Werth bats leadoff

POSTED: Wednesday, June 2, 2010, 10:55 AM

Nothing else has worked, so why not? Charlie Manuel will bat Jayson Werth leadoff for Wednesday's series finale against Atlanta.

Werth will play centerfield as Shane Victorino gets a day off. Carlos Ruiz also has the day off. Ben Francisco gets a start in rightfield against a righty, Derek Lowe.

The Phillies have scored 13 runs in their last 10 games.

The lineup:

1. Jayson Werth
2. Wilson Valdez
3. Chase Utley
4. Ryan Howard
5. Ben Francisco
6. Raul Ibanez
7. Greg Dobbs
8. Brian Schneider
9. Kyle Kendrick

Is this triple A or the Phils? Here is what the lineup should be: Werth Utley Ibanez Howard Victorino Dobbs Ruiz whatever loser plays shortshop the pitcher Moving Werth to leadoff means he uses his speed and his ability to get on base. Utley's best years were when he batted second. If you put Ibanez third he will get better pitches to hit so his BA and OBP will improve. Victorino is driving in runs and not stealing so batting him behind Howard is not going to hurt your baserunning. Dobbs needs about 150-200 AB's a year to be effective. Ruiz is doing good but he'll be batting .250 by September. If you're depending on Valdez or Castro to carry the offense then this team is in trouble.

Who knows whats going to work at this point. Werth is going to strike out, Utley is going to watch every single 1st-pitch-strike come across the plate without moving the bat off his shoulder, Victorino is going to swing at every 1st-pitch thrown no matter where it's at, Valdez is good for at least one double play today, if not two, Ben will pop out, Dobbs and Ibanez will finally get on base when there are two outs and no chance of a rally happening. Should be fun to watch though....

This is all tied to letting Matt Stairs and "The Beard" Bruntlett go.

Despite all the injuries, the fact that they still have Werth, Howard and Utley in that lineup means they should still be winning games. This slide is pathetic.

Not the ideal lineup, but wasn't it just a week ago that everyone was bashing Charlie for failing to rest his regulars more? Can't have it both ways.

Bruntlett couldn't even make the Washington Nationals team. Why did we keep him for 2 years?

Total panic by Manuel. There is too much talent in the lineup to not start hitting. Putting out a lineup like this will not help.

The Law of Averages is going to kick in any day now, and when it does, this slump will be a distant memory.

Charlie wants Werth to become disciplined again. For some reason he abandoned that approach the last two weeks or so. This could help him.
