UPDATE (6:01 p.m.): We spoke with Rollins and he said his bruised left foot is still in a considerable amount of pain, but it's feeling better than it did Monday night. At least, Rollins said, he could walk today.

"That's progress," Rollins said.

He had reserve infielder Cody Ransom wheel him from the clubhouse into the trainer's room after the game.

Rollins isn't concerned about the injury keeping him out for long. But hours after the injury, Rollins said he wondered if he had broken the foot.

"It's like, 'Dang, something else?'" Rollins said.

Luckily for the Phillies, it's not that serious.

EARLIER: Shortstop Jimmy Rollins is not in Tuesday's lineup after bruising his left foot during Monday's win over Colorado.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said Rollins will miss at least a few days with the injury.

He fouled a ball off his foot, causing the injury. X-rays were negative Monday.

Rollins will continue to receive treatment and likely is not available to pinch hit Tuesday.

Wilson Valdez is starting at short on Tuesday. More to come...

Let him sit a few days. Its only the DBacks and we have Hamels and Halladay pitching in the series. Unfortunately this might mean that Victorino gets put in the leadoff spot. I will throw down 3-1 odds that in 4 at bats he will see 7 pitches. Any takers?

Cliff Lee could have started at shortstop tonight if RAJ hadn't traded him.

its a bruise. he's been hurt all year. time to suck it up and play. there is no magical switch he can turn on in crunch time if we're still 4.5 games back.

Just put him on 15 day DL so that we can call up another pitcher because Lidge has been to shaky lately. Call up Bastardo,Mathieson, or WOrley. Either let them pitch when Durbin would be used so that you can let Durbin close out games until Amaro can Land a Legit closer. Like, Gregg(Toronto)Downs(Toronto),Capps(Nationals)or Dotel(Pitt). Rollins will be crucial come stretch time so let him rest both injuries because we dont need a flare up of the calf strain or to irritate that contusion. Fouling a fastball off you skin/ankle can cause some bad swelling and Phils should just play it safe with one of their most important run scoring players. Its obvious to me that Rollins is the key to the Phils offense, because ever since Rollins started heating up so did the rest of the PHils. Howard's had a pretty all around year but he wasnt ever able to ignite the offense the way Rollins does.

I'm getting so sick of seeing Wilson Valdez along with Cody Ransom/Gregg Dobbs in the starting infield. Now is the time for the Phillies to get a decent utility man.

This is a dumb question; he hit a foul ball off his foot. You should have called out sick today if this was the only question you could muster. How about what is the chance the Phils will make the playoff by winning the division or the wild card?. I've got a million viable questions and I'm ready for hire. By the way, my answer is that they will win the division...

I think he should have come out of the game right after the at bat and iced it. Staying in only probably made it worse and he was hobbling real bad.

Jimmy is not hitting anyway. Maybe Valdez can bunt his way on or advance the runner(s) with a bunt so he avoids a double play. Platoon Ransom and Dobbs, and put Polanco back at second. Make everybody take a strike and learn from that what the other pitcher is throwing, and also run up his pitch count.

The Phillies need to go all out to win this year.Jroll,Chase, and the team isn`t getting any younger. The Phils core players are reaching the age where injuries become more frequent and time on the DL more numerous. They need to start by bring up this kid from the minors(Dom Brown) and letting them play.I would platoon Brown with Werth and get him major league ready for next year. Also,RAJ needs to find us a closer.Brad isn`t going to get it done.I like Dotel from the Pirates.

It's time to trade for a quality infielder. Rollins seems soft.

A bruise....really?! Hockey players must laugh at baseball players. They get hurt running into each other....PADDED walls.....tripping over bases.....let's see, the latest - Coghlan of the Marlins gets hurt while attempting to smash a shaving-cream pie in the face of Wes Helms! (and why can't this happen to Victorino?!) Maybe J-Roll should hang out with Ian Laperriere to learn what a real man is all about.

In all of the Phillies minor league teams, there is surely someone who deserves a chance to prove himself instead of Valdez who has proven over and over, he isn't the one. Another "Charlieism"

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
