It's raining and there's no baseball Sunday in South Philadelphia.

The Phillies-Nationals series finale was postponed early Sunday morning. The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader Sept. 20. All tickets for the Aug.14 game will be honored for entry into the first Sept. 20 game, beginning at 1:05 p.m.

Also postponed is the ceremony to unveil the Harry Kalas statue. That will now happen prior to Tuesday's game against Arizona, beginning at 6:40 p.m.

The Phillies will push their rotation back a day, meaning Roy Halladay will have two extra days' of rest with Monday's scheduled off day. The new rotation is as follows:

Tuesday: Halladay vs. RHP Josh Collmenter
Wednesday: Cliff Lee vs. LHP Joe Saunders
Thursday: Vance Worley vs. RHP Ian Kennedy
Friday: Cole Hamels vs. RHP Livan Hernandez
Saturday: Roy Oswalt vs. LHP John Lannan
Sunday: Halladay vs. RHP Chien-Ming Wang

If Hamels's arm is fatigued, this extra day off can only be a good thing for him. Ditto Oswalt with his recurring back issues.

I was supposed to go. I'm glad because the weather's terrible but it would have been nice to see the statue unveiling.

All the starters needed this, especially Doc and Hamels, as much as Doc does n't want it he has not been as good as he normally is lately, which was still better than most. Some of the regulars such as Vic, Utley, Rollins, and Ibanez could certainly benefit as well to have some rest.

What kind of bad luck does Hamels have being opposed by Livan Hernandez again! Looks like another no run support game for Cole.

Actually, Hernandez had been terrible in his previous 8 starts before Friday vs. the Phils. That was a case of the Phillies making a guy look good. Hernandez wasn't 6-11 with a 4.00+ ERA for no reason.

It usually doesn't matter if a guy is good or not. If a pitcher is disciplined enough to keep throwing pitches out of the strike zone no matter the count, you can count on him dominating the Phillies.

Why not play it tomorrow? Both teams have the day off.

I thought adding a fifth starter to the rotation was a great idea for the remainder of the season. Give these guys a little more rest...remember the playoffs will allow less time between games...just sayin'

Phillyfan666...It's always been a five man rotation...do you mean going to six starters?

Anything that gets our top starters extra rest is great. We go as far as Halladay, Lee and Hamels take us with their dominance. They must be healthy and fresh for October... With 28 games in 28 days in September, we can mix some AAA call-ups into the rotation.

The Phillies often seem to have problems against pitchers who throw a lot of slow junk up to the plate. Hopefully, they'll make the necessary adjustments next time around.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
