The Sunday Splits

CLEARWATER, Fla. — They will play two on this Sunday afternoon, even with one less hour in the day. It doesn't come at the greatest of times for Rich Dubee, the pitching coach tasked with finding 18 innings from a staff that has a few injuries and isn't stretched out. Thus, minor-league pitchers will see some action.

Here in Clearwater, Cliff Lee will face Detroit's split squad, which brought Miguel Cabrera and no one else. Over in Tampa, Kyle Kendrick has the Yankees. Bench coach Pete Mackanin will manage the brave souls at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

"Everyone's playing," Charlie Manuel quipped Saturday.

He's not far off. The Phillies need extra players to fill out their benches, so nine minor-leaguers were called up for a day. In Clearwater, Jiwan James, Troy Hanzawa, Cody Overbeck and Derrick Mitchell are on the lineup card. Rich Thompson, Edgar Duran, Tug Hulett, Albert Cartwright and Brett Clevlen went to Tampa.
