That's a Relief

Brett Myers needs to pitch like this 10 more times. (CHARLES DHARAPAK / Associated Press)

Whew.

The Phillies badly needed Brett Myers to pitch well last night against the Nationals at Nationals Park. Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday that Myers is "going to have to perform well. We're trying to win our division, so we're going to try to put the best starters out there we can to win. We're not locking ourselves in with anything. We believe he'll stay in the rotation, but we have to keep our options open, and we will." Charlie Manuel said yesterday afternoon that "right now I feel like we've got to give Brett a few more starts to see where he's at."

Myers allowed one unearned run in seven-plus innings in a 2-1 victory over the Nationals.

It's a step in the right direction.

There's no question the Nationals are a bad team. In fact, they have the worst offense in the National League. But Myers did exactly what he is supposed to do against the worst offensive team in the National League: he dominated them and won. The Phillies hope it's something to build on before his next start Sunday against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The Phillies still believe Myers can be the No. 2 starter in their rotation to compliment Cole Hamels. Last night was an important step toward getting there, but he's not in the clear yet.

In the Phillies Notebook: J.A. Happ is in the bulllpen (for the moment), Ron Mahay could be headed to the Phillies, Pedro Feliz is on the DL and Chase Utley's sore right hip looked OK.

We get the question all the time: whatever happened to Julio Mateo? It appears he's been hanging out with the Fratellis, who had a nice little counterfeit operation going in Astoria, Ore.

Thank you acerulli, can we add Incaviglia in that group if we discuss past LFs with no defensive skills at all? Canseco wasn't that good defensively either was he? Well, at least after he took that ball in the noggin he wasn't.

acerulli: I think you mean LF is where you put the guy who can't run, ala Pat, the Bull, etc. Both of whom, byw have/had great arms. I am saying that there was no need to make the SS into an outfielder just to keep him in the organization instead of trading him for a pitcher. it's just too bad they traded him for a lousy pitcher

We really need to make a move if Cole can't go for a little while.

I was thinking the same thing. But they still have an open spot if he goes on the DL. I am guessing a short stay for you guessed it Eaton.

no open spot in rotation, we have a place in the pen. bring up a reliever from AA who deserves a chance

Jeff, I got your guy...Mike Cameron. In 14 seasons he's hit under .250 (hit career average)7 times and hit best BA was .273 in 2005, hardly in the race for a batting title. He's topped out at 30HRs one year and had one year over 100RBI(although not the same year). He's also struck out over 100 times in 10 of 14 seasons. Does this satisfy your question?

You know it is going to be Eaton. They have no one else. Last time they called up Swindle. And that did not go well. Hate to say it but if they don't make a move, it is going to be Eaton.

It's time to see what Carrasco's got. Everyone wants to keep him, let's see what he can do in the majors...make me a believer.

Don't forget, there's Carrasco, J.D. Durbin, Travis Blackley, Fabio Castro, Joe Bisineus, and Kris Benson in the minors right now...It depends on what the Phils want, reliever or starter.
