Baseball America released its midseason rankings of the league’s top 50 prospects earlier this afternoon and the lone two Phillies to be named came from single-A.

Jarred Cosart and Jonathan Singleton snuck into the tail end of the list as Cosart moved up 27 slots from his preseason ranking to climb to 43rd and Singleton fell to 41st, two spots lower than his preseason ranking.

Cosart, a righthanded pitcher, is in his third year in the Phillies system after being chosen in the 38th round of the 2008 entry draft. The 21-year old is 6-5 with Clearwater this season with 3.15 ERA, 63 strikeouts, and 33 walks in 80 innings. Last year, he made a name for himself as he struck out 77 batters in 71.1 innings as part of a touted pitching staff in low-A Lakewood.

With Ryan Howard blocking his way to the big club, Singleton changed positions this year from first base to left field. He’s hitting .281, with 35 RBIs and six homeruns in 253 at-bats with Clearwater. The 19-year-old is in his third season with the Phillies after being taken in the eighth round of the 2009 draft.

In the magazine’s Preseason Top 100, the Phillies had four selections: Domonic Brown, Cosart, Singleton and Brody Colvin. Obviously, Brown’s status with the big club doesn’t make him eligible for the list, but Colvin’s failure to move up six spots to crack the top 50 is worth noting.

The 20-year old righthander is 1-3 with a 4.16 ERA,  43 strikeouts and 22 walks over 62 2/3 innings at Clearwater. On Wednesday night, Colvin pitched six innings, striking out five and yielding three unearned runs in the team’s 4-3 loss to host Brevard County.

Around the NL East, the Braves had three players in the top 50, the Nationals had two, the Mets had one and the Marlins had none. Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper topped the list: He hit .318  14 home runs and 46 RBIs in 72 games at single-A Hagerstown before being promoted to double-A Harrisburg earlier this week.

Snick, snack, snuck is the conjugation of the verb Gelberized. Gelberized is defined as trying to be cool. This is often achieved by appearing dumber than you are so that you are able to impress the tough guys. Once the province of young boys, the phenomena is ubiquitous. It happens a lot.

Gelb just wishes he could have a glamour photo as overwhelming as David Murphy.

I wonder why they left Brad Lidge off of the list, isn't he in Single-A right now tearing up the league?

doesn't mean much; minor leaguers seem to change a lot from year to year. I'm sure that Bastardo, Stutes and Worley were not on this list in the past, but Drabek and Taylor might have been. The bad thing is that these 2 have not been promoted by now.

Bastardo, Stutes and Worley never made the Top 100 minor leaguers list. Michael Taylor didn't make the Top 100 this year and is still in the minors. The Top 100 prospects by year since 1990 is via the link below.

Lately the recipe for success is arms, arms, arms, and more pitching. Then, hopefully you have a couple guys that can drive in runs consistently. And good defense in the field. Good arms can neutralize a potent AL line up, but with average pitching your team will be shelled. Seems like the Phillies are in on the trend.

This list is simply what the "current" minor league players "may" project to the majors. Reality always sets in when the minor league players simply stall out. Singleton had a terrible begging to the 2011 season and is moving along better. 19 year olds (unless they are Ken Griffey Jr./Dwight Gooden/Felix Hernandez) are few are far between to project to the majors. Watching Dom Brown look helpless in the outfield is one example of putting too much hype into a 22 year old and expecting someone to become the franchise savior. Hitting .248 isn't exactly buring up the league either. Many 19-20 year olds mature and hit their potential, while MOST do not (Joe Savery for example). In the end, this is a list for entertainment purposes. Look for players who handle the "next level" well and demonstrate that for an extended period of time (maybe Dom Brown could have used a full season at AAA). Remember, the minors are simply a developing ground for the big league club.

Watch the futures game on Sunday. It is a game with all of the top minor league prospects before the all-star game in AZ.

Yeah, the Braves are still in 2nd place; they also have a payroll about half of the Phil's...and they're much younger. We spent 2-3 times what the Braves spent on pitching and yet they're right there with us, mostly because a lot of their talent is home grown. This year will be touch and go with the Braves, but the future is definitely on their side.

Cameiros you're full of banana juice. The Braves time will come when they will mull over paying the big bucks for their talent just as the Phils have had to decide on home grown talent such as Rollins and Utley and Howard and Hamels and Madson as well as the guys not home grown but whose careers took off in Philly like Victorino and Werth. Why would you think the Phils don't have home grown talent or have traded home grown talent for guys like Halladay and Oswalt and Lee. The only big bucks free agent we got was Lee for which we lost out on Werth. You sound clowndiferous to me. Get your facts straight guy.

If Dom Brown needs to play every day, as Joe at the shore says, I sure hope he means in the minors. Because Brown is not ready for prime time.

Cosart just looked nasty in his inning in the futures game. 99 on the gun. Valle hit an RBI triple as the other representative from the Phils. Wouldn't mind seeing Valle backing up Ruiz in the near future.

Anyone who thinks Dom isn't ready for "prime time" should take a look at his last 5-10 games. The kid still needs to develop but he's still producing at the big league level. There's nothing for him to prove in the minors he needs to finish his development on the big league roster. Luckily Charlie is in charge.
