Shane Victorino has hit seven homers in his last 19 games.

Life looked pretty grim for the Phillies on July 25.

Charlie Manuel had benched Jimmy Rollins a day earlier at Shea Stadium, the same day the Phillies fell out of first place in the National League East -- the first time they hadn't been in first since May 31. Manuel called a team meeting on the 25th at Citizens Bank Park to clear the air, but the Phillies lost that night to the Braves to fall two games behind the Mets in the standings. The Phillies were 13-21 in their previous 34 games, hitting just 3.91 runs per game with a 4.42 ERA.

But the Phillies are 7-1 in their eight games since, including last night's 5-4 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, to make them the hottest team in baseball. They're back in first place and have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Marlins and a three-game lead over the Mets. They're averaging 6.25 runs per game with a 3.68 ERA in that stretch.

*

Shane Victorino came up huge with a three-run homer in the eighth. Victorino is hitting .367 (29 for 79) with four doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 17 RBIs in 19 games since July 9.

*

Important start for Brett Myers and he delievered. After shutting down a bad Nationals team last week, Myers pitched effectively against a good Cardinals lineup. In his three starts since he returned to the rotation, Myers is 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA. Opponents have hit just .177 against him. He's walked just one batter in the two starts since he walked five, including four consecutive batters in the first inning, against the Mets on July 23.

In the Phillies Notebook: Ryan Howard rocks St. Louis, Tom Gordon's recovery is going well and more.

Good to see Victorino playing well, we need Rollins to follow. Marlins come to town tomorrow. It would be big to win this series and improve on that 2.5 game lead.

Can Brett really be turning into the starter we assumed he was in Spring Training? Can we really have a 1-2-3 punch of Cole, Myers and Moyer all of whom are pitching well? Can our CF really be making us forget Rowland? Who are these guys? Let's go Phillies!!!!

We're still only beating minor league teams or bad bullpens on better teams....when will our offense show up against a quality pitcher, the kind you see in October? We're still winning and losing only by the HR, we won't get far doing that either....

Gordon's recovery is going well? 4 batters and 2 runs before being removed? How is that better? If you mean his arm is still attached and he can pick up a baseball, that's good and better, I suppose, but if anyone thinks he can be counted on to do anything near what he did last Sept.....well, I've got some swampland down here in Florida......

truth, you're the loser. jeff is simply being optomistic (unlike yourself) and asked 3/4 valid questions? what is your justification for calling him a loser? jeff - 1. i hope he continues this trend but to be honest i thought coming in this year that he would be a bust. 2. i think we do. 3. aaron who? 4. the philadelphia phillies i remember. Now we have ppl buying into Myers. I remember earlier in the year when Eaton put together a 3-4 good starts and e veryone was willing to forgive his previous season and began to consider his previous failures a fluke. Myers is simply teasing YOU. Once a headcase always a headcase.

So what if they are winning or losing by the long ball?! This team wins because they play tough on offense every 27 outs. Last I checked, the only complete game against the Phils was against Brandon Webb in May. And, yeah, they have to beat someone like him to win in the playoffs. And, oh, let's see, the Phils won their game against Webb at CBP this year.

okay truth (or is it lies?) why am I a loser? Because our pitching is actually pitching again? Or is it because I don't miss a 10 million CF who is no better then Shane, or perhaps because I actually "Have teh Fever"? (remember that song from the team in the '70's)

If speaking the truth makes me "uncool" so be it. The Phillies did nothing at the deadline and I for am sick of giving these guys a pass. They win a few gms against the Braves and Nat'ls and YOU guys and gals gwt all excited. The Phillies will win the division but I ask you then what? YOU want Myers on the mound game 2 of a playoff series against the Dodgers? They will have a healthy Furcal by then plus Manny plus a healthy Pierre and Russ "clutch" Martin. You ppl are delusional.

They may have won the game that Webb pitched as they did in a Santana game but it's only because they beat the bullpens, not the stud pitchers themselves...yes they were wins, but come playoff time those studs are gonna go complete games against our all or nothing offense and we'll be left with nothing once again......maybe a Divisional T-shirt again, big whoop.

Let's face it.. Even if the Phillies win the World Series and they do it by not losing a game, Truth is going to find something to complain about like they didn't score enough runs or Myers missed a few of his spots and gave up a homer.

Truth - they are more likely to see the wild card team out of the central than the dodgers in round 1. Mark1npt - who cares if they beat the bullpen or the starter?? Those pitchers you mention are aces, studs, Cy Young candidates, because they are tough to beat, even for a good team.. On the bright side, the Phillies stayed close enough in each game to take advantage of the bullpens. That's baseball.

