After throwing 110 pitches against Arizona on April 24, Vance Worley went searching for Cole Hamels. The ball was coming out of Worley's right hand just fine. But there was extra pain in his elbow.
He remembered Hamels often talking about the same thing last season, when he pitched with a bone chip the size of a Tic Tac in his left elbow.
"What is, exactly, a bone chip?" Worley asked Hamels. "Can you give me some of your symptoms?"
Hamels started listing a few. When he finished, he asked Worley, "Do you have any of them?"
"I have all of them," Worley said.
"You have bone chips," Hamels replied.
Three weeks later, when the pain was too much, two examinations — an ultrasound and MRI — confirmed Hamels' diagnosis of Worley: He has a bone chip. It will likely require offseason surgery.
Other than rest, what's the solution?
"Man up," Worley said. "That's the only thing I can do. I'll just grit and grind out there."
The 24-year-old Worley expects to test his elbow by throwing sometime this week. He's eligible to return from the disabled list May 27.
Worley informed the team of the pain in his elbow around the time of the Arizona start.
"It got to the point where it was affecting the way I could long toss and throw my bullpens," Worley said. "I started cutting everything shorter. I was just going out there on game day and pitching with everything I had."
That turned out quite fine. Worley posted a 3.07 ERA and 45 to 15 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his first seven starts. Now, he must manage the pain as Hamels did a season ago.

as much as you want worley this year, i think he should have the surgury now.you never know how this could affect his mechanics, and have it leave to arm troubles.he is to young to mess with, and just because
cole hamels made it through the year, dosent mean worly will be sucessful with the pain! flyers11

...so there you have it...and know you know why the Phillies aren't backing up the Brinks truck just yet for Cole Hamels...he had elbow surgery last off season... flank steak
Yea he had surgery and the problem is gone. All pitchers face some kind of arm problems at one time or another. Cole could have TJ surgery and still make it worthwhile to pay him for 6 years. he is going to be that good pattymac3
Cant believe Manuel sent Lee out for the 7th. Don w
JRoll should give the money back. rockinrob- Just go get the surgery. Not worth risking further complications and the increased pain just to "soldier on". At this point, does a Vance Worley at 85% really increase the Phillies chances of making the postseason? Hardly. They've got plenty of other problems to worry about. Sam Crow
This is a lost season anyway. He should get the surgery now. Who would have guessed that at almost the end of May that Blanton would have as many wins as Lee and Halliday combined. Lee is the victim of no run support. Even today where he let in 5 runs, the Phillies through 7 gave him zero runs. fischman
Unbelievable that Qualls pitched an inning today without giving up a run! erniebanks14
Making Worley pitch now is malpractice on the team physician's part. orange rhino
If we're out of it by the deadline shut him down; when CH leaves at the end of the year we'll be left with two aging starters and Vance.........not much to build on in the rotation. Northcountry
Clean the elbow and pitch later. johnny eagle
Manuel is a veteran hitting coach, yet Rollins and Victorino have 6 HR's and approx. 15 RBI's. It is the Managers job to put his best players that are performing in the lineup and not what their pay is or what they hit 3 years ago. tulsaphil
Have the surgery and sign Oswalt. drhoffman
I have to agree with drhoffman. This team isn't going up like a rising star, instead they are sailing into uncharted waters with a crew hastily assembled and taken aboard. They needed a crew before the voyage started , but better men than they signed aboard. phineas
