Rollins heads back to disabled list
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday after reinjuring his strained right calf in Friday's game. Wilson Valdez was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace Rollins. Juan Castro is starting at shortstop Saturday night. Rollins missed 30 games with the strained right calf earlier in the season. More to come...
Rollins heads back to disabled list
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
Sometime before Saturday’s game, Charlie Manuel and Ruben Amaro Jr. met with Jimmy Rollins. They explained to their injured shortstop there was no need to play around with this newest calf strain. He was going on the disabled list for the second time in 2010.
And, Manuel said, there wasn’t much protest from Rollins.
It’s still May and the Phillies want Rollins’ right calf healthy come the important time of the season in October.
“I hope it’s not an issue all year,” Manuel said. “He’s one of our main players. We want him. We need him. He’s a big part of what we’re trying to achieve.”
Rollins suffered what Amaro called a Grade 1 strain of his right calf during Friday’s game. He had an MRI done Saturday morning before going on the disabled list. This strain is “much, much milder” than the one that kept Rollins out for 30 games earlier in 2010, Amaro said.
“It's a two-week thing,” Amaro said. “I don't see this going much longer than the DL stint.”
Rollins declined to comment Saturday.
To replace him on the roster, the Phillies recalled Wilson Valdez from triple-A Lehigh Valley just one day after he cleared waivers.
Manuel said Valdez and Juan Castro would share the responsibilities at shortstop while Rollins is out. With that pair, the Phillies were 18-12 without Rollins during his first stint on the disabled list.
“It’s hard to tell who I will use,” Manuel said. “Whoever I think is best on that day. I’m concerned about Castro. He gets hurt. But at the same time, Valdez is a good option.”
Before Saturday’s game, Castro said his right knee, which has been injured twice this season, is 100 percent healthy. Castro, 37, has hit .257 with 11 RBIs in 24 games.
Valdez, 32, hit .231 in 18 games before being designated for assignment. Amaro said the Phillies were “very fortunate” that Valdez cleared waivers.
Rollins is eligible to come off the disabled list on June 6.
bob crogan: victorinio just signed a three year deal at the start of this season, ibanez has an option after this year that the phillies may not pick up.. if the phillies return to the world series they will be able to resign werth.. this team is in good shape for the next 5 years. bleed green forever
I still miss Dickie Thon. mick314
so oswalt isn't an upgrade over kendrick moyer and the ailing happ. we need to get the championship this year with werth gone next year and rollins ibanez and victorino gone the year after Bob Crogan
Is Bowa available? robinlupe
As good as Oswalt is pitching, great e.r.a but terrible record due to lowest-run-support per starter in the league, he's too costly and probably not good enough. I wouldn't put him in game 2 ahead of Cole, and he's probably only marginally better than Bulldog/Happ would be. The team as is, injuries included, is still ten games over .500 and has 6 regulars hitting over .300 (including Howard for all his nay-sayers) and will continue to hit. Let's get healthy and see what is happening at the all star break before getting worried. Bleue
lets just stop this Oswalt talk right now. Cause If we couldn't resign Lee for whatever he was asking for, why would we trade for a guy that has a sore back and a contract that has 30 million left on it??? Philly4fanDoc
I trust the players, I trust Cholly, I trust the front office. Everyone else can shut up. (Except for the commenters who told the stupid people to shut up.) andrewfrombrooklyn
After watching Kendrick tonight again it reminds me how good Oswalt would look in phillies pin stripes and in our rotation Bob Crogan
Wow, a lot of medical profesionals chiming in I see! LOL... DJ
Tooltime sounds like a really fun guy to watch a game with. moosemug
Folks, "cholly" won us the series once and took us there a second time against the Yanks--remember? In the past two years, his record puts him among elites in the sport. So back off and give him some slack. mctator
Love J-Roll, but they should have never picked up his option a year early. Rather, they should have moved him and his $8.5MM per year he's owed, and found another defensive SS at half the price (like the way the Red Sox landed Marco Scutaro for $4MM per year), and saved the $4.5MM for other needs. Like scraping together enough money to extend Werth. I mean, seriously, does anyone think we're better off long-term with an aging Rollins at $8.5MM next year with no Werth, or Scutaro and Werth (with no Rollins). I'd take the latter every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Particularly when you have better leadoff hitters in your lineup already (see Victorino and Polanco). Part of being an elite team is having dynamic personnel folks that make hard decisions. You replace pieces when they start to decline and get value in return before there is no value left. It would be sad to see Jimmy go, but on a team of All-Stars he's the most expendable. Witness the Phils' play without him. But we've got his option for next year already and we're on the hook for $11MM to Ibanez too (not to mention the $8MM we're paying Moyer this year). Boy, that $26MM sure would be handy (net $22MM if we had someone like Scutaro rather than Rollins, net $21MM if we lived with Francisco in LF instead of Ibanez). Seems like some decent scratch to help keep the likes of Werth and Lee in the fold. Now watch Oswalt go to the Mets, Dodgers or another contender while we wonder who's gonna step up game in and game out after Halladay. Maybe Hamels, maybe not. Blanton? Moyer? Kendrick??? Yikes. Here's to building as a big a lead before the All-Star break as possible. And here's to hoping Roy's arm doesn't fall off (or more realistically, go dead on September 30). bm2626
You cannot stop Wilson Valdez, you can only hope to contain him. Go Phillies!!! flyerdup
Had the same exact injury 5years ago. Same thing happened, injured it playing ball, reinjured it after a month layoff I was back in two weeks and it has been fine since. It will heal faster this time around. cuch- We've been winning without Rollins in All Star form since 2008. The 2007 MVP numbers that we all remember was a one time deal.
