Spotlight on the Phillies

The Flyers, Sixers and Eagles are done, which leaves the city's sports fans to focus on the Phillies.

Spotlight on the Phillies

POSTED: Monday, May 19, 2008, 8:38 AM

Ryan Howard homered in the first inning in a 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays.Flyers, Sixers and Eagles:

Done.

Guess that means it's Phillies, Phillies, Phillies for everybody, unless you're a diehard Soul fan or something. By the way, are there diehard Soul fans? I know two things about the Soul: Jon Bon Jovi and Ron Jaworski. Anyway ... the Phillies lost yesterday to the Toronto Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park, 6-5, to finish their six-game homestand 3-3. They'll need to play better on their seven-game road trip through Washington and Houston.

It looked like the Phillies had something cooking in the sixth inning until the rain and Roy Halladay arrived to kill a rally.

"You have to give him credit," Pat Burrell said about Halladay pitching in relief. "That's their ace and he says, 'I want the ball.' That's impressive."

Just wondering: still necessary to boo Scott Rolen every time he comes to bat? I'm wondering what some fans think Rolen thinks when he hears the boos? I'm guessing it's not guilt or remorse or fear. It's more along the lines of, "Boy, I can't believe these people still keep booing me like this. I haven't played here since 2002. This is pretty funny."

In the Phillies Notebook, is tonight the night that Brett Myers turns around his season? The Phillies hope so. Myers has allowed 24 earned runs over 28 1/3 innings (7.62 ERA) in his last five starts. The Phillies are 1-4 in those starts. Myers is 7-7 with a 4.91 ERA in his career against the Expos/Nationals, who he faces tonight at Nationals Park in DC.

I don't know. Booing is good for the lungs. I've noticed a lot less booing at the games when we have something to cheer about instead. LOL!

If you need a reason to boo, listen to the podcast of Scott Rolen on 950 ESPN with Dan Schwartzman. Rolen comes off as a jerk and does not answer any question that has anything to do with 2002, and leaves after 2+ minutes.

RAS, when he's hitting above .200 you can be smug. Please. Werth has 9.

Truth, you're smarter then me. Figure out what he needs to hit for the rest of the year to end up hitting .270. Please.

Rod Barajas disgusts me. He gave the Jays almost the same production in 2 games that he gave us in 48 games last year. In 23 games and 66 ab's for the Jays, Barajas has 3hr and 10rbi. In 48 games and 122 ab's for us last year he gave us 4hr and 10rbi. What really frosts me is we spent $3 million ($2.5 million for 2007 + a $500,000 buyout for 2008) for no reason whatsoever. Remember, Coste had a very productive 2006 for us. he was rewarded by the Phils demoting him to AAA and bringing in Barajas to be the backup catcher. Why is that exactly? Coste proved he could play at the major league level and he is a heck of a lot cheaper. In the end, the Phils brought Coste up anyway after Barajas gave us nothing for half a year. We certainly could have used that money to address an actual area of need.

Again, just numbers: he's actually striking out more this month (41 percent) than last month (39 percent). And he's hitiing .222 so far for May. Woo hoo!

I'll try to optimistic about Myers in hopes that by some small miracle his season goes on the upswing.

John in LA has proven hismself to be a hatemonger. Its sad. To answer your question--I'm to busy to do the math but I fully believe that Howard will end end batting .275-.285 with 45 HR and 140-160 RBI's. He will be top five in MVP voting and will get 12-13mil in arbitration next spring. John in LA take it to the bank....

Since I made the prediction, Howard is hitting ~ .295 with ~12 rbi and 6 hr. You can't go from .165 to .300 in 10 days.

RAS - it was me who said he wouldn't have ten, and I believe you said "by the weekend" - not the end of the weekend. I also said if he didn't start hitting all together, 10 HR or not wouldn't matter. I'll give him credit for coming around in the past week, but it doesn't yet make up for the first month and a half. Lets hope it continues, we'll see. Losing 2 of 3 to Toronto isn't good though, pitching needs to improve. Its hard to judge a multiple rain delay game though, who know if Kendrick would have pitched well..
