What happened with Durbin

POSTED: Thursday, July 23, 2009, 6:57 PM

This is what happened with Chad Durbin. He has felt mild pain in the lat muscle, located just below the shoulder blade, for several weeks, but believed he could pitch through it. After feeling the pain worsen, and not having command yesterday, he realized he needed to tell the team he was hurt.

Rich Dubee expressed disappointment with Durbin’s communication. “I don’t know if he’s been hiding it or what,” Dubee said. “He’s been masking it for a month and he shouldn’t have.”

Asked if he felt angry with Durbin, Dubee said: “I don’t like guys not to tell me the truth, so yeah…Angry? No. Disappointed? Yeah.”

“The timing of when it started happening was when all three guys were on the D.L, and I didn’t think it was that big an issue at first,” Durbin said. “It was one of those things where communication probably would have been...It wasn’t like I was hiding it on purpose, it was more a little bit of the stubbornness of me, thinking I could do it on my own.”

This is always a tricky thing in sports-when do you admit to yourself and others that you are hurt?

Romero was more straightforward, and the team has known since Friday that he was hurt. Dubee and Manuel said they were okay with having just one lefty out there for a while, and that Andrew Carpenter would probably pitch in long relief but could see later inning action. Tyler Walker acquitted himself well last time up, and was recalled again.

Romero expects to be back when eligible, and said he would probably be ready sooner. Durbin did not yet know his timetable.

Dubee needs to ask Lidge if he feels good..He hasn't looked effective since he came off the disabled list. Durbin tried to work it out.

Actually we do need his opinion when it comes to anything related to his pitchers because they are his pitchers and he is the pitching coach. What do you not understand about that. Also... what on earth did Dubee say that was so wrong anyway?

Well at least they're getting their injuries out of the way now. Id rather they be hurt now in July when we have a decent size division lead than have this problem in september and october. This is another reason why we need a pitcher like Halladay because he can pitch deep into games, if not complete games and give our bullpen a rest. We dont need another pitcher that can only go 6 or 7 innings. Those types of pitchers are a dime a dozen

These guys could win 150 game and some of you idiots wouldn't be satisfies. Durbin tried to pitch through it, now he needs to rest it ..so friggin what...Dubee said and did the right things..no matter how mild an injury feels, you need to let the coaches know..no big deal..lighten up people...you making mountains out of mole hills....

Though it's admirable that he pitched through some pain..esp. while other members from the pen went on the DL...Durbin should have been more forthcoming. We've got a enough people in the minors to cover for him. I don't think Dubee needs to apologize..after all, if the pen implodes, it'll be all on the pitching coach so Dubee has a right to be upset 'cause he's responsible. Besides that Durbin could do more harm to himself than good by pitching hurt. He's an important part of this team and he needs to realize that.

WHat, you don't think that all 25+ players on the roster are feeling a bit hurt by now>? Aches, pains, bruises etc. He tried to pitch threw it nd when he realized it was too much to do, and it was effecting his game he opened up. Exactly what he should have done. As for Brunlett, this is baseball. We don't have defensive teams and offensive teams (at least not in the NL). If you can't hit you don't make the team. What's hard to undersatnd?

Nice to see some broad minded views of baseball players and their ups and downs in here. I totally agree that hurt players are in a bind about when to speak up and when to try and play through something...and I fully support cutting Durbin some slack.
