Carlos Ruiz says he expects to return to action on Friday when he is eligible to be activated from the 15-day disabled list.
On Sunday Ruiz was placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 28 due to lower back inflammation.
Speaking before Sunday night’s game at Citizens Bank Park against the Atlanta Braves, Ruiz said he felt good after taking swings in the batting cage and running before the game. He also caught a bullpen session from Cliff Lee.
“I was running outside and didn’t feel anything,” Ruiz said. “I took a lot of swings in the cage.”
Ruiz will fly to Florida with the team and plans to take batting practice before Monday’s game at Sun Life Stadium against the Marlins. Ruiz then plans to head to extended spring training in Clearwater.
Joe Blanton (right elbow impingement) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday and start that evening’s game.
Ruiz hasn’t played since suffering his back injury April 27 against in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.
“We will send him to Clearwater and get him some at bats in extend spring training and I look forward to him joining us probably at the end of the week in the Atlanta series sometime,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
The Phillies begin a weekend series Friday in Atlanta.
