LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Phillies may have found their lefthanded reliever.
A source said the team is getting closer to reaching an agreement with lefthander Dennys Reyes. ESPN Deportes is reporting the contract would be one year with a team option for 2012.
The Phillies had a formal meeting with Oscar Suarez, the agent for Reyes, on Tuesday, but there was no offer made at the time. Talks have progressed today, though.
Reyes had a 3.55 ERA in 59 games (38 innings) for St. Louis in 2010. He had control issues, though, and walked 21 batters while striking out 25. Lefthanded batters hit .307 with a .862 OPS against.
For his career, lefties have hit .238 with a .669 OPS against.
More to come...

All right! Enough already! I'll come out of retirement. I haven't pitched competitively since West Chester semi-pro in 1987, but for the league minimum, I'll take a whack at it. metaldaddy
I hope the bullpen phone isn't able to dial out to Chickie & Pete's. RockStar
@Russ - - - - - If the Phillies are looking to sign a lefty specialist, maybe they should consider signing who can actually get left-handed hitters out! - - - - - - What a novel idea - - - - - - Pedro Feliciano & Brian Fuentes, to name a few, are far better options - - - - - - Heck, I would prefer George Sherrill over Dennys, and that's not saying much. I think Reyes is a good signing. One year is a small sample size for a lefty reliver. Middle relievers tend to be up and down, that's why they aren't starters, set up guys or closers. His career numbers aginst lefties are much better than the .307 last year. Francoeur is in KC, thankfully. He's proven he'll never chagne, low OBP high strikeout guy. chuckm- Didn't we just get rid of Romero because he couldn't find the strike zone or get lefties out on a consistent basis? So we sign a guy who last year couldn't find the strike zone or get lefties out on a consistent basis? What am I missing here?
Well, Russ, here's my armchair GM move for right now: Nothing. Because NOT signing a left-hander who can't get lefties out sounds a whole lot better than signing one. If the best they can do at this point is Reyes, I would stand pat and give Bastardo the shot. At least then if he can't handle it you can try to make a deal during the season. If Reyes is a flop (which stands to be a good chance), you still need a lefty AND you have less room for salary to work with because he's eating a chunk of it up. This looks like a panic move when there is no reason to panic. riles1875
Perpetual Pedro Feliciano is the best option bar none. If you spend money for Quality Starters Then it stands to reason that you spend money for Quality Relievers. The main thing that makes me mad is when a reliever comes in and gives up walks. Quality is the only way to go. To obtain a second tier reliever borders insanity. jpelle36
He looks like Pumpkinhead. His head is larger than Barry Bonds in his steroid days. BobbyD
Amaro, Jr reminds me of John Quinn always crying the blues about money. He has a packed house for every home game and refuses to buy Quality when he lost Quality. I look at the White Sox and Nationals and wonder how they can sign Quality player? When was the last time those 2 teams had back to back sellouts? Amaro, Jr must sit and let the reliever market come down. jpelle36
I can't say I'm surprised about this. It's pretty unfortunate. eastone
I was hoping they would go after Feliciano or Downs, but I guess they wanted to much money. PortCity
2 bad words...control issues WTF? djw26- Francoeur wants g'teed playing time, KC is a nice fit.
I hate Amaro, always have, even when he was a 3rd rate player for the Phillies. XPHAT
