After getting benched for showing up late against the Mets, Jimmy Rollins was in the starting lineup for the series opener with the Braves.

Charlie Manuel had the Phillies' clubhouse cleared at about 4 p.m. yesterday at Citizens Bank Park.

He wanted to meet with his underachieving team, which is 13-21 since June 13. That's the third-worst record in baseball in that span. Only the San Diego Padres (9-26) and Washington Nationals (11-23) have been worse.

(Fortunatley for the Phillies, they play the Nationals and Padres 15 times in their remaining 59 games.)

Manuel's timing made sense. The Phillies had dropped out of first place in the National League East on Thursday, the first time they had been out of first place since May 31. Manuel also had benched Jimmy Rollins on Thursday for showing up late to Shea Stadium, which kind of became a big deal. Manuel wouldn't get into too many specifics about the meeting, but it sounds like this wasn't a hell raiser of a talk. He just wanted to get the team to refocus on things as it enters the final two months of the season.

But the Phillies lost last night to the Braves, 8-2, to drop them two games behind the Mets and into a second-place tie with the Florida Marlins.

Once again, the offense came up short.

"I feel like we're definitely going to score some runs," Manuel said. "It's very important that you stay upbeat and stay positive. I know who we've got, and I have a lot of faith in our guys. I know we're much better than how we've been playing, and we're going to do better."

But at what point does we're-going-to-do-better turn into this-is-what-they're-going-to-do? Manuel said he's not there yet. He still has faith, but while he waits the Phillies continue to waste good pitching performances and lose ground in the standings.

Charlie and Gillick/Amaro better get to the "this is what they are going to do" state pretty soon. Maybe Charlie is "not there yet" but we fans certainly are. Change for change sakes is not a smart way to run an organization, but sometimes you have to resort to shaking things up. I don't want to lose Carassco and Marson but if there is a value package out there, we need to roll the dice. The window for this team is only open so long and to not take advantage of it (see Eagles, Philadelphia) would be such a waste. Once the Mets start spending Yankee type money next year, we are in trouble. We barely won the division last year and got smoked in the playoffs, it's not like we are a juggernaut. We need to take advantage now of any opportunity to be great, although I would settle for good after watching this slop for the past month.

JIMMYMACK: Following up from the last thread. Seriuosly though. I just can't understand the thinking. We now have two dead spots on the roster. One in the bullpen with Eaton and one on the bench with Taguchi. Since those two will only be used in cases of extreme emergency, it's like we are playing with a 23 man roster. I understand we are paying both of them, but I would prefer to pay both of them for staying home. I feel it would be well worth it since they would hurt us much less that way. First off they wouldn't be killing us with their poor performance and second we might actually get something out of the guys who would replace them. I think I am far too rational to be a good GM.

bski: no doubt, I agree. I love the bullpen shots on TV, not sure if Eaton is really there or it's a cardbord cutout. Unless we are losing by 10 runs, what's the chance he will ever see the mound again? And Taguchi is a mystery to me, he was so good with the Redbirds but if Charlie isn't going to use him (and Bruntlett has player pretty well in what we thought was going to be his role) then let's use their roster spots for Marson, Carassco or Happ. There might be a Marty Bystrom, Bob Walk or Keith Moreland out there, but Gillick and Co. seem to be stuck on "not ready yet". Well, let's find out. IMHO, either Gillick is just mailing it in at this point or the ownership won't let him pull the trigger on any substantial deals. "What me worry" is not the way to run a baseball team.

JIMMYMACK: That's exactly my point. If you are just flat out not going to use a guy why would you keep him on the roster. Like you said, Eaton is only going to pitch in a blowout one way or the other and Taguchi is only going to pinch hit when Charlie gets tossed and Williams is making the decisions.(Also, pinch hitting is the only way Taguchi will be used since Bruntlett is our new leftfielder.) I would think that almost any of our prospects, even if they are not ready, would give us more than what we are getting from those two........KMG: The problem with Myers is that he is a dead spot we are stuck with. Unless the Phils decide they have finally had enough and bring Happ back up (and how long will it take for that to happen?), Myers will be out there every 5th day. Yikes!

I wonder what made them pull the trigger on Kendrick last year? Aren't Marson, Carassco, Happ or of similar age and experience that Kendrick was last year? Our pitching is certainly as in need of an upgrade as it was last yr plus Ruiz is just in his 2nd or 3rd yr also. Ruiz was much better hitter last yr also. If they don't make the grade they can send them back to the minors for more "seasoning"

jimmymack and bski, I also there there is a waste of a roster spot in Clay Condrey. I don't know how that guy is even on a major league roster!

I was ready to punt this whole season off and argue we should be sellers, not buyers, at the trade deadline after the 4th inning. Glad I didn't write that. Please, please, please follow up this comeback with a better effort than you did after Tuesday night in New York. I've learned my lesson, no more talk about "season-changing" wins. I will give this team one thing; they've had a lot of big comeback wins this year.

bski- I agree with you on Myers being well on the road to being a dead spot (don't ask me why I can't write him off yet, I know it's not logical). If he keeps going I think we have three dead spots. I can accept one dead spot on a roster (see Wes Helms in 2007), not 2-3, maybe more.

Myers wont be a dead spot, I think he will come around and pitch decent. He just didnt have command the other night, he'll get that back in his next start and be ok. Glad they won today, much needed win. Big game tomorrow!!!

John in LA I did the same thing then turned it off in the 4th & back on in the 7th to see that the score was Phils 10/Atlanta 9....I couldn't believe it! First I couldn't believe that Cole got smacked around so badly then I couldn't believe that the Phils rallied to regain the lead. I'll get a bit more excited if they win tomorrow and can sweep the Nationals.

It was quite disappointing to see our "ace" implode like he did....again we beat a bad bullpen and a starting pitcher who has taken 3 years to recover from a decade of steroid use...Tomorrow would be the perfect game for Blanton to show the rest of the NL East what he has and make a statement for us for the rest of the season......I hope it doesn't backfire.......then the Nats, who always seem to play us tough and steal a few games....we need to get on a roll here......the time to turn it on is now boys.......

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
