Werth: 'I hate the Phillies'
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
Jayson Werth may have turned whatever cheers he would receive in his return to Citizens Bank Park into boos.
The Washington Post's Tom Boswell wrote about Werth in Sunday's paper. Here is an excerpt:
Once Werth got back behind the cage, Rizzo said, "I hate the [expletive] Phillies." The GM then ran off a list of borderline dirty plays and purpose pitches in recent years by the Nats' nemesis. "I hate the Phillies, too," said Werth. Unspoken, but hanging in the air was a new idea for the Nats: So, let's play more like the Phillies: mean, grimy and a little nasty.

First to Worst.. Money grubber! Now we hate you. travers- I don't hate Werth because he did us a favor by leaving. If he hadn't gone to the Nationals, Hunter Pence wouldn't be here. johnyk
Oh good lord... look at the context. I'm sure he was just playing along with the conversation, probably with that smug look that he always had on his face while talking to the media here in Philly. Who cares? BigMikeySmallz- I agree. This sounds like it was taken out of context.

I'd hate the Nationals, but that'd be like hating a puppy dog. JSaq
"From Werth to Last" Everybody hates a winner! mmmike22
Are the Nats sponsored by Walgreen's. ACBaughman
LOL - poor Jayson. Jerome99RIP
Werth took the money, his right. Most of us would have a hard time turning their back on about 40 mill. Phill also have rights to not overpay Jayson. Jayson a good all around player will be missed more his defense. Time for both parties to move on. Don w
Who cares what Werth said. Who are we, Lebron James now? jjenkins
Werth is an 08 Phillie for life. hes just trying to make the idiot that gave him 80 million dollars feel good. The nats have to overpay to get talent at like a 2x or 3x rate over other teams. hes just trying to make his boss feel good. He likes the phillies. CharlieGarner25
dirty plays and purpose pitches? Didn't Lannan break Utley's wrist? EarlKeese
Jealousy... Realistic One
@Earl- yes, Lannan did. I'm trying to figure out what type of dirty plays that they are talking about. Not quite sure. phillygirl17- NEXT!
- It's not even Werth it to pay attention to him anymore
Nats' nemesis? Us? michaeldhockeyguy
Poor Jason, ticked off and bitter that he didn't get a big contract in Philly and followed the money to a mediocre team in a lukewarm market. Good for him that he got his big payday. Too bad it's making him bitter and miserable. Hey Werth, you know the saying. Don't go away mad..... downtheshore- Well, I hope that he does! I would hope that any player playing against the Phils has a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the defending NL East champs. I'd also hope that the Phils players want to administer a little bit of smackdown on anyone seeking to supplant Philly as the champs of the East.
Jayson opted for money over championships- he lost a little respect in some cases when he did that. What he says now has no bearing on us anymore- he's a Nat so forget it. frankiex13- Yeah. I'm sure he HATES the Phils. Not because he's on a new team and doesn't want to alienate the fans and his new teammates. ::rolls_eyes::

