent that there must be some team for them to play on their way to winning the World Series! It really wouldn't matter who the opponent is at the end of the day. It will be obvious to all who watch this series who the dominant team is. I think the fans of the Phillies are going to be in for a treat as they see the dismantling of their beloved team on a level that will defy logic. It will be a mystical experience. I recommend that each fan of the Phillies get plenty of rest and exercise because there could very well be some adverse long term consequences otherwise. NY Yanks in 5 games... See ya!

I personally don't like all articles written by homers. It's boring and I want honesty. Give the guy a shot. His job is to get readers. Philly has suffered for a long time and we all suffer together. If this guy wants to show that he is a Yankees fan and stir things up with Philly fans, I say bring it on. We will continue to read his articles and rub it in his face when "Our Boys" win back-to-back. Either way, the media will say either the Yankees won the World Series, or that they lost it. Philly gets no respect. This will make is so much better when we squeak out a repeat!

I will take the high road. Yes, the Yankees are a daunting opponent and it will make a victory over them even more exciting than '08, but this talk of 4-5 game victories may be a little unrealistic for either side. Two things the Phillies have going in their favor, a built in chemsitry that comes from the core players being together since AA ball and "High Hopes"

Jorge Posada says its been a long time since they've been to the WS! Is he serious?? Its been 6 whole years! WOW its a lifetime!! What a moron! Thats exactly the kind of cockiness that I want the Phillies to beat out of the Yankees. Its all ive been hearing on TV too. All day on ESPN i keep hearing "the Yankees havent been to the WS since 2003" as if to say its been soooo long. Please! I wanna vomit when i hear that garbage. Thats almost as hilarious yet annoying as when Girardi said after they clinched the ALCS that he wants to "win the WS for Steinbrenner, he deserves another WS" Are you freakin kidding me? he DESERVES another WS??? Is he high!?? He's got 26 of them and this idiot is acting like he's suffering over there. Geez Steinbrenner has it so tough as the owner. That guy just cant catch a break. He hasnt had a WS win since 2000 when they won their 3rd WORLD SERIES IN A ROW!! You know what i dont want this to be a good close series. I hope the Phillies embarrass the Yankees!

To the goyankees guy that posted on here.. Are you really that dumb? The trash version of the Post? Are you that clueless?? The Post is trash! Its a wannabe newspaper. Even NY people have said it. Its a tabloid. The Post is a joke of a newspaper and always has been and that has nothing to do with the Victorino thing. The Post is what it is. Its junk. By the way im all for having honest fun and trash talk but that NY Post picture and article was so corny i didnt know whether to laugh or feel sorry for them. The Frillies? and Victorino wearing a skirt. WOW REALLY? I mean thats not even clever! If your gonna poke fun at least make it funny. I guess that was supposed to be a clever joke instead of saying Phillies they're saying Frillies LMAO. NOT! That sounds like something a elementary school kid came up with. And to Jdmadda, I see what your saying but tell me why in the world we would be jealous of the Mets or the Red Sox?? What is there to be jealous of? The Mets suck and the Red Sox are sitting at home watch US on TV in the playoffs once again.
