The Phillies have reached a two-year contract extension with rightfielder Jayson Werth, a source told The Inquirer.

A second source confirmed the deal is for $10 million. Werth will receive $2 million in 2009, plus a $1 million signing bonus, and $7 million in 2010. The Phillies aren't expected to announce the deal until later this week after Werth takes his physical. Werth hit .273 with 24 home runs and 67 RBIs as he played his way into an everyday role in right field. This leaves Ryan Howard and Chad Durbin as the team's only remaining salary arbitration eligible players.

Jim Salisbury writes about the $18 million Howard is seeking in arbitration

The Phillies continue to look at Nomar Garciaparra to help their bench.

That just leaves Durbin and Howard. Durbin shouldn't be a problem, and the battle lines are pretty permanently drawn with Howard.

If I owned the Phil's I'd give him $20 million as a show of gratitude for his past deeds.

Great news about Werth and Madson! Happy to hear that they will both be back in Philly uniforms. So the question remains - "Is Howard worth $18 million?" My opinion is if we don't give him the $$ he wants, someone else will (do we really want to see Howard in a Braves uniform or worse yet - a Mets uniform??). Yes, Howard has his share of strikeouts, but I think he's come thru in the the clutch more times than he's struck out. He is an All-Star Home Run Derby champ, NL Rookie of the Year, NL MVP - and was just edged out this year for that samwe honor. AND - he doesn't create the drama that other big-ticket players do (Hello, Manny!). Give him the $$$ - if signing Howard produces another World Series Championship in that timeframe, it's money well spent!

Ray are you a little slow?-- So its show time with Ryan. Jr says they offered him the raise they felt he deserved outside of that comment I'm just not fond of his approac. He's kind of like the frat boy that everyone hates except his small circle of friends who think he's the greatest. Anyhow It will be interesting I personally think Howardshould settle at 16.5 million be at peace and play his focus on getting out the gate. I think Werth made the right move with the economy being in peril there may be no market for a streaky platoon type with a little pop next yr.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
