How many games will Cole Hamels win this season?
8 or fewer (He’ll never be completely healthy)
9-10 (He’s headed toward a frustrating year)
11-16 (He’ll get healthy, but it won’t be a great year)
17 or more (He’ll be healthy and have a great year as expected)

The Phillies have placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day DL with a right oblique strain.  C Lou Marson, already in Denver, was officially recalled from triple A.  Marson, 22, was 2 for 4 with a home run in his only major league game last season, and 1 for 20 in spring training this year.

It's never good to lose one of your starters to injury. The good news is that hopefully we get an earlier and extended look of who many believe is our catcher of the future (Marson), instead of a backup like last year (Bruntlett replacing Rollins).

Ruiz's defense will be missed. He stroke has also looked ahorter this season along with a more patient approach overall in the batter's box. Better now than in September I guess...We'll get to see how Marson calls a game and handles the staff though, which will give insight to his development and time table.

Will we find out before 1st pitch if Marson is starting tonight? I'd assume Coste tonight because of Marson's travel, and the rookie tomorrow. Andy - did Marson 'catch and call' particularly well with any specific pitcher this spring? Thanks!

Good question, EricChase. The main reason given for why the Phils wouldn't give Marson a shot last year when Ruiz was really struggling was that Marson didn't know the pitchers and they felt it would be unfair to both him and the pitchers to throw him in there. This year however, he has worked with them in spring training. Marson and the pitchers should be more familiar with each other now.

Ruiz did look like he was riding the hot streak he ended the 08 postseason run with. Would've been interesting to see where that was going. . Can't wait to see Marson behind the plate, though!

The trust Ruiz has with the pitchers, seems unbreakable at this point I'd speculate that's why the Marson may have been shopped to Boston for Buchholz. Ruiz hangs onto his gig (where he isn't asked to hit much) for 2-3 more seasons, until D'Arnaud -a better hitting prospect than Marson - is ready.

Ruiz is supposed to have trust with the pitchers? Why does that idiot Myers keep shaking him off and throwing those meatballs up there? Phils starters are not inspiring confidence. I predict Park and Happ in the rotation by the break. I hope they play Mars some and see what he can do. Coaste is not our catcher of the future and Ruiz is fairly ordinary.

Thats a really intellegent statement mikemike. I forget, who won the world series last year. Once the team hits its stride the mets, braves and marlins will be struggling to keep up. Thats why they play 162 games. Dont count them out after four!!

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
