Schneider's injury could complicate things

POSTED: Friday, July 2, 2010, 1:21 PM

PITTSBURGH -- It was mentioned in Friday's game story, but I wanted to expand upon backup-turned-starting catcher Brian Schneider, who was injured in the second inning Thursday.

Schneider came out after a foul tip glanced off his glove, but that wasn't what caused the injury. It just made it worse.

"Pitch earlier, a cutter supposed to be away, it was down and in," Schneider said. "I caught it but then I went into the ground [with my glove]. It was really weird how it just jammed into the ground. The foul tip was the icing on the cake."

When Schneider tried to walk off the injury, he had one thought.

"Why?" Schneider said. "Not another one."

Schneider said he put a guard on the finger and played the third inning. But when he was due to bat in the fourth, he couldn't squeeze a bat. Fill-in manager Pete Mackanin pinch hit for Schneider with Dane Sardinha.

Schneider said he wasn't overly worried about the injury, but he did have his hand wrapped later. Mackanin said the Phillies would know more about the injury Friday and depending on how it felt, more tests could be administered.

Obviously, injuries to catchers can be tricky, especially since the Phillies are already down Carlos Ruiz (who suffered a setback and won't be ready to do a rehab assignment this weekend). With Sardinha the only healthy catcher, if Schneider has to be sidelined for even just a few days, the Phillies might have to make a move.

Paul Hoover, who was injured earlier in June, is healthy now. He didn't play for triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday but was still with the Iron Pigs following the game.

Bringing Hoover to Pittsburgh for insurance could be an interesting task. The Phillies are at 40 on their 40-man roster and Hoover would have to be added to that at the expense of someone else. The only position players on the 40 in the minor leagues are outfielders Quintin Berry and John Mayberry Jr. Infielder Brian Bocock, recently promoted to the 25-man roster, could be designated for assignment to free up a spot.

Stay tuned.

With Ruiz, Polanco, and Utley on the self the Phillies have gotten production from Valdez, Schneider, and Sardinha - even Greg Dobbs dropped in a couple hits last night. Who haven't produced are the 3 -4-5 of Rollins, Howard, and Werth.

victorino, rollins, werth, howard, ibanez. that should equal enough offense to get through until polly, ruiz, utley get back.

wmichael: "You don't give Dom Brown a headstart on his major-league service time (which has future contract/free-agency timing implications." And Phillies fans are concerned about that for what reason? You sound more like David Montgomery than an actual fan. I don't advocate bringing up Brown needlessly, but with Ibanez looking more and more like he is finished and with Brown already scalding the ball at AAA, and with Matthew Rizzotti, who is pounding the ball at AA, most likely to be promoted to Lehigh Valley soon, giving them another power bat there, it is a consideration, and should not be prevented because of Brown's clock starting early.

No way Werth wants to be catcher. The other players sometimes throw catcher's gear on his locker and tell him he has to suit up today . . . as a joke!

None of these roster moves matter, the only way the Phils win is when JRoll scores at least once in a game. Doesn't matter who else is on the field, JRoll crosses the plate, Phils win, easy as that.

Trade Bocock for Cliff Lee and Hoover for Brian McCann. Problems solved.

It was reported that the Phillies will be travelling home from Pittsburgh on an aircraft called The Hindenburg. This team is done for the year and quite possibly for many years to follow..

Half this lineup is AAAA players. With the 3rd highest payroll in the league, how is this possible? Terrible management going on from Ruben.

Matt, how did you get this job? Or better, how did you get that internship? I think I can write gooder than you, maybe not, but aren't there a bajillion unemployed, experienced sports journalists out there? I mean, they have families and mortgage payments and such. If you had school loans, pay them... now. Also, can you write me a letter of recommendation?