- Jimmy Rollins is Now officially an old broken man! Look what married life did to him..
I am not worrying about it. Now if werth, utley and say hamels all go on the dl yeah I might worry. other than that see you in the WS. idiots banned4nothing
I did not think Manuel was a good Manager until he won three straight divsions, two penants, and a Word Series. Poor R S and Tooltime are foolish. ameadie
World Series Champs, repeat Pennant winners and there are still punks criticizing the manager and management. What have you ever done? Ole Cholly is a WINNER not a whiner! charladan
CLIFF LEE also says he thinks it is nice to see that all the posters out there are not brain dead and they don't mind speaking out against those whose intellect appears a wee bit challenged... Clee Liff
JRo will be back in two weeks, 3 tops! He's already rested the calf for 4weeks and this was mearly a "tweek" that's scared everyone into beinf super cautious! kbev87
This doesn't bode well for the season. As for Halladay, he's never had to play in October, so I how many innings he goes in May could make a difference in getting to Halloween. His off-season will be very different (hopefully) next year as well. kmon
Cliff Lee says Bobby G must think replacement players just grow on trees...(You can't have a 5 million dollar sub for everybody that gets hurt...besides this is a team game and as great as JRoll is, they did quite well while he was out for five weeks) Clee Liff
@alexsp: and don't leave out self-proclaimed GM bobby g who apparently knows something we don't, that there is a bounty of SSs growing from the SS tree and offering options better juan castro. maybe even better than j-roll. hey, what are the phils waiting for! go get one NOW! josefbreuer
drop dead richard. arappep
That's some in depth research. Matt Gelb should win some kind of award. scars73
tooltime..you are a tool... crohnkiller
Poor Richard: Halladay is averaging 111.8 pitches per game through nine starts. he has led the majors in complete games the last 3 years. are you seriously worried about him getting burnt out? he is among the the leaders in innings every year. and that "boob" has gotten us to 2 straight World Series appearances. settle down man klugs
He wasn't rushed back...He was on the DL 2 weeks longer than they originally thought...He was feeling good, so how do you keep him out when he's healthy? It's not unusual for this type of injury to re-occur, no matter how long he rests it. Hopefully he gets it resolved so that he's healthy for the REAL season that starts after 162 games. ericyshel
wow as soft as westbrook, sad...should of never been put back in the lead off spot..great job cholly, again you prove you have no idea what you are doing tooltime
Why did they rush him back? Those calf injuries take forever to heal. sit him til all star break no matter if he feels better. pointgiven28
Comment removed.
I know this is a bit of a setback, but there is plenty of time for JR to get healthy. As long as he gets back by the 2nd half, the Phils will be fine. Still the best team in the NL by far. Get well Jimmy! fb-omniscient
I hope this is a shorter DL stint than the last one. Rick Wise Guy- Ugh. Well, better to be safe than lose their guaranteed 3rd straight pennant, 'cause they'll need him in September... Brian F.
It's going to be one of those kinds of years for Rollins, and the Phils need an upgrade over Castro, who was never good enough for a team with World Series aspirations to begin with. Bobby G
