The Phillies finally placed Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle.

The move seemed obvious.

In fact, it probably should have been made earlier.

Rollins said he felt his ankle has improved a little every day, but it clearly hasn't improved enough. And at some point the Phillies simply had to allow Rollins' ankle to heal, rather than have him pinch-hit and strain it for no reason. Rollins will be eligible to be activated May 5 in Arizona. Double-A Reading infielder Brad Harman has been promoted to take Rollins' place.

This is the first time Rollins, who injured the ankle April 8, has been on the DL in his eight-year career.

The Phillies also placed outfielder Chris Snelling on the DL with left knee inflammation. They recalled triple-A Lehigh Valley outfielder T.J. Bohn to take his place.

Harman, 22, was hitting .222 (12 for 54) with three doubles, one home run and three RBIs in 16 games for Reading. He hit .281 with 13 home runs and 62 RBI in 122 games last season for single-A Clearwater. Bohn was hitting .190 (8 for 42) with one double in 13 games for Lehigh Valley. Bohn previously played in the major leagues with Seattle in 2006. He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies last September.

Harman will wear #18 and Bohn #12.

Why did they wait so long? And how does it go from day-to-day possibly playing yesterday to May 5?

Guess I was right about Jimmy all along and it not being just a little ol' sprained ankle......I'm sure we're not getting the whole truth on that MRI yet either......barring any catastrophe to the Mets top 3 pitchers or the Braves rotation, we can count on 3rd place without Jimmy and his explosiveness in his game...trust me , it won't be there at all this year.

We'd better get used to a very pedestrain Jimmy.....limited range, no stolen bases, no triples, etc......it could be that way for a long, long time.

It's troublesome that this organization is so secretive and protective of such matters. The guy is limping 2 wks after a "sprain". He doesn't move from his spot in the dugout during the game, who did they think they were fooling?

Gross incompetence. Jimmy made occasional appearances for two weeks and then winds up on the disabled list. Scott Sheridan, Michael Ciccotti, Pat Gillick, Ruben Amaro, Jr., Mike Arbuckle all grossly incompetent. This is not okay, it is the difference between competing and not competing.

Yeah im not to happy about the whole thing! Someone handled this very, very poorly. J-roll may have played a part in this. He may have been leading everybody to believe it wasnt serious, dont forget, he has never really been injured, so he was probably fooling himself as well. If that was the case, somebody should have stood up to the MVP and told him no, you will sit for 15 days, and go from there. It is very possible! It could have been anybodys fault!

Clinton NJ, they have an MRI. They should have had one the next morning. What is it with YOU people. YOU think it's Jimmy's fault? In any organization if you sprain a ligament you get an MRI. Get real Clinton! Look at the organization. It's the Phillies. As we know players have no say when it comes to such matters its in their contracts.

Never fails.. Whenever the team starts to falter, a pitcher or another player ends up on the DL. As if this excuses or is a reason for losing. Sounds like spin to me. If they were winning JRoll would still be active !!

These are the best they could bring up??? WTF!! What about Golston?? They already have a bunch of guys hitting around .200, why get more of the same???

Truth, they didnt get the MRI right away, and you never know! Obviously he was convincing someone he wasnt that bad off. He was still pinch hitting. Im not saying J-roll did it on purpose, probably just thought it wasnt that bad and kept thinking he would be better in a few days! Athletes do that! The Phils probably thought the same, Its not like they were forcing him to play at SS on a sprained ankle, and made it worse. And your take on Howard was PATHETIC as always. YOUR A JOKE TRUTH!

Old man Clint you must have taken your reading gleaases off. To refresh the team can order the player to get an MRI. It's incompetence if a player is sitting on the bench due to a ligament sprain that they would not have an MRI done the next morning. Get a clue old timer. Stop blaming everyone except this organization, they are the ones with 10k loses they are not perfect.

How many times has this happened with the Phils since the Wade era? Are other teams as inaccurate/dishonest about player injuries? This smells a lot like Bret Myers' 60-day wait on the 15-day DL. Next time the Phils feed us some trash about Kris Benson's anticipated return date, can you also list the dozen previous anticipated return dates we've been fed? Maybe someone at one of the dailies could take a day or two off from running the same Notes columns and High and Inside stuff that's pulled from the wire and analyze the Phils' medical practices against other MLB teams.

I don't know if its anybody's fault about Jimmy, and its not necessarily incompetence. Maybe they just thought he would be ok after some rest and now they decided it will be longer. Its not like they trotted him out there game after game and made it worse. What's the difference if he went on the DL the day after it happened or today? If its still bothering him, its still bothering him. And I agree its a little early to boo Howard, just like its WAY EARLY to start MVP chants for Utley. Its only April 21st. But if Howard continues to struggle, he will start getting the Pat Burrell treatment, which was ugly for a while when he was really struggling.

