The Undisputed Ace

Yeah, Cole Hamels is pretty good.Cole Hamels has had moments like this before.

He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning in his Phillies debut May 12, 2006, in Cincinnati. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Houston on Sept. 16, 2006. He struck out 15 in his first complete game in Cincinnati on April 21, 2007, and struck out 13 while throwing eight shutout innings against Washington on Sept. 28, 2007, which put the Phillies in sole possession of first place in the National League East with two games to play.

But tonight Hamels (5-3) picked up his first shutout in a 5-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

"I definitely think it's the best I've pitched so far this year," he said. "That's pretty much all I can remember."

Hamels threw 22 first-pitch strikes. He threw ball three just three times. He got five first-pitch outs. He allowed a single to Omar Infante with one out in the first inning but retired the next 15 batters he faced until Gregor Blanco singled with one out in the sixth. Hamels didn't walk a batter until he walked two in the eighth.

It's the first Phillies shutout since J.D. Durbin shutout the San Diego Padres on July 22 at Petco Park. It's also the first Phillies shutout at Citizens Bank Park since Jon Lieber shutout the New York Mets on Aug. 16, 2006.

Despite Hamels' effort, starting pitching remains this team's biggest concern. So the Phillies need to see something good from Kris Benson in the next couple weeks to believe he has a chance to help him this season. And they need to see it soon.

"We're always looking elsewhere for help," Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He can't be our only option. He's not. But now that he's over his groin and he doesn't have any bicep symptoms anymore, we need to see him progress to think he might be able to help us."

All we need to do now is clone 4 other Cole Hamels' and we'll be in good shape

I think it is the best game he ever pitched. He was in control from start to finish. As he matures he will only get better. The Phillies need to sign him long term soon before he prices himself out of town! 2012 is not as far away as it seems. http://myteamrivals.typepad.com/phightin_phils_phorum

when is vic gonna play center again?

Vic will probably go back to center Saturday night when they finally get a right handed starting opponent in Burnett. Chuck will probably start Jenkins in right instead of Werth in center. On topic- good for Cole's frame of mind that he turned in a gem. He sounded like he wasn't happen with so many solid, unspectacular starts. I think the best thing was that the Braves did everything in their power for 7 innings to avoid changeup counts and he still mowed them down.

He looked great and giving the bullpen the night off was huge.

Hamels is a great young talent, and hopefully will be the next Steve Carleton in this town. One thing he isn't is Steve Carleton in front of a camera and microphone. When he came up, his youthful confidence and candid responses to reporters was refreshing and "cute". Anyone else getting a little tired of it now on the heels of some of his self centered comments that he has either mixed in or let slip..."maybe I'll come back and pitch if we are in the race" (last Aug/Sept), or his "surprised" or "low blow" comment when he was given a 20% raise in spring training, when the Phils could have given him NO RAISE. Hey, Cole, take a page out of the best lefty's playbook, who ever pitched...SHUT UP AND PITCH. You do one of them really really well, and by changing your ways and doing the other, you will avoid saying the wrong thing, and run the risk of this town turning on you (maybe for good reason).

PHILLYBOB-these are the most untimely comments in the history of the Zone. Hamels did what Myers was supposed to do the day before. JIMMYMACK doesn't have to whine about the 'pen for a day b/c of the complete gm and YOU phillybob take a cheap shot. I've always believed that the future of this team are Hamels and Howard at least until 2011 andlast night proved my thesis. WHERES UTLEY? He's what 3/32 in last 7-8 gms?

If you want to attack a player attack Myers or Utley for their performances of late!!!!

Hamels is the Michael Jordan of the team. Brett Myers is the Dennis Rodham of the team. What a clown!

Brett Myers is nooo Dennis Rodman. Dennis Rodman has rings to show for his talent!! Great outing by Cole though, I just wish some of his pitching would rub off on some of the other guys.

Dennis Rodham... is that Hillary's brother?
Posted by davemarsh 08:38 AM, 05/16/2008
Calm down False, we all knew Utley had to cool off sometime. He's still second in Homers, still batting 317, and is 30+ in both RBI's and Runs. All that while going 3 for 32 in the last 7 games says a lot. Myers is another story.

First "Stevie Pippen," now Dennis "Rodham." Is Pat Gillick this team's George Butch? Happy to eat my words on Hamels last night - though I don't disagree with the comments about him being more careful with his words. Bigboy's looking good, too. And yes, Truth, Utley has been pretty bad at the plate, lately. It's relative, though - he's still hitting around .320, right?

How tough it must be for Brett Myers to sit there and watch Cole Hamels throw like he did the night after Brett got lit up... again. With Ryan Howard showing signs of return to form, having Myers pitch just so-so will put the Phils in great shape. Unfortunately, so far he's been less than so-so. And phillybob, all I can say is: lighten up. Cole Hamels just pitched the game of his life (so far), and you're gonna squawk about something comments he made last year? This guy is the future of the team (along with Rollins, Utley, and maybe Howard). Time to treat him like our ace. I saw him on last night's post-game interview, and the kid is very direct and open. Works for me.
