Maybe we should restructure the GM position.

There is always a fall guy for the deficiencies of the players. I thought Uncle Chollie was supposed to be a hitting guru. If so, keep him AWAY from Darin Ruf.

I'm happy that Sandberg will be a Phillie, as I feared they would let Gomer keep the coaching job, past his senility. I expect Sandberg to be the de facto real manager of the team, especially if Asche and Pettibone and Gillies come north.

If Ruin Amaro wants to see who is most at fault, he need only look in any mirror.

Sandberg is the heir apparent, no matter what you hear from Amaro, who has been proven to be a certified liar. As I have said on another thread, you can bet the farm that Sandberg has been stroked and guaranteed that he is Manuel's replacement, either in 2013 or 2014, depending on the team's performance by the All Star break next year. Now, if Amaro REALLY believes that he will agree to let Sandberg walk after he promoted him to be 3rd Base Coach next year, then he is indeed a moron and will be hooted out of Philly, just like his buddy (and fellow moron) Ed Wade.

It's one thing for Amaro to send smoke screens on player deals or trades, another on his coaching staff, no? What purpose would it serve Amaro not to lay out the future course of this franchise unless it was to avoid hurting Charlie's feelings? Bottom line is this: if a Boston or Chicago comes calling, he's gone. And if he is gone, after how his players responded to his managing in the minors and how those players injected some life into this dead team, RAJ should be gone, too.

Sandberg may be the next Larussa or the next John Felske. We won't know until he assumes that managers position and I want it HERE. Letting him go as a player set this team back 15 years. I don't want to see history repeat itself.

Here's the deal. ANYTHING Sandberg may be is light years beyond whatever Manuel can contribute. That said, even Amaro can see the worth of securing Sandberg for the future, both as a mentor for the younger players and popular for the people that pay his salary (us). Whether he is the next Felske or Larussa is yet to be proven. The point that he has probably been offered the managerial position is speculative, but probable. That said, Sandberg is going nowhere unless, of course, that Amaro is a complete POS of a General Manager. The jury is still out on that.

we learn in school that good works merit reward and bad works earn you punishment. and then you get out into the real world and find it just ain't so, joe. you can go up and down the phillies lineup, from the very top of management to the bevy of sub-.250 hitters and plus-4.50 pitchers, and just how many of these people will in any way be punished for their horrendous performances this year? the generous manager, who absolutely has ruined this team with his curious philosophy of bringing in older players on the downslides of their careers; the manager, chummy cholly, who has a need so fierce to be loved by his older players it would defy analysis by freud; a first baseman who has gone from best in the world to one of the worst but, like a civil service drone earning far more than his value, cannot be got rid of; a shortstop who... look, i admit i was strongly in favor of giving every-day opportunities to mayberry and brown to see whether they could cut it. now i must say about them: time to go. or at least keep on the bench. anybody who believes this team can pull itself up by its bootstraps with minor modifications has to be considered delusional. a wholesale makeover is in order, top to bottom. and i don't mean by bringing in 36 year old .240 hitters and 5.00 relief pitchers.

How many here know who Church and Hamner are? It's a long time since them...but I remember that Church career as a better righty pitcher with a heavy, dipping fast ball which contributed to the runj that ended in the World Series going to the Yankees. His career was cut short by a batted ball hitting him in the head and he never was the same. Hamner played SS pretty well and hit very well producing rbis with some HR power, and moved to 2nd base late in his career. Fond memories.
On the present situation: yes, it is time to do some major dealing and allowing youth to relieve some of the long time well paid members of the team, and others to go elsewhere...such as Lee, Bastardo, Polly, MM,etc. and infuse the youth needed...as Asche, followed by Gillies, etc. along with Pettibone and the auditioned tyro relievers.
But, RAJ is cornered by the expectations of the populous fan base and management to put a playoff capable team on the field thus delaying the freshening of the 25 for the future.

The changes here suggested will then become probable when the "old" team falters once again by mid-season and then the culling would begin.

This organization is back to being a JOKE. It's time to stop buying tickets, hats and jerseys. They continue to shove Rube-the-Boob and Uncle Doofus down our throats. They fooled us last year - when they pretended that Utley and Howard were OK. They ignored free agents that could help for "useless trash." They let Valdex go to make sure they had room for Michael Martinez. J-Stroll is going to be here to start the 2013 season, with Manuel and his stupid hat and scary-fat belly sitting in the dugout and Rube with his smug look and limited vocabulary trying to figure out why other GMs giggle when he calls. This ship is sinking and no one in the organization seems to be noticing. The bind they have gotten themselves into with the payroll is a real problem. With Utley's knees (the only thing that we can really chalk up to bad luck), Howard's lack of discipline and general downward spiral, Pap sucking, Doc's issues, the fact that we have zero starting-quality OFers, J-Stroll's pop-ups (and .250 average), and the GM's inability to do anything smart, we are looking at a looooooong 2013, 2014 ....
