Tyler Cloyd to start Tuesday
Tyler Cloyd left enough of an impression to earn another start for the Phillies. He will start Tuesday in Miami, when the Phillies need a fifth starter for the first time in 10 days.
Tyler Cloyd's first impression, a quality start in Arizona he deserved to win, was enough to merit another opportunity as the Phillies' fifth starter.
He will pitch Tuesday in Miami when the Phillies need a fifth starter for the first time in 10 days. The 26-year-old righty was decent in his debut, May 10 at Arizona. He held the Diamondbacks to two runs in 6 1/3 innings. Arizona mustered just two hits.
Cloyd was immediately returned to triple-A Lehigh Valley afterward. He made one start since then and allowed seven runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings against Norfolk. But given the rough patch for prospect Adam Morgan and Carlos Zambrano's lack of readiness, Cloyd is the pick.
The Phillies must make a roster move to add Cloyd and will do that before Tuesday's game. They have options. Mike Adams could require a trip to the disabled list because of his nagging back strain. Adams last pitched May 10 and his DL stint can be backdated to May 11. That would make him eligible for activation Sunday in Washington.
Which injury concerns you more?
Three pitchers in the bullpen — B.J. Rosenberg, Phillippe Aumont and Jeremy Horst — have pitched ineffectively and can be optioned to the minors. The Phillies could release struggling Chad Durbin, but that does not yet appear realistic.
After Cloyd starts Tuesday, attention could turn to Zambrano, the veteran righty signed to a minor-league deal last week. John Lannan was the planned fifth starter. A left knee injury will sideline him until sometime in June. The Phillies are hopeful he can throw to live hitters in batting practice before May ends. That indicates a not-so-soon return.
Zambrano threw 44 pitches Saturday in an extended spring training game. He'll pitch there again this week and then could be sent to a minor-league affiliate.
