A few updates from the winter meetings in Las Vegas:

1. The Phillies continue to talk about a potential trade with the Padres and Cubs, although a deal is not imminent. As Jim Salisbury wrote in today's Inquirer, the Phillies likely would send a couple prospects (lefthander J.A. Happ could be one of them) to the Cubs to get Mark DeRosa. DeRosa would provide insurance at second base, if Chase Utley isn't ready to open the season. He also would be a righthanded bat in left field, which would mean Pat Burrell's career with the Phillies would be over. The Cubs would send those prospects to the Padres to help land Jake Peavy. For those wondering why the Phillies just don't send those prospects directly to the Padres to get Peavy ... Peavy doesn't want to play here. He has a very short list of teams where he would accept a trade. I have been told the Phillies are not on that list.

2. A rumored trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, one of which would send Ryan Ludwick to the Phillies for Ryan Madson, apparently is just a rumor. First, the Cardinals don't look at Madson as a closer. "I'm not saying that concept isn't something we thought about or tried. But it's just doesn't seem like it's a part that fits," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, asked about turning another team's set-up man into the Cardinals' closer. Second, the Cardinals would prefer to trade from their surplus of lefthanded-hitting outfielders: Rick Ankiel, Skip Schumaker, Chris Duncan and top prospect Colby Rasmus. If it came down to trading Happ for DeRosa or Madson for Ankiel, Schumaker, Duncan or Rasmus, the Phillies take DeRosa.

3. It sounds like the top three leftfielders on the Phillies' list remain Raul Ibanez, DeRosa and Juan Rivera.

4. Will the Phillies make any moves before the meetings end Thursday? They could sign Charlie Manuel to a contract extension, but things could drag on.

So basically there are no updates from Vegas. Wonder how much the casinos are taking in on the craps tables this week..... Todd, can you PLEASE give us info on how the Philies rate their pitching prospects: Happ, Carlos, Carpenter, Kendrick in terms of place in rotation and when they should make the show

I'm not thrilled with the "couple" of prospects angle, unless (besides Happ) they are just never will be's and roster fillers. Sounds like a steep price for DeRosa. It's not like our minor league system is bursting at the seams with talent. Just saying....

Actually, I've heard "rumors" that the Phils could get Peavy. http://www.comcast.net/articles/sports-mlb/20081209/Cubs.Phils.Peavy/ Now, I'm not saying that they're anything but rumors, but hey, let's dream!

That Cardnials thing is interesting, if for nothing else than to get the highest value out of Madson before both arbitration and then free agency, which Boras will likely insist upon, since he's a huge ^&*$. Fill in your own expletive there, if you like...if I were the Cards, I would not want to give up Ludwick, and if I were the Phils, I wouldn't want any of those other guys for Madson.

acording to ESPN's Stark, this may all be a bunch of hot air. seems that the Padres want a deal to be done within a few weeks, but the Cubs are owner-less and can't make the move without aproval, not to mention they want a lefty bat. Why don't we see if we can do a Jenkins for DeRosa swap straight up. Seems to fill everyoe's needs.

Phily-ies: Please learn to read before posting. All that the link you posted says is what's been on these blogs for the past 12 hours--that the Philies may get involved as a third team to complete the Padres-Cubs deal. Peavey has a no trade clause and hsn't waived it for us, he obviously doesn't want a 2009 WS ring, but wants to be a part of teh Cubs jinx....

Jeff - would be nice...problem is DeRosa actually had hits last year. I don't think that comcast article (actually a fox sports article), actually says anything about the phils getting Peavy. It says they've expressed interest, which to me sounds like a bunch of garbage that could be explained by this 3 team scenario. They Phils have to know Peavy doesn't want to come here.

Exactly B in DC. We're not on his list and he won't come here, but we may be part of the trade. I still am not sold on DeRosa for Happ. I am pretty convinced that happ is our 5th starter this year, unless Carlos is really surprizing or Kendrick's changeup has developed very well during the off season. Think the Padres would take Kendrick instead of Happ???

What the Phillies need is a 300 avg hitter/20 hrs/75 rbis for LF to replace Burrell. Then, go out and get another starter (like Lowe). Do not give up Happ/Donald/Marson - everyone else is possible. Pay the money.....DONE!

Anybody following the GM meetings? How is this for stupidity. The O's just gave away their starting catcher, Ramon Hernandez (who is better than either of our two guys, by the way), for Ryan "disabled list" Freel. I know they (the O's) have a great prospect in Weiters, but comeon, didn't they ask around. We could have sent them Adam Eaton. Never have enough good catchers. It gives you the willies to think about Amaro getting ready to pull the trigger on this DeRosa deal. As I understand it, essentially, the Cubs give up DeRosa for a Cy Young pitcher, and they are hesitating on it. Gillick, please come back. Take the fleece off these rubes.

Jeff - I think the book is out on Kendrick - and if you are more interested in keeping Happ, other team's GMs are just as likely more interested in obtaining him. Kendirck probably doesn't have much of a future. I can't believe people are so hard up for Happ, a guy who basically as of right now will have the opportunity to battle for the number 5 spot in our rotation. Battle for the #5 spot. I could see if he was projecting to be a top 3 starter, but right now he's a guy who isn't even a sure think to make the rotation next year..

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