Talk about focusing on an insignificant part of the Post's article. He probably was just saying that in jest. The bigger story in all of this is the lack of a true right handed power bat in the lineup. cnova000
He probably meant he hates Amaro and Montgomery or was just kidding. He loves his ex teammates. And like poster said, he will forever be remember for being part of the championship team, He's also a good reason this team became pretty good. No hating here. EL Zorro
Could it possibly be that slow in FL that THIS qualifies as a story. I want EVERY one of our players to HATE every single team with a white hot passion. Gee, do you think if it were 1979 that it would have been a "story" that Pete Rose hated the Mets? tommazza
I hate the press. Print that. ruttrho
A non story. What was he supposed to say to his teammate I still love the Phillies? He will still be cheered on his return. Move on. mikeyboy- This is a none story, period.
Werth hates the Phillies. Translation: they hurt my feelings. The Pack Leader
So??? I'd expect nothing less since he plays for the Nationals now. He can hate us all he wants, the Nats will still finish dead last. Jason will be loyal to whatever team he is being paid by. That's not so surprising. merlinknghts
"Thanks" Jason, for your help to bring a championship to Philly. And, "you're welcome" -- because i'm sure you want to thank the Phillies and fans for all they did for you. ej610
By the time Domonic Brown is done people will be saying why the hell didn't they make room for this kid earlier, just like Howard. Good luck to the Gnats, staying out of last pace, tht is! Paul SoTX
Sorry you feel that way Jayson because we really loved you..... TeeTwo
I think what he really hates is the Cliff Lee / Jayson Werth Youtube video. LGbalsac
PLAY BALL! notsofast
For God's sake, Jayson Werthless hit the hollowest .300 of any player in baseball history last year. Almost ALL of his hits were inconsequential. When there were runners on base and his offense was needed most is when he came up the emptiest. I didn't want the Phillies to resign him and now I'm glad he's gone. Good riddance. veritas1325
We will rock him with boos at CBP!!!!!!!!!! Punk. shawnmac- Is Jayson the new J.D. Drew in Philly? Will fans assault him with batteries when he trots out to right field for the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park?
I certainly hope not. It sounds as if the remark was made in jest. He was sorry to leave but took the money. He is tight with his old buddies still but now has new allegiances. No big deal.
In the real world, people move from Ford to Chrysler to Honda and still like their peers in the industry. They even sometimes joke about "hating" the dealer down the street. It just doesn't get reported in the news every day.
The Nats are coming! The Nats are coming! Run for your lives! Hahahahaha! I'm sure all 10 of their fans hate us too. phink
Let's see how cocky he is in August when the Nationals are mired in last place in the East. AHiredGun
Once again, people completely overblowing a situation. As others have said, look at the context. People will still clap for him (as they should) and then some losers will boo and complain he only left for cash...as if you wouldn't have done the same thing. aisaac
Good Lord, did anybody actually read the article? Understand the context, don't just read the headline. The piece was about how Werth was brought in to bring some swagger and hate-to-lose mentality to a moribund team. Personally, I'd boo him more for that .139 RISP/2-out than something like this. ejc527
Who cares about WERTLESS or what he says..He is with the bottom feeders now and good luck to him.. Cedrick
A non-story. Really, is it that slow of a news day. gxel
He might hate the Phillies, but I bet he LOVES the money the Nats were dumb enough to pay him. Just wait till during the season, the Nats are out of contention by the end of May, he's batting .245 with 3 homers...oh how the love will rain down on him in D.C. by the 40 fans in the stands... brimac23

Definitly taken out of context. Sounds like a slow day for a reporter desperate for a big attention grabber of a story and heard this conversation and decided to maniuplate it to make Werth look worse than he already does. I think Werth has been a little immature this past offseason with how he has reacted to the whole Lee signing but i dont believe that he actually meant it when he said he hates the Phillies. The Phillies gave him his first and what will be his only worldseries title of his career. They also did something no other team did. They gave him a chance. He might not even be playing ball right now if it wasnt for the Phillies. Or maybe he'd be playing but not everyday and not at the salary he's now getting with a world series ring. i would like to think that he's a little more gracious and appreciative than that. philliekev04
Tough talk in February .... let's get his real opinion in September, after losing every game in 2011 to the Phightins ... then he'll REALLY hate them. Phront_Runner- you got to be kidding me what a loser. can't wait for your first philly game here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has tasted his own grapes, and they are sour. Timmy
Definitely taken out of context. Just read the original article in Washington Post and he was playing around the batting cage. Non Story. WPSN
I don't know, I guess he is exercising The First Amendment. Italia1
When Jayson said this he probably said it with a smile on his face. Morons, Cataldi, Macnow, Gargano, Eskin and Missanelli will probably make it more than it is. It will be their whole show because they nothing else to talk about. Drew777

