This is not good news for the Phillies, but it could have been worse.  When Chase Utley fouled a ball off of his right foot in the third inning of Friday’s game, he reacted in characteristic fashion, telling no one how badly it hurt. After the game, though, the pain and swelling were enough to warrant disclosure to manager Charlie Manuel.

Utley is not in the lineup tonight (Miguel Cairo is at second), after x-rays showed no fracture, according to Manuel. “He fouled a ball off his foot and it’s swollen up,” the manager said. “He's going to be out today. We'll see how it is tomorrow. Hit it right off his bone, man. If he’d have told me during the game, I might have done something about it…It’s hurting today."

He could use a few days off anyway. Maybe he shouldn't even travel with the team to DC.

it's going to be a couple of days, max--just until the swelling goes down. in the meantime, it sucks to have him out while the rest of the offense is struggling as it is. Zogger, i'd have a little more faith than that. If the bats are cold now, it just means that they'll be hot at the end of the month heading into the playoffs.

Why did he stay in the game? They were already losing by 6 at the end of the third.

Eh, rub some dirt on it, get some much needed rest and by the end of the week you’ll be right as rain…no biggie.

He'll be fine. Rub some dirt on it and get back in there. Typical media over-reaction.....

What a gamer, in almost a bad way. Every time he hurts himself, he keeps trying to play past when he should. He never gets out of the way of a pitch, has led the league in hit-by-pitches three years running I think... Unreal.

The baseball gods have a knack for exposing a team's flaws when it counts the most. The Phils have a terrible bench, and it will probably come back to haunt them sooner or later.

I broke my foot about 15 years ago, trying to kick a soccer ball in the sand at the beach. I did not realize it was broken until a few months later when a small bump formed on top of my foot when it healed. It's still there today.

Relax, "sky is falling pessimists." CU is a stud and will be fine.

When is C. Lee going to tell Charlie something hurts?

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
