Uh, Oh. Martinez Feels A Pop

Mets righthander Pedro Martinez felt a pop in his hamstring last night against the Florida Marlins. Phillies fans aren't upset about that.

Uh, Oh. Martinez Feels A Pop

POSTED: Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 8:26 AM

Pedro Martinez felt a pop in his hamstring last night. Could the Mets' playoff hopes be popping, too?Sitting in his office late this spring in Clearwater, Pat Gillick tried to compare the Phillies to the rest of the National League East. He said he couldn't, but said he considered the East to be a three-horse race, and the winner could be the team that stayed the healthiest.

"Health is a big factor," he said.

So the fact that Mets righthander Pedro Martinez felt a pop in his hamstring after throwing his 57th pitch last night against the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium is more than a little newsworthy.

Pop.

That sounds like a trip to the DL to me, but we'll find out more today. Martinez is headed back to New York for a MRI, but hamstring injuries can be tricky for pitchers. Martinez certainly is likely to miss his next start, which is Tuesday against the Phillies at Shea Stadium. The Mets already have Orlando Hernandez on the DL, so they're already having problems with pitching health.

"We'll see how it plays out," Mets manager Willie Randolph told reporters in Miami. "Hopefully, it's nothing real serious. But any time a pitcher pulls a hamstring, you've got to get it checked out and quiet it down a little bit."

Cole Hamels hopes to stay healthy the entire season, something he hasn't done since 2003. A victory tonight would quiet concerns that the Phillies could get off to another slow start.

Phillies notes, including Rudy Seanez.

3 horse race?? Very disrespectful to the Nationals who beat the Phillies, and are 2-0. Wouldn't surprise me if the Nationals put a whoopin on the Phillies again.

Is Billy "the Rat" Wagner on the DL?

Sure, Loren, and while we're at it, we'll include the fish and make it a 5-horse race. Can someone go delirious from eating too much Ben's Chili Bowl? I think this should humble the Mets and their cocky fans. Injuries can happen to any team and it is only a matter of time till one of our starters gets hurt--let's hope it only has to happen to Eaton.

Why is it that any comment that is more than say 3 lines long has to be routed for approval??? That is ridiculous!

It’s not very disrespectful to the Nats. They have nice lineup and they should be a pain in the neck, but a realistic shot at the division is a little far fetched. A few years from now sure, but not 2008.

Sorry for my redundant comments, but I typed up a nice, say 6 or 7 line comment and it got routed for approval, never to be seen again. But it seems when the comments are short, they come right up. What gives?

The Nats ace is Odalis Perez. They could reach .500 at best. I think I'm going to look into taking my grandma to the Shea Stadium nursing home...she'll have plenty of company.

Without steroids and growth hormone to slow the ravages of age and wear and tear we will be back to all athletes being "done" by the time they're 30-35 yo.....plan accordingly...

Could be. But honestly it does seem to be a length issue. I can be just as dis courteous in a 1 line message as a 6 line one. :)

Oh and I have defended the phils for not being cheap before. But not anymore. Fox Sports is reporting the Phils have the 13th highest payroll. Too big of a market to be that low. more money on bullpen would have been nice.
