Rollins = Wally Pipp?

Here are the lineups for today’s 1:35 game against San Diego. You will notice that Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth are not starting, and anytime Rollins is out of the lineup for a day game…well, I guess you have to ask why. But as I tweeted this morning, Charlie Manuel said that the slumping Rollins would simply benefit from a day working in the cage, rather than playing an entire game.

“When you’re scuffling, a day off sometimes helps the player,” the manager told me. “He can go in the cage and gets his swing back. Sometimes a day off can be the best thing for you, and Jimmy doesn’t take many.”
Later, Manuel noted that if Eric Bruntlett seized the opportunity and had a big day Rollins may have played his last game for the Phillies. “Wally Pipp, he made Lou Gehrig famous, didn’t he?” Manuel said, smiling.
