Werth: 'I hate the Phillies'

Are you concerned about Chase Utley’s spring training shutdown?
Yes. He’s hurt already?
No. He’ll be ready by the opener.

Jayson Werth may have turned whatever cheers he would receive in his return to Citizens Bank Park into boos.

The Washington Post's Tom Boswell wrote about Werth in Sunday's paper. Here is an excerpt:

Once Werth got back behind the cage, Rizzo said, "I hate the [expletive] Phillies." The GM then ran off a list of borderline dirty plays and purpose pitches in recent years by the Nats' nemesis. "I hate the Phillies, too," said Werth. Unspoken, but hanging in the air was a new idea for the Nats: So, let's play more like the Phillies: mean, grimy and a little nasty.

I don't hate Werth because he did us a favor by leaving. If he hadn't gone to the Nationals, Hunter Pence wouldn't be here.

Oh good lord... look at the context. I'm sure he was just playing along with the conversation, probably with that smug look that he always had on his face while talking to the media here in Philly. Who cares?

Werth took the money, his right. Most of us would have a hard time turning their back on about 40 mill. Phill also have rights to not overpay Jayson. Jayson a good all around player will be missed more his defense. Time for both parties to move on.

Werth is an 08 Phillie for life. hes just trying to make the idiot that gave him 80 million dollars feel good. The nats have to overpay to get talent at like a 2x or 3x rate over other teams. hes just trying to make his boss feel good. He likes the phillies.

Poor Jason, ticked off and bitter that he didn't get a big contract in Philly and followed the money to a mediocre team in a lukewarm market. Good for him that he got his big payday. Too bad it's making him bitter and miserable. Hey Werth, you know the saying. Don't go away mad.....

Well, I hope that he does! I would hope that any player playing against the Phils has a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the defending NL East champs. I'd also hope that the Phils players want to administer a little bit of smackdown on anyone seeking to supplant Philly as the champs of the East.

Jayson opted for money over championships- he lost a little respect in some cases when he did that. What he says now has no bearing on us anymore- he's a Nat so forget it.

Talk about focusing on an insignificant part of the Post's article. He probably was just saying that in jest. The bigger story in all of this is the lack of a true right handed power bat in the lineup.

He probably meant he hates Amaro and Montgomery or was just kidding. He loves his ex teammates. And like poster said, he will forever be remember for being part of the championship team, He's also a good reason this team became pretty good. No hating here.

Could it possibly be that slow in FL that THIS qualifies as a story. I want EVERY one of our players to HATE every single team with a white hot passion. Gee, do you think if it were 1979 that it would have been a "story" that Pete Rose hated the Mets?

For God's sake, Jayson Werthless hit the hollowest .300 of any player in baseball history last year. Almost ALL of his hits were inconsequential. When there were runners on base and his offense was needed most is when he came up the emptiest. I didn't want the Phillies to resign him and now I'm glad he's gone. Good riddance.

Is Jayson the new J.D. Drew in Philly? Will fans assault him with batteries when he trots out to right field for the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park?

I certainly hope not. It sounds as if the remark was made in jest. He was sorry to leave but took the money. He is tight with his old buddies still but now has new allegiances. No big deal.

In the real world, people move from Ford to Chrysler to Honda and still like their peers in the industry. They even sometimes joke about "hating" the dealer down the street. It just doesn't get reported in the news every day.

Good Lord, did anybody actually read the article? Understand the context, don't just read the headline. The piece was about how Werth was brought in to bring some swagger and hate-to-lose mentality to a moribund team. Personally, I'd boo him more for that .139 RISP/2-out than something like this.

He might hate the Phillies, but I bet he LOVES the money the Nats were dumb enough to pay him. Just wait till during the season, the Nats are out of contention by the end of May, he's batting .245 with 3 homers...oh how the love will rain down on him in D.C. by the 40 fans in the stands...

Definitly taken out of context. Sounds like a slow day for a reporter desperate for a big attention grabber of a story and heard this conversation and decided to maniuplate it to make Werth look worse than he already does. I think Werth has been a little immature this past offseason with how he has reacted to the whole Lee signing but i dont believe that he actually meant it when he said he hates the Phillies. The Phillies gave him his first and what will be his only worldseries title of his career. They also did something no other team did. They gave him a chance. He might not even be playing ball right now if it wasnt for the Phillies. Or maybe he'd be playing but not everyday and not at the salary he's now getting with a world series ring. i would like to think that he's a little more gracious and appreciative than that.

Lets all forget this. Losers always talk and gossip to get the attention of the better team. Like last year when we first acquired Roy Halladay, and Johan Santana said HE'S THE BEST PITCHER IN THE DIVISION. Roy said I'm not getting into any of that. That's what a winner does. I can care less what ex Phillie players say I didn't care what Curt Schilling said when we got rid of Lee for Halladay saying we could keep both, I didn't care what Brett Myers said when we let him go sayin He's gonna stick it to the Phillies, AND I DEFINENTLY DON'T CARE WHAT JAYSON WERTH SAYS BECAUSE DEEP DOWN INSIDE HE WANTED A BIG OFFER FROM THE PHILLIES WHICH HE DID NOT GET!

Much ado about nothing. The article is about Werth bringing a bit of 'tude' to the Nats' clubhouse. I was surprised at the "borderline" insinuation about how the Philllies play ball, and that Boswell would write such drivel, but in DC I guess you have to do something to get the fans out of their coma.

Werth was a good, and at times very good, player for us. We should respect what he did as a Phillie, and I'm sure we will when he comes back to town. But, he's no superstar, the Nats way overpaid him and, if he's saying he hates now, to try and gain some competitive edge, I kind of respect that. I also think he meant it a bit facetiously.

I have a lot of sympathy for Werth. The fact is that not every player can be a Phillie and that's a hard thing for players on other teams to hear. Even all that money can make him happy. Sorry, Jason, but it's not the Phillies fault that they're the only team that everyone wants to play for. At least you had a few years playing in the best city to play baseball in the world. Think of all the players that never get a chance to be a Phillie.