Poor baby.... justacarpenter
When a girl gets dumped they are always bitter. evenmix
They'll shut up in a couple months. That's what losing does. escapedcamden4monterey
Everbody He's being mad because he didn't get a huge contract in philly. Let's all drop the subject and focus on our own team and not what EX phillies players say about the team. He's being like Brett Myers when the Phillies let him go. Mustang35
Lets all forget this. Losers always talk and gossip to get the attention of the better team. Like last year when we first acquired Roy Halladay, and Johan Santana said HE'S THE BEST PITCHER IN THE DIVISION. Roy said I'm not getting into any of that. That's what a winner does. I can care less what ex Phillie players say I didn't care what Curt Schilling said when we got rid of Lee for Halladay saying we could keep both, I didn't care what Brett Myers said when we let him go sayin He's gonna stick it to the Phillies, AND I DEFINENTLY DON'T CARE WHAT JAYSON WERTH SAYS BECAUSE DEEP DOWN INSIDE HE WANTED A BIG OFFER FROM THE PHILLIES WHICH HE DID NOT GET! This quote from the article says it all: "A seven-year deal for a player who's past 30 and has never had 100 RBI could be a catastrophe." Smokey
Maybe he should stop thinking about the Phillies an concern himself with the Nats. As I said before in two to three years when the Nats give up on him he will be a traded at the deadline to a team with money. robbyag
Much ado about nothing. The article is about Werth bringing a bit of 'tude' to the Nats' clubhouse. I was surprised at the "borderline" insinuation about how the Philllies play ball, and that Boswell would write such drivel, but in DC I guess you have to do something to get the fans out of their coma. ijj
Wow..first you hacks give us daily updates on McNabb when he left, and now i guess your gonna give us more werth-less daily updates? tdoc

Jayson, Donovan.
KING~out thee~KING
Took the money and ran. He hates the Phils for paying Lee rather than him. Boo hoo. P Even
Bread and circuses. Philly Born- Please, Phillies Fans, don't let this stupid article affect you! The writer is just trying to create a fake storyline for when the Nationals come to town! Watch for it-- what an easy, prepared article.
I'll be cheering Werth's first at bat, just like everyone else in the stands. phillyPA

Way to go Werth. Tell these loser fans off. They are nothing but of morons at the games anyway. Worst fans in baseball. Good luck this year with your team. I hope you beat these losers and make them all go home crying. MRD
Just a bunch of losers Philly is. Always are and always will be! Thats why so many people talk about how bad Philly fans suck. So rude to others when their teams loss. I think its funny when their teams never make it to the big dance and win it. That includes the Eagles. MRD
Werth was a good, and at times very good, player for us. We should respect what he did as a Phillie, and I'm sure we will when he comes back to town. But, he's no superstar, the Nats way overpaid him and, if he's saying he hates now, to try and gain some competitive edge, I kind of respect that. I also think he meant it a bit facetiously. eman- Which Nationals player's girlfriend or wife will he sleep with first?
What did everyone expect him to say? I love the phillies? He's on a new team, he needs to show he's with them yourdaddy!
irrelevant coloradoeagle
I have a lot of sympathy for Werth. The fact is that not every player can be a Phillie and that's a hard thing for players on other teams to hear. Even all that money can make him happy. Sorry, Jason, but it's not the Phillies fault that they're the only team that everyone wants to play for. At least you had a few years playing in the best city to play baseball in the world. Think of all the players that never get a chance to be a Phillie. MikeP
I just dont believe he said it. If he did i would think he did not mean it in a bad way HO HUM
I just dont believe he said it. If he did i would think he did not mean it in a bad way HO HUM
None story-Taken out of context, and now is getting blown out of proportion. This is the media's way of getting a fan base to hate a player whom took more money to leave a rival team. Guess what, this isn't needed... phigglesfan75
Werth babbles like Charlie Sheen... larry and stan

Oh, who cares? After all, he's the one who will be playing to all those empty seats. Susie from Philly
Put a ball in his ear. docphilly
What he's really saying is I hate the Phillies for not being able to throw $126M at me like the awful Washington Senators did, and after all, who can walk away from an eighth of a BILLION dollars? Bobby G- Money doesn't buy happiness in any walk of life.
Werthless. HTownInTheHouse- He's a Nat now, he's allowed to hate the division, and league champion. Unless were playing the Nats he's mister irrelevant, and if we are playing the Nats I certainly hope he's still mister irrelevant. The right thing to say would be "The Phillies gave me a chance when no one else would, and I am grateful for that opportunity to show what I have. If not for them I would not be here now, but I'm a National now am am looking forward to winning here.
See how a bunch a moron fans you people are. You all will be crying when he hits a home runs and beats you. Thats what you'll get for talking trash on your form player. Just a bunch a losers you people are. MRD
Don't worry Jayson, I hate the Phillies to! phillyreader0555
I love the Nationals. They give us 15 wins per year! tmc826
