Name a team that's a contender that has no leadoff hitter and no cleanup hitter.

If Howard comes back the middle of next year and shows that he can hit, maybe $7.5m of his annual salary could be recovered by sending him to an AL team where he could DH. I didn't think Utley would make it through last year. Polly was great until he got hurt last year, but we can't expect him to contribute much to the oh-fense. Rollins is likely to have a couple of stints on the DL or to need considerable rest due to chronic hamstring problems. If anything happens to Ruiz, all bets are off. The notion that this team can contend seems a bit fanciful right now. Too bad the Phils didn't sign Mark DeRosa instead of the journeymen they did sign.

1988 Dodgers are the template for this team, now...

Pitch and play D...and run the bases well..
