Washington claims Rivero; Phillies sign two others

POSTED: Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 2:04 PM

To make room on the 40-man roster for Jimmy Rollins, the Phillies waived infielder Carlos Rivero. He was claimed by the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Rivero, 23, was acquired off waivers by the Phillies last winter. He hit .270 with 16 home runs mostly at double-A Reading with a brief stint at triple-A Lehigh Valley coming at the end of the season.

He was a shortstop in the Cleveland organization before the Phillies moved him to third base. He made 27 errors at third in 2011

In addition, the Phillies invited two more players -- infielder Hector Luna and outfielder Luis Montanez -- to spring training on minor-league deals.

Luna, 31, played at triple A for Boston in 2011 and hit .283 with 14 home runs. He's played in 311 major-league games with four different teams.

Montanez, 30, played in 36 games for the Chicago Cubs in 2011. He hit .321 at triple-A Iowa with 38 extra-base hits.

Solid move Ruben.. drop a 3rd baseman who played well last year and keep the legend John Bowker around. Bowker has to have naked pictures of somebody.

Seriously...I was looking forward to this kid coming up in April to play third when Polanco goes on his first DL stint

Bowker has eight years of professional baseball experience, Rivero has six. Bowker's career average in the minors is over .300 and his career OPS is just under .900. Rivero's career average is .256 and his career OPS is just under .700. Rivero started at short and is playing third, but he's destined for a corner outfield spot, just like Bowker. Fortunately, Rube is aware that Bowker played the game before he arrived in Philadelphia and isn't willing to dismiss the guy just because of 13 miserable at bats.

Faber, 27 errors at third base isn't eactly fielding greatness. You're eight about Bowker.

This kid was a minor league rule 5 "steal" from the Indians organization, and the reason Cody Overbeck got kicked over to Firstbase/DH duty...Chuck LaMar was the one who was really high on him, and I recall the Chair referring to him as having an A-Rod body (gulp)...but he was overmatched in a short stint in AAA...Got to think the Phillies know they're going to go big outside the organization for that position for 2012.

One other reason Cody Overbeck got kicked over to 1b/DH: He can't play 3b

based on the rube's personnel decisions the past 3 years, one can only assume whatever moves he makes are generally wrong--particularly when it comes to his evaluating young players (or older players for that matter) ..it's a shame that this guy has been placed in control of a $170 million budget and that a metropolitan area of 3 million hangs on his every nonsensical move

Amen, Warbiscuit. One more year of leading the majors in wins & I'm going to puke. This guy clearly has no idea what he's doing.

Typical "negadelphia" - always whining about something. Get a life! There are tons of reasons to be positive about what the Phils and RAJ have done. Are you really going to complain about what is done about inexpressive minor leaguers?!? Give me one manager that has done better than RAJ for this team. I didn't think so. Just shut up

Please tell me you're kidding! PLEASE TELL ME! You want only ONE GENERAL MANAGER? I can give you one, Gillick come to mind? Amaro was given the keys to a Luxury car and slowly is turning it into an old economy car.
