Roster Is the Same

POSTED: Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 10:39 AM

The Phillies have set their World Series roster, and it's the same as the NLDS and NLCS.

No surprise there. I've been getting e-mails from folks who think the Phillies should replace So Taguchi with Lou Marson, but that wasn't going to happen. First, Marson has just four at-bats in the big leagues. Second, Chris Coste can still DH without Marson on the roster. If Ruiz would get hurt tonight in Game 1, Coste could catch. The Phillies would lose their DH at that point, but the Phillies could manage for one game. And if Ruiz or Coste would be hurt seriously at some point during the series, Marson can be added to the roster later.

And while it might not want to be acknowledged, Taguchi has postseason experience. I'm sure that played a role in Charlie Manuel's decision. Oh, and Manuel is a loyal guy, too. I'm also sure that played a role.

I feel dumb, but I don't understand how we'd lose a DH if Ruiz got hurt and a DH'ing Coste replaced him at catcher. Wouldn't someone else then serve as DH at Ruiz's spot in the order?

Todd, what is your schedule like for the World Series coverage? What do you do to get ready for the big game? What is your pick for the Phillies "Mr. October" will it be Rollins? Burrell? or Howard perhaps? .... Let's Go Phillies World Series 2008 Game 1

If your DH takes the field, the pitcher has to bat in the spot vacated by the previous player at that position. It's a stupid rule, but then again everything about the DH is.

If Coste is the DH and Ruiz gets hurt, then Coste can play catcher, but the pitcher then has to bat. Therefore, you lose the DH in effect.

The World Series, and post-season in general, is about unlikely heroes. Is there anyone 'unlikelier' than So Taguchi at this point? Go get 'em, Phils!!!

Bobby there is one more 'unlikelier' hero. Unfortunatley thats Moyer at this point. He's toast.

Thanks for the explanation. I can't believe the pitcher has to bat if the DH has to play a position.

Truth--- I think Moyer is going to do better in the WS because I think the rest was probably very much needed for him to rework his mechanics. Wouldn't it be something if Taguchi was one of the WS heroes??! GO PHILS!

Stairs for DH! Isn't he a DH prototype?

No surprise, I think Coste will DH tonight and they will take their chances. Truth - the only way Moyer is the hero is if it goes 7, and I don't think it will.

I don't expect much from Utley and Howard tonight against the tough lefty Kazmir. Burrell, Werth, Rollins, and Shane need to have a good PATIENT game like they did against CC. I hate to jump the gun, but tonight really is the night. If the Phils can win this game, it's a done deal. The Phils lefthanded bats will get to Garza and Shields in the subsequent games.

Right. No experience. And if you stick with that logic, David Price never enters a game for the Rays. He closed out the Red Sox and will be the closer for the Rays in the WS, even if Madden doesn't use that word. If experience is your guide, why not DH Stairs against all pitchers? He has 1400 career AB as a DH. Taguchi is a .230 hitter as a PH for his career and a .219 hitter in all post season action. I trust Stairs to make pitchers work, left or right handed. Add Marson to add flexibility. Dump Taguchi. While you're at it, flip Moyer and Blanton. Who do you want going in a possible game 7? Hopefully all this rest has been good for the old man.

I'll rather use Dobbs as a DH. We have too many hackers in the lineup, ematusko. And you have to give Dobbs as many ABs as possible. The Rays have three lefties in the pen and he could be more or less a waste in the late innings. Remember the Milwaukee series? I believe he got two at bats. That’s not good.

I'd love to see Matt Stairs DH against rhp and have Dobbs play 3B. I think this would give the Phils the best lineup again rhp, even though it takes two lefties off the bench. I understand the importance of defense (as errors by Longoria, Bartlett, and Furcal have proven to be very costly in the LCS) but given the Phillies inconsistent offense, I think we need to address this first. It seems the Rays offense has been playing above their heads a bit this postseason, especially Upton, but I'm not counting on this trend stopping. The Phillies will have to score in this series and MUST get contributions from all players, especially their "stars". I'm looking forward to a great series and I can see the Phils winning in six.

Unfortunatly the roster is in and it's the same. So forget about Marson. According to Murphy they are leaning toward Coste against Kasmir. No line ups yet!
