Rollins = Wally Pipp?
Andy Martino
Here are the lineups for today’s 1:35 game against San Diego. You will notice that Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth are not starting, and anytime Rollins is out of the lineup for a day game…well, I guess you have to ask why. But as I tweeted this morning, Charlie Manuel said that the slumping Rollins would simply benefit from a day working in the cage, rather than playing an entire game.
“When you’re scuffling, a day off sometimes helps the player,” the manager told me. “He can go in the cage and gets his swing back. Sometimes a day off can be the best thing for you, and Jimmy doesn’t take many.”
Later, Manuel noted that if Eric Bruntlett seized the opportunity and had a big day Rollins may have played his last game for the Phillies. “Wally Pipp, he made Lou Gehrig famous, didn’t he?” Manuel said, smiling.

We need something from Park today. Today's game is being played at sea level. It is warm. It is dry. He needs his curveball to be effective? Fine. He should have it today. Also, since both Madson and Lidge have pitched on Friday and Saturday, and thrown a lot of pitches in the process, I'm guessing neither one of them will be available today, so we need Park to step up. Then the rest of the starters can follow his lead after today. bski
Charlie's a little desparate. Should release Cairo who is quickly turning into the So Taguchi of 09, the seldom used 25th man from last season and call up Donald or Mayberry to give the team a boost. At least with one of those two you have some speed off the bench to pinch run, righthanded pop and youthful enthusiasm. Cairo is worthless on all those counts. Florida's winning with youth. Their starting pitching staff is no older than 26. Dull
Saw the game last night. They're coming around, but everything hasn't clicked yet. A month from now we'll be in first place. This is a good team. And the fans are the best. The ovation for Lidge was classy and showed that Philly fans are real baseball fans. CenterCityPhan
Get off of Rollins back. Are you going to make a ridiculous implication like this every time he sits for a day? Get over it. JLH
CenterCityPhan.......Yeah, we just can't get all phases in sync, but I expect we will. When Lidge lost the save last night I immediately said to my son that the fans would give him an ovation when he came off the field because I would have were I there. After he gave up the 3-run homer I wasn't too sure, but I'm glad they did. Lidge blowing a save isn't a big deal. However, Lidge not having command of his pitches is. Lack of command is the plague of the pitching staff to up this point. No command=getting behind hitters=throwing fastballs in fastball counts=hitters smashing those fastballs and depositing many of them beyond the limits of the playing field........Nice to see us pull out a win today. Also glad that Ibanez was able to make up for his earlier error. There are good things happening. Howard's defense is impressive, and his stroke isn't too bad either. We keep battling and grinding out some wins, but until the pitchers straighten out we will keep spinning our wheels. bski
Sometime players get a bit too secure in their standing with a team. I'd keep giving him days off till he comes around. We need some productivity from the the first two hitters now, not next month. Jimmy is late and under everything, blame it on the WBC, or what ever, but as a lead off hitter he is killing us.. Wally 24
Thought Park looked a lot better today. Good movement on his pitches and with a little better support from the defense and a call or two from the Ump he might have gotten the win. We seem to have no luck at all when it comes to catching breaks so far this season. I'm not making excuses but things just have not fallen our way to this point. With respect to Howard. There has be a couple of games where he was showing the frustration of dealing with 94MPH fastballs and 78MPH junk but has come back the next game and not over swung and hit singles, doubles, and even a triple. Exactly what he needs to do. Considering Lidges streak covers 3 seasons its not surprising he finally got taken to the whipping shed. Maybe now he can relax and concentrate on attacking the hitters. Just another classic Phillies April. Nothing to be concerned about, honestly. Good outing from Park, Rollins will come around. Frank Lloyd Wrong
Other than the uniform number is there a correlation between Bruntlett and Gehrig I missed? Wally 24
ATTN: Everyone Sarcasm doesn't translate on the internet, but please use common sense and/or context clues. Thanks. Either/Or- Ibañez’s offense has really impressed me. The guy is a professional hitter. Now, his defense is a little shaky sometimes. That Gonzalez shot Ibañez misplayed was not a triple. No way. It was a catchable ball. He make the decision to be aggressive instead of letting the ball drop in front of him, which would have kept the double play in order… but when he got to the ball he kind of circled it. He's supposed to get in front of it, like Gerud did to Howard’s fly ball in the ninth. Then, Giles hit a sharp grounder to Utley that would have been a DP. Instead Gonzalez scored from third. Good thing Ibañez came through big time with that game winning shot. EL Zorro
Pipp analogy very trite. Surprised at you Andy. Call it what it is, a day off. YOU may need one if you write further banalities. Murph wins today. mick314
Lightin up Either/or. We enjoy ourselves and one another. I suggest you confer with the Great DrHeller or EL Zorro (but definitely NOT PHILLY10) before further posts. Thanks 2U2. mick314- Actually, Wally Pipp was not a bad ballplayer. In 15 seasons, he had a career .282 avg. with almost 1,000 RBI (998), a few seasons with a .300 BA and more than 100 RBI, mainly during the deadball era. He led the league in homers in 1916 and 1917 (12 and 9, respectively) and in triples in 1924 (19). He became the first Yankee to win a HR tittle. He also had a nice .992 FP. Then Lou Gerigh replaced him in 1925 after he complained of a headache. At the end Gerigh became his biggest headache. EL Zorro
- Thank you Mick for making me spill my coffee all over the keyboard again. That's 10 times... and counting. EL Zorro