Ya know, if this was a team that made the post season 4 years in a row only to loose in the first round, then I'd be all "Ho, hum, they made the playoffs again and won the division". But for now, I'm happy to just have them win the division 2x in a row and make the playoffs and see what happens. Baseball is a weird sport, anything can happen in the postseason.

I also don't think myers will ever be a 20 game winner. He has never been anything other than inconsistant. Most of his wins or a large amount of them have come from games the phils have scored 5 or more runs. Now he has had impressive games that make you think he's better than his record. Myers pitches fine until something bad happens and he comes unraveled. I'd like to see him and maybe happ get traded for a bonified staff ace. Its something the phils haven't had for quite a while. Hamels is good, but he really hasn't been an ace.

oh, btw, I'll gladly have the Myers who pitched last night start game two of the WS. I'll gladly have Moyer pitch game 3. I don't care if a pitcher went 10-20 during the season as long as the 10 wins were teh last 10 games he pitched

I'm well aware of this team's futility dude. I was there when they won their one World Series in the 700 seats of the Vet Stadium. I remember the frustrating years of making it to the playoffs only to lose to the Dodgers. If they only had one more piece. Things just play out the way they are supposed to. Just because we didn't get a bright shiny star at the trade deadline doesn't mean that this team is unable to win the World Series. Heck, even if they did land Sabathia or Manny Ramirez, the second they go into a slump, guys like you will jump on the forums claiming that it was a bad move. The fact that Sabathia got off to a hot start after switching leagues is a rare thing. Usually takes a few starts to get that sort of performance. So yes, I'm willing to think that Joe Blanton is a good pitcher. And yes, Brett Myers has turned a corner. Will they stay where they are? Only time will tell. So sit back and enjoy the show for what it is because that is all there is. No matter how much you gripe on this forum or no matther how many 'loser' tags you snipe out, it's never going to change the outcome of those Philles games.

How else do you expect to beat a Cy Young candidate besides running up his pitch count and forcing them to turn it over to their bullpen? Also, look up Myers's numbers against the current Dodger lineup. With Manny, the total Dodger lineup bats .256 against him and has an OPS of .782. Pretty ho-hum if you ask me.

Can I just say that WIP's Howard Eskin is usually right (pompously so) but ignores that most Tastekakes still have deadly trans fatty acids in them. When will T-Kake make the change most companies have made? There products taste the best but let's make them healthier. Actually Meyers trip to the minors was to get away from trans fatty acids for a few weeks.

Jim Salisbury gave Chase a lot of credit for running out that double play in the 8th. Chase hit it right at Pujols, who threw it to 2nd. Chase must have really been "hauling butt" to beat the throw back to 1st! Even the commentators couldn't believe he beat it out. If they had gotten him, that would have been the 3rd out of the inning. But since he was safe at 1st....Up came Ryan, who had a base hit. Then Pat, who had a base hit and got Chase home. Then Shane hit his 3 run HR. It could have been a whole different outcome if Chase hadn't hustled! It's all about *small ball*!!! And HUSTLE!!!!

Norma, you are excatly right.....Chase made the following plays possible....Jroll looked terrible, lost last night....like he didn't want to be out there......he did hustle on a ground ball smash to Pujols though and just barely got beat to the bag.....

I think the Phils have stopped the bleeding by winning seven of the last eight. They have a chance to put the division away in the next couple of weeks, something they didn't do in June. Two good starts in a row for Myers, I'm not ready to say he's back but I think that is more than luck.

Chase's base running was superbe. Nice to see him hitting the long ball too. Also Werth made a great defensive play in the 9th that was probably another key to the game (the base hit that went over Howard's head into RF corner).

Speaking of Burrell, it could be worse. Things are so bad for the Mets in left field right now, they are starting fernando tatis in left field. If he starts to fall apart, they might bring up former Ironpig Val Pascucci. He batted .232 in 25 games for Allentown.

The mets are just palin bad! Some of you people, we know who im talking about, thinks the Phils are bad, look at the mets. They have 3 catchers and 2 true outfielders. Beltran and Endy are the only true OF's they have right now, and they mad ZERO moves all season! Tatis has been playing OF for like a month and a half, and doing great at the plate, not so good in the field though. Sure the Mets got Santana, but think how there fans feel right about now. Half the guys on the team at the start of the season needed walkers, and now they need corner OF's badly and did nothing at the deadline. I think the Mets make the Phils look AWESOME ON AND OFF THE FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!
