The pounding has stopped.

The Phillies finished interleague play yesterday with a 5-1 loss to the Rangers at Rangers Ballpark. The Phillies went 4-11 against the American League: 1-2 against the Blue Jays, 1-2 against the Red Sox, 0-3 against the Angels, 1-2 against the Athletics and 1-2 against the Rangers. We’ve seen some bad baseball the last couple weeks. Fortunately for the Phillies, they won’t play the American League again until they a) make the World Series or b) open their Grapefruit League schedule next March.

The World Series seems eons away at this point.

So what to make of the Phillies after this recent stretch?

Have they been exposed? Or is the American League just that much better than the National League and they should be fine once they return to their NL schedule tomorrow night against the Braves?

I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle. Let’s be honest: the NL is mediocre compared to the AL. Just three NL teams had winning records against the AL in interleague play: the Mets (9-6), the Reds (9-6) and the Braves (8-7). So I think the Phillies should find some normalcy beginning tomorrow night. But there’s no question the Phillies showed some holes: offensively, they’ve been too inconsistent. Until Ryan Howard singled to score Chase Utley in the sixth inning yesterday, the Phillies were about to be shutout for the third time in their last 11 games. That shouldn’t be happening in a lineup that includes Utley, Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell and others. It just shouldn’t.

Kris Benson pitched yesterday for triple-A Lehigh Valley, but acknowledged he’s not 100 percent and won’t be able to throw 100 pitches in a start this season.

Wh-wh-wh-what?

In the Phillies Notebook, the Phillies still aren’t sure what they want to do with Brett Myers, although everybody seems to be indicating they will skip in the rotation Thursday in Atlanta. There’s a chance they could make that decision today, but it’s more likely they announced it before tomorrow night’s game against the Braves at Turner Field.

So Taguchi also has become the 30th man on a 25-man roster. He has struggled at the plate and struggled in the field at times, and Charlie Manuel practically has stopped using him as a result. Manuel acknowledges that Taguchi, who hit well the last three seasons with the Cardinals, needs to play more to play better. But he also acknowledges that he can’t find a place to play him.

That’s not good for Taguchi.

I'm not sure that the AL is that much better, but I do think that it happened to be a random slump that comes for just about any team throughout the year. Everyone is worried, but the team goes through slumps every year, usually in April. Relax, the ship will right itself.

Yes, but the NL nightmare is just beginning.....this team is in trouble...I do not think the AL swing was an abberration. You know it, I know it and the players know it....they can hit all the HRs they want, they'll still be solo shots most of the time and their pitching will almost always give up 1 more run than they score. Not a healthy mix for winning baseball. Only ineptitude by our division has kept us from reality. The AL swing WAS reality.

One player summarized the problems with this team over the weekend the lack of discipine on the bases and judgement at the plate: Jimmy Rollins. He ran through a stop sign at third to get thrown out at the plate and took a called third strike on pitch down the middle in the 9th inning with the game on the line. What's his problem?

The nightmare continues if Myers is allowed to take his normal turn in the rotation again this week......

ITs a slump it happens, at least it happens now and we are still in first. lets hope we bounce back this week as this is the real test. We do not perform against division rivals time to call it for the season. Skip myers and call up a kid from the minor to take his spot to see if it works out.

CG: I agree! I think particularly yesterday you saw guys hitting the ball hard (Howard, Feliz come to mind)and on a couple of hits Milton Bradley made really good catches. However, unfortunately they weren't able to take advantage of runners in scoring position. This too can happen even when the Phils have a "winning" record. I think Myers will not start against Atlanta. My guess is that they'll give Durbin a shot.

Yes, now that the Interleague play is over, the Phils in July will play 19 games against division opponents, 7-home and 12 away. In addition they will play 3 at home with Western division leaders Arizona and 3 at home with the tough St. Louis Cardinals. Can they play .500 against this schedule?

KAREN A: According to everything printed today, it seems like J.A. Happ is going to get a shot. Manuel has said several times that he likes what Durbin is doing on his role and doesn't want to disturb him. Everything I read has the Phils saying Carrasco is just not ready. It looks like the options are: 1) Just skip Myers' turn (but Manuel wants to give Moyer an extra day of rest) 2) Use a bullpen start with Durbin and Madson each throwing a few innings 3) Call up Happ. We'll see what option they choose very soon.

BSKI: Don't forget the Path of Least Resistance (PLR). The easiest path is for the Phillies to skip Myers' turn in the rotation. They can go: Kendrick, Eaton, & Hamels vs. the Braves, and then Moyer on July 4 against the Mets. They would need a 5th starter on July 5th.

An argument can be made that the AL has an advantage in home games with the DH. So having more AL games on the road then at home, could have had an impact. The teams we had to play at home were tops in the AL and had great pitching so the Home advanage of NL rules probably didn't have as much impact as having the DH on the road. Its probably grasping at straws, but Phillies fans are forever hopeful. Something has to be done with Myers though. Please stop the bleeding and do something different. It can't be any worse! Can it?

If J.A. Happ doesn't get the start this Thursday, the nightmare may only be beginning. These are good teams they will be playing. Myers should not have started last weekend.

One of the columnists on Daily News Live said that the schedule for inter-league play put the Phillies at a disadvantage since almost every team they played was heading their divisions. Whereas other teams in the division played teams like the Mariners. Let's hope they can sweep Atlanta again and bring their losing ways to a close.

Let's face it - there are a few holes for the Phils right now, offensively and defensively - but one hole that NEEDS to be filled right away is Myers. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Myers, but right now, he needs help - and if you look at his facial expressions, he knows it to. Myers needs to (once again) be reassigned to the bullpen. I was at Friday nights game at Rangers Stadium and when Myers gave up that Home run on the second pitch of the game - the unravelling had already begun. They were smart to yank Myers in the 3rd - if they haven't the final might not have been 8-7, but MUCH worse!

I think everyone should readily admit that I was the only one that predicted the Myers fiasco BEFORE it happened. He plain and simple is a below avg pitcher. If correctly analyzed he was avg in the 'pen as well. The guy sux! Period. P.G. should get all the blame here.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
