Six years is a bit long, but it's the quality of the pitcher, a home grown Phillie that may make it bargain. It's easy for me to say. It's not my money. phineas
It's a lot of money, but I understand the player's union wanted him to go free agent so he could command more money, and set the bar for more players to hold out for larger wages. Makes you think of the jobs outsourced to China for similar tactics. phineas
What good is 3 stud pitchers if you have no 3rd baseman, no left fielder, no center fielder, and possibly no right fielder with our 4th and 5th starters having era's in the 4.00-5.00 range! Guess good old Ruben is expecting us to win 1-0 every three out of five days and lose the other two 6-1. Not bad, we just have to hope for 4 or 5 shutouts a week so we can have a .600 winning percentage all for the low cost of $200,000,00.00 and the lowest batting average in the National League. bob brotzman
I just hope he doesnt go down hill from here, most of them do once they get there big payday. We will see if he is a competitor or just a poser now that he got what he wanted. huntnmike3666
I don't care about the Cy Young, it's the World Series MVP, that's MONEY. escapedcamden4monterey- Go check out my post in the other Hamels article. A lot of very mediocre players have won World Series MVP awards. I'm not saying Hamels is mediocre. I'm saying that you don't have to be great (or even close) to win it. All you have to do is have a great week at the right time.

Sure hope Reuben called Lloyds of London for an insurance policy on Hamels. $150Mil - - - geeez what big chunk of change !! bigdaddyG
Way to go Ruben Amaro !
People thought you would'nt pull the trigger and sign Hamels for big money. Considering the way this season has gone for the Phillies, it was a gutsy move.
Hamels worst season was one game below .500. He has pitched a lot of great games here. Now he is going to have the opportunity to pitch many more.
Steep amount of money but player is entering his prime.
Waiting for a move that will get us a third baseman or a prospect for that position. Would like to see Olt here next year.

I love the Phils, but I think they might regret this in 2-3 years. escaped to CA.
last time i looked the Phillies were 3rd in batting in the national league @ .265.......still problems exist with the mediocre supporting cast...........I always say if improvement is needed where is the coaching.......pence is a less than average fielder - hit him a million fly balls a day.......if howard cant hit low and inside or outside throw him a million a day.......Have never seen a team take so many first pitches - first time around, ok, but they still take in the 9th...........game earlier this yea....phillies sent 37 men to the plate in 9 innings, 34 took the first pitch. Question Samuels at third - has cost the Phils three games already this year with bad decisions. Like Charlie alot, but he, like the clown that coaches the eagles places loyalty higher thant being able to properly train and deveope talent. Question: Are the Phillies hiding an injury to Lee that we do not know about??? ox
This was the right move. Cole is our best pitcher this year and deserves it. He is in his prime. It looks like Lee and Halladay are on the way down. grimm39
escaped to CA., Is that another medical opinion? escapedcamden4monterey
now if/when Rube gets fired in a few years, Phils will at least have one quality player still left in their organization warbiscuit
There isn't a single enlightened comment here. 2smart4philly
When all the hootin' and hollerin' is done, please tell me what exactly has been accomplished here? This team is exactly the same as it was yesterday. There are no new faces in the clubhouse. Same managers, same coaches, same players. Same everything. The status quo has been maintained. How does this make the club better? I'm glad he's staying, but not for the money or years they gave him. $160 million buys a lot on the free agent market. You could buy every player on the Oakland A's for half that.
