Major League Baseball announces its Louisville Silver Slugger awards at 4 p.m. today.

I'm guessing Chase Utley will win a Silver Slugger at second base because his .915 OPS led the National League. He also led qualifying NL second basemen in average (.292), home runs (33) and RBIs (104). Ryan Howard also has a good shot winning at first base. He led the majors in home runs (48) and RBIs (146), although Albert Pujols (1.114) and Lance Berkman (.986) had a better OPS than Howard (.881).

The Phillies interviewed former Baltimore Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo for a coaching position today. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a job. He has extensive experience as a third base coach.

Update (3:10 p.m.): It's official. The Phillies have hired Perlozzo. In a news release, the Phillies said, "a specific coaching position has yet to be assigned." But Perlozzo, who will handle infield instruction, knows how to be a third-base coach. He held that role in 2008 with the Seattle Mariners. Before that he served as third base coach (1996-2000), bench coach (2001-2005) and manager (2005-07) for the Baltimore Orioles. He also coached third base for Seattle (1993-95), Cincinnati (1990-92) and the New York Mets (1987-89).

“I’ve known Sammy for a long time and I couldn’t be happier to add someone with his experience to our coaching staff,” Charlie Manuel said in a statement.

Truth: What is with you and Chase Utley? How well does a player have to do before you support him? He's hands down the best 2B in baseball. He's improved his fielding and wants to play every game. What is it?

Very nice about Utley. Any word on Adam Eaton?

It's also offical and Chase Utley has won the Silver Slugger. Pujols beat out Howard for 1st base.

Utley is by far the best offensive 2B in the game. Watch out Truth, if he puts together and entire season like his first half this year, or his second half last year he'll be MVP with no problem

Norma-Utley's best chance at hardware in the near future is Silver Slugger, remember they save Gold for top dog's...

Perlozzo is probably a good choice as would be Jim Tracy...lots of experience there.....Terry Collins can be a hothead like Bowa and has undermined the clubhouse before so worry about chemistry there...my big wory is that Steve Smith was the infield coach and was responsible for working with our infielders on defense....we all saw how well that's worked with Howard ending up worse after 3 years than he was when he got here...which coaching candidate can best get the most out of our infield? That's my question.....

I hate to praise Dave the cheeseman on this blog, but he's doing a nice little serries on the players available at each posistion and who the phils may be looking at if they upgrade there. He's done catchers and middle releivers already. The bloggers aren't nearly as informed as here, but Dave's comments aren't too bad (surprizingly) Zo, he's outdoing you in effort during the off season so far. Bettter get it in gear for Spring training

Zo.....I agree with your *guess* that Chase will win another Silver Slugger award. I checked his #'s a couple of weeks ago, and he was far superior to any other 2nd baseman in either league. Hard to believe since he had such a sub-par second half, with his *hip injury*. Wonder why 2nd base is notoriously known as a "non-offensive" position? Now all Chase has to do is win a Gold Glove! As most of us have already stated, "he was robbed this year". Knowing how Chase prides himself in improving his defense over the last few years, I think he'd rather win a Gold Glove than MVP.

juan Rivera has been oft injured the last 2 seasons for a reason...when you come off steroids your body falls apart....we don't need him. Baldelli is a heck of an OF, good stick and when platooned to rest him occasionally will be more than adequate. Plus he can run, steal bases and cover the small LF at the Bank. There is no downside with him, other than trying to force him to play everyday which can be monitored and controlled. Hairston is another solid candidate for LF and should be considered strongly over anyone else. Rivera is at the bottom of ther list right ahead of bringing Jose Canseco back......

EL Zorro
From the previous post to Nckj who asked about Juan Rivera: Juan Rivera was a Yankee prospect and was traded to Montreal with Nick Johnson in the Javier Vazquez deal. He had a good year in 2006 with the Anaheim Angels (.310, 23 HR, 85 RBI), got hurt in 2007 and played only 14 games. Then the Angels got Gary Matthews, Jr. and last year Torii Hunter to go with Vlad Guerrero and Garret Anderson in the OF. So he did not played much last year, but in 256 AB had 12 hr and 45 rbi, which projects to his 2006 power numbers, more or less. He is not a bad option and will be cheap (made only 2 mil last year).

Zorro, from previous post: Zorro, remember, back-up catchers, unlike other posistion players, play on a regular basis. In general they play once a week + day games after night games. Coste may have played too much first half of season. he says himself that he's not cut out to be an everyday player. If Marson is back up he'll catch between 30-50 games and get to learn staff in bull pen. As for Jaramillo, you put him in the package you make up to get that right handed LF we desperately need. Notice that Holliday was traded for minor leaguers mainly. We can put a package together and try to get a good player with 1-2 years left on contract/arbitration. What we need is for Golson to learn how to play the game and not just run fast
