The Phillies finally placed Jimmy Rollins on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle.

The move seemed obvious.

In fact, it probably should have been made earlier.

Rollins said he felt his ankle has improved a little every day, but it clearly hasn't improved enough. And at some point the Phillies simply had to allow Rollins' ankle to heal, rather than have him pinch-hit and strain it for no reason. Rollins will be eligible to be activated May 5 in Arizona. Double-A Reading infielder Brad Harman has been promoted to take Rollins' place.

This is the first time Rollins, who injured the ankle April 8, has been on the DL in his eight-year career.

The Phillies also placed outfielder Chris Snelling on the DL with left knee inflammation. They recalled triple-A Lehigh Valley outfielder T.J. Bohn to take his place.

Harman, 22, was hitting .222 (12 for 54) with three doubles, one home run and three RBIs in 16 games for Reading. He hit .281 with 13 home runs and 62 RBI in 122 games last season for single-A Clearwater. Bohn was hitting .190 (8 for 42) with one double in 13 games for Lehigh Valley. Bohn previously played in the major leagues with Seattle in 2006. He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies last September.

Harman will wear #18 and Bohn #12.

Why did they wait so long? And how does it go from day-to-day possibly playing yesterday to May 5?

Guess I was right about Jimmy all along and it not being just a little ol' sprained ankle......I'm sure we're not getting the whole truth on that MRI yet either......barring any catastrophe to the Mets top 3 pitchers or the Braves rotation, we can count on 3rd place without Jimmy and his explosiveness in his game...trust me , it won't be there at all this year.

We'd better get used to a very pedestrain Jimmy.....limited range, no stolen bases, no triples, etc......it could be that way for a long, long time.

It's troublesome that this organization is so secretive and protective of such matters. The guy is limping 2 wks after a "sprain". He doesn't move from his spot in the dugout during the game, who did they think they were fooling?

Gross incompetence. Jimmy made occasional appearances for two weeks and then winds up on the disabled list. Scott Sheridan, Michael Ciccotti, Pat Gillick, Ruben Amaro, Jr., Mike Arbuckle all grossly incompetent. This is not okay, it is the difference between competing and not competing.

Yeah im not to happy about the whole thing! Someone handled this very, very poorly. J-roll may have played a part in this. He may have been leading everybody to believe it wasnt serious, dont forget, he has never really been injured, so he was probably fooling himself as well. If that was the case, somebody should have stood up to the MVP and told him no, you will sit for 15 days, and go from there. It is very possible! It could have been anybodys fault!

Clinton NJ, they have an MRI. They should have had one the next morning. What is it with YOU people. YOU think it's Jimmy's fault? In any organization if you sprain a ligament you get an MRI. Get real Clinton! Look at the organization. It's the Phillies. As we know players have no say when it comes to such matters its in their contracts.

Never fails.. Whenever the team starts to falter, a pitcher or another player ends up on the DL. As if this excuses or is a reason for losing. Sounds like spin to me. If they were winning JRoll would still be active !!

These are the best they could bring up??? WTF!! What about Golston?? They already have a bunch of guys hitting around .200, why get more of the same???

Truth, they didnt get the MRI right away, and you never know! Obviously he was convincing someone he wasnt that bad off. He was still pinch hitting. Im not saying J-roll did it on purpose, probably just thought it wasnt that bad and kept thinking he would be better in a few days! Athletes do that! The Phils probably thought the same, Its not like they were forcing him to play at SS on a sprained ankle, and made it worse. And your take on Howard was PATHETIC as always. YOUR A JOKE TRUTH!

Old man Clint you must have taken your reading gleaases off. To refresh the team can order the player to get an MRI. It's incompetence if a player is sitting on the bench due to a ligament sprain that they would not have an MRI done the next morning. Get a clue old timer. Stop blaming everyone except this organization, they are the ones with 10k loses they are not perfect.

How many times has this happened with the Phils since the Wade era? Are other teams as inaccurate/dishonest about player injuries? This smells a lot like Bret Myers' 60-day wait on the 15-day DL. Next time the Phils feed us some trash about Kris Benson's anticipated return date, can you also list the dozen previous anticipated return dates we've been fed? Maybe someone at one of the dailies could take a day or two off from running the same Notes columns and High and Inside stuff that's pulled from the wire and analyze the Phils' medical practices against other MLB teams.