Howard gets his $10M and disappears. How about that?!?! There is NO unity or championship leadership in the clubhouse right now. Rollins is a nice guy, but he is not an "imposing leader" who will get into the face of player(s) who is/are slacking off. Rowand was that last year. He got into several players faces when they "slacked off". Burrell only cares about his #'s b/c he knows he wont be hear next year. Howard is simply not a leader(yet), and Chase is much like Rollins. Who is left to be that "competitive leader"? I am not saying Rowand was worth the $$$ he got from SF, but the Phils management messed with the chemistry of the team and now its showing. Sorry guys, unless a "leader" emerges, I have the Phils pegged for 3rd place this year simply due to lack of on field desire.

Davegas, sorry? A@#holes? It's a business. He's killing them at this point. Watch the actual games, don't wait for the end of the year tally. If he plays the ways he should, they have 2 more wins now, and they're in first. Adds up over a season. He hit sub .220 for 4 out of 6 months last season. Look it up. He's a former MVP who wants to get paid 20 mil plus.

I'm not sure about that leadership issue. Utley appears to be taking a more active role this year. He often approaches the mound in tight spots or after the pitcher gives up a walk/hit and has something to say. We don't know what goes on in the clubhouse.

If Bret Myers pitches the way he's supposed to they have 2 more wins. If any Philly player gets a hit at the right time time they have 3-4 more victories. It's all Howards fault b/c he is getting a little bread, huh. Just b/c you or I don't have the natural gifts to be professional atheletes we shouldn't jeer those that get paid vast sums of money b/c they do. To single on person out is to be a loser. I hope the "BIG MAN" never gives the little man Zo' an interview again.

Truth, you are a hilarious fraud. You say we shouldn't jeer athletes just because of their paychecks (or because you're defending your hero, Ryan), but constantly call the team "classless" and criticize them. You are the most negative person on this blog. Is that much different than jeering?

After bashing Howard for his fielding, I have to admit he made some nice plays last night. He actually made contact a few times at bat, I guess that's encouraging. Taguchi's fielding is an adventure, he was aided by some generous scoring on that double, should have been E7. Bruntlett is just plain terrible, his nice play at the end notwithstanding. Mutts fans were seriously obnoxious at the game, hope they enjoyed the ride home. The Phil's medical staff is a joke, maybe if there is universal health care some day, they will find a competant doctor and trainer, cause these guys ain't cutting it.

Truth (or is it really False?), you mad because Zo points out the obvious, that Howard is struggling? "To single on(e) person out is to be a loser", your words, so I guess if Howard follows your advice that makes him a loser also. Birds of a feather....

Hey, I really like Ryan and I'm sure when it's all said and done that he will have good numbers. But he also wants to be paid like a superstar...realistically he wants to be one of the top five paid players in all of MLB. Well, for that kind of money you should produce on a much more consistent basis. This isn't the same as Pedro Feliz, Geoff Jenkins, and Carlos Ruiz slumping. Yes, they are hurting the team as well, but then again, they were never supposed to be the force that Ryan Howard is supposed to be...is paid to be.

Definite credit for Howard's glove last night. And Buntlett's. The point is: Howard is the former MVP. Myers ain't. Never will be. Howard is the face of MLB - what other player right now has more endorsements? Subway, Adidas, that lame video game. So he's held to a higher standard. He also wants to be paid like the highest player in the game. See where this is going, Truth? You're a bright guy. "Apples and oranges," right? Like the doctor said, you need to stick to the meds...

TRUTH = LOSER I hate when people tell other people NOT to boo. If you want to to sit and watch a game quietly without any emotion, go to St. Louis. If you are want to root for a Philadelphia team. Feel free to boo a guy for striking out three times, and don't be afraid to bring him back for a curtain call when he hits a walk off HR. That's what we do here. It is the player's job to get his job done, and we give feedback accordingly.

of course you point out howard. former mvp's get pointed to when their teams do bad; they were voted the most valuable player on their team and given huge contracts because they matter that much. so when their team is losing and they're batting below the mendoza line they get a lot of the blame. 2nd worst batting average in the NL of any player who has started every game this season. he's the #4 batter, not the #8.

and for the person that points to leadership: when was the last time you were in the clubhouse? how many times have you been their in the locker room before they take the field? ever been on the field for batting practice? ever been on the team bus or plane? enough with the leadership talk, you dont know what youre talking about. these are grown men, and they need leadership? they were all team captains and leaders in college and high school. you're telling me a professional baseball player who is 28 years old needs aaron rowand? what a great guy rowand is, left a town that looked at him like he was a super hero to go play for a team that finished 15th in the NL last year because they gave him more money.

Howard needs to pick it up. There is a book on every hitter in baseball, Howard needs to make adjustments and begin to use the entire field. Defensively, Ryan has to make the "routine" play. Field and throw to 2nd. 2 poor plays in the field hurt the Phils on Friday night.

The eversion sprain Jimmy suffered is much more dangerous and fraught with potential long term problems than the simple inversion sprain that most of us suffer. There is much more potential for cartilage damage in the ankle joint and more long term problems. We can only hope that isn't the case here, but I have my doubts.
