Spotlight on the Phillies

POSTED: Monday, May 19, 2008, 8:38 AM

Ryan Howard homered in the first inning in a 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays.Flyers, Sixers and Eagles:

Done.

Guess that means it's Phillies, Phillies, Phillies for everybody, unless you're a diehard Soul fan or something. By the way, are there diehard Soul fans? I know two things about the Soul: Jon Bon Jovi and Ron Jaworski. Anyway ... the Phillies lost yesterday to the Toronto Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park, 6-5, to finish their six-game homestand 3-3. They'll need to play better on their seven-game road trip through Washington and Houston.

It looked like the Phillies had something cooking in the sixth inning until the rain and Roy Halladay arrived to kill a rally.

"You have to give him credit," Pat Burrell said about Halladay pitching in relief. "That's their ace and he says, 'I want the ball.' That's impressive."

Just wondering: still necessary to boo Scott Rolen every time he comes to bat? I'm wondering what some fans think Rolen thinks when he hears the boos? I'm guessing it's not guilt or remorse or fear. It's more along the lines of, "Boy, I can't believe these people still keep booing me like this. I haven't played here since 2002. This is pretty funny."

In the Phillies Notebook, is tonight the night that Brett Myers turns around his season? The Phillies hope so. Myers has allowed 24 earned runs over 28 1/3 innings (7.62 ERA) in his last five starts. The Phillies are 1-4 in those starts. Myers is 7-7 with a 4.91 ERA in his career against the Expos/Nationals, who he faces tonight at Nationals Park in DC.

I really don't think we (the good people of Philadelphia) get too upset about Howard's K's. My sense is that most fans figure it comes with the territory. And most figure (although some debate) that an out is an out. The guy's going to make somethin gon the order of 400 outs every year (hitting .270). Who really cares if half of 'em are strikeouts? I think what people get upset about is when the sheer number of outs is too high. That's when the K's look really bad.

I never got a chance ro boo Rolen yesterday as we waited for 1 1/2 hours for the rain to stop and finally the wife and kid just could not stand it and we left. SO next time I see his sorry arse I am also going to boo Snotty Scotty. If he would have went to the Cards and played with no hiccups or distractions I would have laid the blame entirely on the Phils organization. However that is not the case as he wore out his welcome in the Lou, and Rolen once again proved he is a spoiled brat and thinks more highly of himself than others obviously do. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Rolen ya bum.

When they pitch around Utley with the game on the line and runners on base... so they can potentially whiff Howard like they did (successfully BTW) in San Francisco ... the Ks becomes a problem.

Not to rehash the past, but did anyone else feel Rollins was a bit too nonchalant with his play of Luna's groundball Saturday night? This was the play where Ryan dropped the ball on Rollins' throw to first with the Jays scoring a run on the play. The official scorer changed the play to an earned run because Luna would've beaten the play even had Howard held onto the ball. My point, though, is that Rollins was WAY too casual on the play, pumping two-three times before throwing the ball. I love Rollins but this is a perfect example of how he sometimes takes it easy on plays and ends up costing the Phils. This was an everyday, basic groundball to shortstop which Rollins turned into a single. It should have been an error on Rollins and then an error on Howard for dropping the ball.

Listen schmucko just because you don't care for exciting high scoring football games doesn't mean that there aren't many out there that do! I've been a Soul fan since day ONE! season ticket holder for 5 years and the only way I'm leaving is if the team does. I'm a Phillies fan, have been since I was born, but I'd much rather watch a Soul game on TV than a Phillies game. Get your facts straight dude the Soul are the highest ranked team in the entire AFL in terms of attendance and have been for the last 5 years. So there's obviously some fans out there dummy!
