Ryan & Chase - hang 'em up - you're both done. bigdaddyG
Sadly, It is time to accept the fact that the group that made up the most devastating line-up in Philly history is done. Rollins, Utely, Howard and even Werth are all done. It was fun to watch at its peak. And, these guys brought us a title. Hats off to all of you. Amaro was spot on to stockpile pitching. It is the only thing that will keep this team a contender. Anybody who was watching and listening to the reports about Utley last year should have expected this. They are saving him for the regular season. Unlike last year he is taking BP. He'll get 10-15 games under his belt and start the season. Way better than last year. As far as Howard is concerned, anybody who has ever torn an Achilles or knows an athlete who has knows that it takes a year to be back to where you were. All indications are that he's healing as he should If he's productive by August we should consider ourselves lucky. Right now this is a better team than the one that came North last Spring. A healthy Polanco and Pence in right field are major improvements. Roy Oswalt, as great a career as he's had, was nothing last year. Looks like Worley might be for real. If so, that's way better than the 2011 Oswalt. The starters look fine. The bullpen is deeper than last year even without Contreras. This just in; LAST YEAR'S TEAM WON 102 GAMES including the two weeks when everyone rested and they lost 8 straight. The sky is not falling. Al Wilson- The Marlins and Nats are both a lot better...15-20 games better. The NL East will be very close. There are 3, possibly 4 teams that may be in the hunt until the last week of the season. They are all much younger than the Phillies. How do we know Polanco will be healthy, or that Cliff Lee will not have stomach muscle issues again, or that Doc may or may not have lost some velocity. He was out there for far too many unnecessary innings last year? There are a lot of question marks. Howard and Utley head a list of MANY.
Most devastating lineup in Phillies history? The 1980 Phils might have something to say about that. hunglikeaton
expect Howard by August 2013 (though at that point he night be good for 15 hrs/yr) and expect Utley to be feeling less pain by 2019... warbiscuit
Al Wilson: "Right now this is a better team than the one that came North last Spring."... uh ...no... this team might not even win 85 games..it has no cleanup hitter, and will have about 10 players on roster who are not legitimate major leaguers (Nix, Thome, Pierre, Qualls, Wigginton, Willis, Aumont, Schneider, Martinez, Herndon), and perhaps no one to hit even 20 hrs...a pathetic offense that should rank among worst 4 or 5 in league, a pathetic bench and bullpen, a strategically challenged manager, an a clueless g.m. who is out of money and prospects to do anything even if he had a clue warbiscuit- And the drum beats on.......and on........and on.........ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

I 2nd that the 1980 Phils had a better lineup. I love what this recent team has done but I enjoyed the 80 team more. They had pretty good pitching as well and I would take Super Steve over any current Phillies pitcher. mbutley
I think the Phils offense will be good enough. I think a full year of Pence and Mayberry may change people's minds about the offense. I would have let Rollins go and thrown Galvis out there....or let Polanco go and let Galvis play 3rd. Let's start to get younger now. mbutley
warbiscuit, you're like a bad dream we can't wake up from. 1980
Warbiscuit, your first comment was funny, not so you're second. dmn
@warbiscuit....Pence, Utley, Rollins have 0 zero chance to hit 20 homers this year..you're a clown dude....I can't say I'm not nervous for the season like you, but we do one thing better than any team in baseball that has 0 to do with our lineup wgureck
Comment removed.- Well asked, @main.....

Name a team that's a contender that has no leadoff hitter and no cleanup hitter.
If Howard comes back the middle of next year and shows that he can hit, maybe $7.5m of his annual salary could be recovered by sending him to an AL team where he could DH. I didn't think Utley would make it through last year. Polly was great until he got hurt last year, but we can't expect him to contribute much to the oh-fense. Rollins is likely to have a couple of stints on the DL or to need considerable rest due to chronic hamstring problems. If anything happens to Ruiz, all bets are off. The notion that this team can contend seems a bit fanciful right now. Too bad the Phils didn't sign Mark DeRosa instead of the journeymen they did sign. bobdc
How many ways can you say Toast. Phil Lee
1988 Dodgers are the template for this team, now...
