Back to Ground Zero.

The Phillies have been shutout five times this season, including yesterday's 5-0 loss to the A's at McAfee Coliseum. They were shutout just three times last season, and just three times in 2006. Obviously, that's not good. The Phillies have lost seven of their last eight games and 11 of their last 15. They have hit just .181 and scored just 15 runs in their last eight games. They have hit just .229 and scored just 60 runs in their last 15.

“We’re not playing well,” Chase Utley said. “We’re getting some decent starting pitching and we’re not swinging the bats. That will change."

That's about as bold a statement as you'll hear from Utley.

“Our bats are silent,” Charlie Manuel said. “We come, we practice, we play the game. The effort is there. It seems like we can’t get going. We didn’t get it done, and we’ve got to find a way to get it done. Good teams get it done. We need to work on it. We need to be more focused or something. Whatever it is we need to get it because we’re a better hitting team that that.”

Remarkably, the Phillies remain in first place in the National League East.

The Phillies should feel fortunate that none of their rivals have taken advantage of their poor play. Or maybe they should be upset that they've wasted an excellent opportunity to really pull away from the Marlins, Mets and Braves. That could come back to haunt them in September.

If you can't laugh at yourself ...

... one of the things that makes the baseball beat a grind is the travel. Case in point: today I have a 6 a.m. flight from San Francisco to Denver, where I hopefully will make my connection to Dallas-Fort Worth. Should everything go as planned, I should get to my hotel and to the ballpark with some time to spare before the clubhouse opens 3 1/2 hours before the game.

So I set the alarm on my cell phone for 3:45 a.m., which should get me up and to the airport in plenty of time. The alarm goes off, I get up, shower, pack up a few things and take the elevator to the lobby. I get out and ... the hotel bar is packed. I mean, packed. I'm like, "Huh, I didn't think the hotel bar would be open at 4 in the morning." Then it hit me. It's 1 in the morning. My cell phone remained on East Coast time, so my 3:45 a.m. alarm actually woke me up at 12:45 a.m. I had been asleep for only 1 hour, 45 minutes. Now if that's not the dumbest thing you've ever heard, I don't know what is. And in case you're wondering why I didn't just set a wake up call with the hotel, I did. But I also set the cell phone alarm in case I slept through one of them.

I took the walk of shame back to my room and slept for another couple hours.

But I distinctly remember packing up my things in my room and saying, "Man, I can't believe the hotel didn't give me my wake up call."

They did. At 3:45 a.m. Pacific like I had requested.

Enjoy your day.

Zo I'm very disappointed you didnt say hell with it, I'm up, I may as well go get a drink. Great story though. On another note the Phillies are starting to worry me. They will continue to lose until they start actually swinging at the meatballs and looking at the junk.

Todd, you never glanced ta the room alarm clock? That's brutal. But hey, at least you were showered and packed. Speaking of packing up, I have to believe Gordon is hurt or maybe just done. Bottom line is that if he can't be the 8th inning guy he was for a few weeks earlier this season, then he really hurts us. I'm not one for radical moves mid-season, but I'm starting to thinnk it might pay to move Myers to the setup spot and bring somebody up to fill his spot in the rotation. If he does well in relief, then he may enhance his trade value to the point where we can get some serious help at the deadline.

Zo, I hope you get a few Z's on the plane. I agree with Bobby, looks like Gordon needs a shutdown on the 15 day DL. I was re-reading the DN Phillies preseason review and came across this...Last year, Myers gave up 18 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings last year in first 2 starts and 5 homers in 3 games and was 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA when he went to the pen. "His admitted inability to focus on every pitch in every start, combined with an inability to control his weight through a full season, kept Myers from achieving that #1 starter potential the phillies counted on." Sound like this season? Move Myers to pen, bring up Carrasco and let's see what he has.

Ring Lardner or Damon Runyan wouldn't have even gone to bed in the first place with a 3:45 wake-up. Their ghosts were in that hotel bar as you looked in and turned back to bed. Boy, writers sure are soft now. Of course, Lardner and Runyan would have been on an overnight train and nowhere near TSA and Homeland Security.

The Unthinkable: Gordon - released; Taguchi - released; Ruiz - AAA. The Doable: Jaramillo - promoted from AAA: Obtain a right-handed batting 1B/OF to platoon at 1st and in the outfield; Obtain Brian Fuentes - LH reliever. The Possible: Trade Myers and Victorino for pitching and hitting help. Such as to Milwaukee for Suppan, Torres, Hall, and Kapler. Gives you depth in rotation, bullpen, and bench; spell Howard at first while he continues to look silly.

From Jayson Stark's Rumblings: The Carlos Carrasco Watch: Carlos Carrasco is no household name to most fans. But among the scouting community, he's the most-watched pitcher in the entire Phillies system -- a 21-year-old right-handed rocket-launcher the Phillies would have to agonize over seriously before trading. One scout's review: "Why is this guy still in Double-A? He's a big-time arm with quality stuff who could eventually be a top-of-the-rotation guy. I don't see them trading him. I really don't."

Good observation Deb. My feeling is the front office won't bring up guys because it starts the service time clock on arbitration and FA. Other teams take chances on players who can help, we pan for fools gold (Benson). Hopefully Gillick has the stones to think out of the box and make a blockbuster trade for a starter, I'm rooting for a Howard for Oswalt trade. I've seen enough of the new Dave Kingman (Howard) to convince me that it's time to trade him while he has some value.

Zo......Why can't the media travel on the team plane? You could all sit in the back and sign a waiver promising "no questions/interviews".

Plus I'm sure everyone saw that Carrasco was named to the All-Star Futures Game along with Golson, Marson, Donald and Bastardo (he was replaced since he's hurt) I'm always amazed that despite how aggravating Howard's at-bats can be, his HR and RBI stats are pretty decent. Let's hope the Phils get their act together before the Mets come to town!

This offense is so frustrating to watch. One game they will score 10 runs, the next two games they will score 2. At the end of the season, the Phillies will be able to say their offense is fine because they led the league in runs, but they will never win a playoff series if they don't learn how to play small ball. Their pitching isn't great, but it's getting the job done. It's the consistency of the offense that is killing them right now. http://www.santadeservedit.blogspot.com/

Jmack, we had this conversation last year, We need a catcher. Number one priority ASAP. Why ? It's still early in the season to make a smooth transition. Who ? That's Gillicks job. There are plenty of teams that are already out of contention. I'd also fire the scouts that were supposed to be scouting American league pitching. Our guys looked like they didn't have a clue. Time to take off the gloves. You do a bad job, you get fired. Our whole team can't all be in a slump. Fire em ! Hitting coach Milt Thompson, how'd he ever get that job ? He had an inside out swing at the plate. I know thier a good hitting club. But in my opinion they've hit in spite of him...Also they should stay with a buffer between Utley and Howard. Two lefty's back to back doesn't bode well. It just makes an easy choice for oposing managers..

At what point can we all admit Howard's .213 through 80 games is pathetic - especially for a former MVP. On pace to shatter his K record by nearly 20 - 37 percent in the last 10 games. Again, please - Ks matter. Sorry. Put away the Baseball Prospectus. They count. PS: For all you guys that say "he'll get his numbers" - Howard has 34 RBI in 10 games, and 31 in the other 70. Read that again. Bobby Abreu numbers...

I agree with trading Howard but let's face it, the best place for him is with an AL club. That way he can DH and play 1st. So I think we'd get for value for him there. I say trade him to Cleveland for CC and throw in a few others. I also think firing Milt may well be necessary if the team doesn't put up good numbers this weekend. let's be honest, the Rangers and that park are not known for being pitching friendly.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
